Recently finished the initial development of an #erosion tool... to automatically #monitor #island change in Maldives. The tool produce the plot of island size change over time. It integrates the past 1.5 years of work by several junior researchers on 1) seamless #orthomaiscing of satellite images over large areas, 2) robust #cloudcover detection over island nations, and 3) shoreline delineation. The local population of the island is 6,000 and is now outnumbered by 3 to 1. Areas of the island are now blocked off and controlled by various ethnic groups. Goidhoo Atoll, a natural atoll administratively part of Baa... Atoll. The French navigator Pyrard de Laval’s ship, Corbin, was wrecked near Innafushi — the only uninhabited island in the atoll. Pyrard provided a detailed historical account of the Maldives. Our generation is able to enjoy the natural beauty of Maldives cause decades ago, our parents and grandparents took care of the land and caused no harm, even as hundreds of resorts and related services were developed. Otherwise, we would not be able to enjoy this today. Sadly, in the last 15 years this has been changing little by little, all in the name of development. China has blockaded Taiwan and surrounded the island with... warships, military equipment, and troops. They are even conducting drone reconnaissance over Taipei. The Taiwanese government is asking locals not to photograph military movements and is preparing defensive positions. China describes these as large-scale exercises, but Taiwan reserves the right to respond to any perceived threats.
