The PCB’s in today’s smartphones contain an ever-increasing density... of components and integration. The iPhone uses “Substrate-Like” PCB technology to achieve impressive levels of component density, everything is so closely packed, and no space is wasted. With this PCB technology, a "PCB sandwich" could be made by creating cavities in an FR4 PCB substrate and then stacking another PCB on top to form a lid, the “walls” formed by the cavities can be plated and then used as interconnects. This is similar to hollowing out the inside of a loaf of bread and then filling it with cheese & ingredients – or components in this case! While the US finally had a break from tornadoes,... it was CANADA that surprised many when it dropped a wedge tornado near Shoal Lake, Manitoba yesterday evening. In this radar loop, you can see where this tornado's origins came from starting with the outflow boundary (the line of weak reflectivity values the storm pops out from to the east of the radar site). Outflow boundaries concentrate extreme low-level rotation and force rapid upward motion, such that when supercells interact with these boundaries, the pre-existing spin can be stretched into tornadoes. These can happen super fast, and it remains something we don't fully understand. In the span of 30 minutes, we went from there being no discernible storm to there being a wedge on the ground, without a mesocyclone or a nudger. What is even more amazing is that despite Canada's radars being lower-resolution compared to what we have in the US, you can still quite clearly see the hook echo and the eventual debris ball that forms on reflectivity. Luckily, no injuries or fatalities have been confirmed from this tornado at this time.show more
