The Haast’s eagle... is the largest and heaviest eagle to ever exist, weighing up to 37 pounds and measuring four feet long, with a nine to ten-foot wingspan. This enormous eagle had a bill larger than any living vulture and claws bigger than a tiger’s. Their main prey was moa, which could easily topple 12 feet high and weigh over 500 pounds! While the Haast’s eagle couldn’t necessarily fly off with a moa, they could use their sharp, powerful talons to rip through flesh and crush bone. There is evidence that the Haast’s eagle survived and evolved through multiple ice ages but went extinct around 500 to 600 years ago. Martial eagle (Slide 1) is stronger than bald eagle... (Slide 2). It is also a better hunter. It can take down larger, more challenging prey like antelopes or monitor lizards, unlike the bald eagle which relies more on fish and scavenging. The martial eagle’s predatory style is also more aggressive and versatile. Why is the bald eagle now used more by people? That is the power of marketing. The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States. It has been packaged in movies and clips to look more regal and powerful. I went on a walk down to the pond... and saw six of these great blue herons. Four of them flew away, so I turned around so I wouldn’t disturb them, But these birds have a 7 foot wingspan and sit about 4 feet tall. They are bigger than the bald and golden eagles that come here. I love seeing them here every year.show more

Nashville’s celebration of America’s 250th birthday broke records with... the largest Fireworks and Drone Show in the city’s history. 1,000 drones lit up the sky at a height of 600 feet, accompanied by a live performance of the Nashville Symphony. Music City’s fireworks display featured 12-inch shells for the first time—the largest ever launched in the city. They’re 3x larger in volume and weight than the 8-inch shells used in previous years, and weigh ~20 pounds each. The shells reach ~1,200 feet in the air before bursting into a display spanning ~1,000 feet across. 8 pyrotechnicians were staged in a steel bunker located in the middle of the show firing the shells in order to synchronize them to the Nashville Symphony performance. 40,000 pounds of explosives and 200 miles of wire were used in the show, per The Tennessee Tribune, with the show’s 2-minute finale ranking among the most powerful in the country.show more

San Francisco resident Joe Lo, who works near Fisherman’s... Wharf and often swings by Pier 39 after clocking out, first noticed a sea lion that seemed noticeably bigger than the rest on Saturday, March 14. “He woke up and swam off and spooked the rest of the sea lions,” Lo told SFGATE. “I’d never seen one that huge before,” he added. “I thought it was an elephant seal.” It turned out to be a Steller sea lion, a larger species that can reach up to 11 feet long and weigh as much as 2,500 pounds — about as heavy as a Toyota Prius. The midair ballet of the bald eagle is definitely... a courtship ritual, but this same behavior can also be the result of a territorial dispute. In my experience, a dominant female will always be the aggressor. The dynamics are interesting to watch. If she has not eaten, she will attack any others who get too close to her spot by grabbing them by the talons, swinging them around in circles, and tossing them below. It appears to be an act of humiliation with the dominant bird claiming victory over territory and food. If she has eaten, she doesn’t seem to mind sharing and will usually “allow” others to come into her territory and feed.show more

STATUES OF NEMRUT - KINGDOM OF COMMAGENE It is... a special area on the top of Mount Nemrut, in the shape of a pyramid, 50 meters high, with three terraces, with a tomb in the center of the Commagene King Antiochus I (probably built in 62 BC). There are 5 large statues 33 ft (10 meters) high on the west terrace: King Antiochus I, Zeus, Apollo/Mithra, goddess Tyche and Heracles; next to them are the eagle and the lion, which are the royal symbols associated with the Commagene dynasty. Due to earthquakes - various natural disasters, the heads of the statues fell and their heads were placed around the tumulus.show more

No stress eating and no excuses. This is a huge W. 300 pounds feels like a distant memory now, that will never be revisited. Frank’s athleticism, flexibility, and energy haven’t been this good since he was in high school. He has completely reformed his body composition, which isn’t always reflected by weight loss. He is building muscle and carrying significant excess skin. In fact, when a person his height loses 200+ pounds, the excess skin typically weighs between 15-25 pounds or in higher cases even 40 pounds. That means if Frank got surgery for his excess skin, he would weigh ~ 270 pounds. This combined with his A1C and overall physiological renaissance, Frank is adding 20+ years to his life. We’ve never had a weight target, the goal has always been to establish a healthier sustainable lifestyle. On that front, Frank has already won. It has now been 2 years of weigh ins and I couldn’t be more proud of Frank & the positive impact he is having on others. He fluctuated between 290-295 pounds all month. 80-90% of people who lose 20+ pounds, regain it within 1-5 years. Frank has lost 10X that and remains fully locked in on his walks 2+ years in. I remind him constantly, how impressive his follow through has been. He’s noticeably quicker and more dangerous when ranting with hammer fists, particularly on sidewalks. It’s actually becoming a liability. I have no doubt he is building muscle and also carrying 30-50 pounds of excess skin, which could drop him as low as 250 when removed. With that said, Frank can certainly improve on diet. That has been the juggernaut. He can’t be complacent, he’s gotta push harder. This is the General Sherman Tree, the largest living... tree on Earth by volume. It stands in Sequoia National Park and is estimated to be about 2,200 years old. It rises roughly 275 feet tall, with a base circumference of around 102 feet and more than 52,000 cubic feet of trunk volume. It is not the tallest tree in the world, but in total mass, nothing living surpasses it. Its bark is over two feet thick, built to withstand insects and fire. In fact, periodic fire helps giant sequoias regenerate. In person, the scale is difficult to grasp. Standing at its base, people look almost unreal beside it. North Richland Hills watched 2,500 drones turn the night into a massive tribute to America, with a rocket, a bald eagle, and George Washington shining over families who came out to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The one thing we absolutely know with certainty about... the Richat Structure is that there was an incredible amount of human activity here from the dawn of toolmaking and tool use itself. The Acheulean Hand Axe is the second tool that humans ever made and this technology spread throughout Africa, Europe and Asia while no definitive evidence exists that this technology ever made it to the Americas. I think this is evidence that this technology was shared and disseminated intentionally, that neighboring humans didn’t come up with this independently on their own but this was a legacy, an institution, a skill and an industry that was shared and taught. It is perhaps the earliest evidence we have of widespread cultural diffusion throughout Africa, Europe and Asia. And yes, it’s right there at the Richat Structure which leads me to question the role that the Richat played to humans half a million years ago. In 1963, the U.S. Navy wanted to find out... if a standard Marine Corps KC-130F Hercules, a massive 40-ton cargo plane, could land on a moving aircraft carrier to deliver heavy supplies over long distances. The ship was the USS Forrestal. And the pilot was Lieutenant James H. Flatley III, who had actually never flown a four-engine aircraft before getting this assignment. The Hercules had absolutely no tailhook, meaning it couldn't use the ship's arresting wires to stop. To land, the carrier had to steam at max speed directly into the wind, generating a massive 40-to-50-knot headwind down the deck. And the moment the tires touched down, Flatley had to slam all four engines into full reverse thrust bringing the giant plane to a complete halt in just 267 feet. Its massive 132-foot wingspan cleared the ship's control tower island by less than 15 feet. But taking off was an even crazier physics problem as the C-130 was way too big to hook up to the ship's steam catapults and therefore had to launch entirely under its own power. The crew thus had to back the aircraft up to the absolute rear edge of the flight deck. Flatley locked the brakes down completely and revved all four turboprop engines to 100% maximum power. When he released the brakes, 20,000 horsepower launched the plane forward. While Flatley focused on nose-wheel steering to keep the plane straight, his co-pilot held the control wheel to keep the massive wings level. Combined with the heavy headwind, the C-130 generated so much lift that it soared off the deck in only 745 feet. Over three days, they completed 29 touch-and-goes, 21 full-stop landings, and 21 unassisted takeoffs. Even though it worked, the Navy ultimately scrapped the idea as the C-130 was so huge it couldn't fit down the carrier's elevators, and the crew had to clear the entire deck just to land it; completely paralyzing the ship’s combat mission.show more

NEW: A Denver health inspector caught on camera pouring... Clorox bleach on a street vendor’s food. According to the owner, Isidro Garcia Barrette, about 100 pounds of food was thrown out. The city of Denver is defending the move, saying they had been issuing warnings and citations for weeks. “So the clip that went viral, unfortunately, was a very small snippet without any context of an unfortunate action that was occurring,” said Denver’s public health director Danica Lee. “We don’t have to use bleach, actually, very often, so this was a better than unusual situation.” “The vendor had been warned multiple times and was in the process of trying to pack food up and lock it up. In 1520, Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition was the first European... expedition to set foot in Patagonia and reported seeing giant people. The Europeans were described as reaching only up to their waists. Even the name Patagonia is related to giants in some interpretations: in one, Patagonia means “the land of the big foot,” and in another, Patagon was the name of a giant. Nevertheless, the name Patagonia is connected to the reported giant people. The descriptions come from Antonio Pigafetta, who sailed with Ferdinand Magellan and kept a detailed journal.
