He previously made a claim about being “Black on the inside” and even equated the term “Fredo” with the N-word. His reckless banter showcases a disturbing ignorance of the weight that racial language carries in America. His attempt to diminish the significance of Black leadership by mocking Harris as though her rise to become the vice president and nomination for president are superficial phenomenoms, rather than the result of hard-earned success in a country built on systemic racial inequities, is unacceptable. His thoughtless comments perpetuate harmful stereotypes about Black leaders, dehumanize their achievements, and trivialize the faith and support the Black community places in its representatives. For Cuomo to reduce Kamala Harris’ historic role to a caricature demonstrates his continued lack of respect for the Black community and its struggles. 🧵Another personal thread dedicated to an Israeli reservist who... served during the first months of the genocide. This time it's Ariel Mualem, a D9 operator who served in Gaza. In mid-December his unit raided Kamal Adwan hospital and abducted the hospital director, Ahmad Kahlout. Kahlout was then tortured by the Shin Bet and forced to give a "confession", on camera, for supposedly being a Hamas militant and for using the hospital as a "military base" of Hamas. Mualem shared a video of the forced confession on his Instagram story, and wrote: "Take a good luck at this d*ck". In the following story we can see the hospital director being abducted, while cuffed. Mualem captioned the video "Human garbage🤮" and "Here he is, not such a hero after we got to him" A year later, Ahmad Kahlout is still held captive in one of Israel's concentration camps. We have been aghast, as have many across Canada,... with the racist and Islamophobic messages put forward by BC Post-Secondary Education Minister @selinarobinson. Her suggestion Palestine was a “crappy piece of land with nothing on it” is horrendous, especially in the midst of ongoing war crimes where thousands of children have been killed in Gaza. It evokes the language of terra nullius, where the people of Palestine are imagined to be non-existent. Her language is beyond offensive. Organizations across British Columbia are calling for her resignation, including organizations like the Canadian Association of University Teachers. It is hard for us to understand, given this comment amongst many others, how she can be expected to remain a Minister in Premier Eby’s cabinet. We note that Premier David Eby has sent a comment sending a clear signal that Minister Robinson’s comments were wrong and unacceptable. Islamophobia is wrong. Anti-Palestinian racism is wrong. Minister Robinson has been engaged in a pattern of behaviour that is wildly unacceptable. Full stop. We do note that we also find Minister Robinson’s “apology” to be woefully lacking, and contains no acknowledgment of Islamophobia or anti-Palestinian racism. I love this tragic, subtle parallel in the Godfather... Trilogy. Both Vito and Michael Corleone die of old age in a garden setting, retired dons relaxing in the sun with oranges nearby. The parallel is deliberate, but the contrast reveals everything. Vito collapses while playing with his grandson, a symbol of succession and rebirth from one generation to the next, surrounded by love and innocence despite his violent world. Michael dies alone. No children, no grandchildren, no partner, no family nearby. Only a couple of dogs moving around him. Despite having more blood on his hands than the local butcher, Vito exudes an approachable warmth and outwardly shows love for his family. This warmth is arguably what prevents Vito from dying alone. Michael, on the other hand, takes on a more steely persona after inheriting the family business, regularly putting business before family, even ordering the assassination of his own brother Fredo.
