Spent a long weekend with a group of folks... in the mountains of Switzerland. All top people in their fields: a senior position in investment banking, CFO of a bank, serial acquirers, PE investors, etc. Some of the obvious observations: 1. Everyone’s busy, grinding, working hard to get things done, to take care of their family. 2. Almost all guys work long hours, be it Friday, Saturday, or Sunday; most folks had their phones on, getting some work done at any given time. 3. Everyone’s normal people - it really comes down to having abnormal goals, desires, and the willingness to do what is necessary to accomplish all that. When you hear folks in their late 30s, 40s, and 50s building and operating roll-up companies that are doing hundreds of millions in EBITDA, in niches you do not even know exist, it’s pretty special. Shows you the importance of focus and mastering your craft. All the 72 hours we spent together was great proof that more events like this need to happen. Going from online to offline, getting out from the day-to-day. Having various short and long interactions with people in different industries... GPT-5.5 is MUCH more reliable on longer running tasks... - for the first time with any model. As we speak I have a migration running for over 7+ hours - this literally never happened before, the models would maybe run for 30 mins or of you really shout at them for 2-3 hours. Last night I went to sleep, set a long running task, then queued up 10 prompts to 'keep it going'. It did not stop after the first prompt and kept going for 8+ hours and I woke up to all the same prompts still queued up. The ability to run for a long time, in combination with ability to validate with computer use & other tools, makes it much more useful for building real applications.show more

As ferry pilots, we often fly 20-25 hours across... long distances and frequently need to service the engine oil enroute. Especially so with the more tired engines. Turbine oil comes in cans, and since we have to go through security to get to a job, we don’t have tools. Fortunately the on-board crash axe is the PERFECT tool for the job. If you put one finger over the top hole, and move swiftly and smoothly into position and then release your finger - you can pretty easily hit the filler tube with little to no spillage 👍🏼 Unfortunately it’s not possible to do while also filming, so you’ll see no evidence of my (ahem) “perfect pour”show more

Attempt to get to Canada, part 2. After more... than 13 hours stuck in Edinburgh airport and a plane that was clearly unfit to fly, we are waiting to take off for Montreal. Yesterday was like a comedy of errors. Why did Air Canada put us anywhere near that plane? In over 20 years of flying, I’ve rarely been more concerned about taking off in a plane. Worst of all, was the lack of info for passengers, many of whom had had the same flight cancelled the day before. No water offered in the plane for well over an hour -despite the searing temperatures. Numerous elderly folk were suffering in the heat. Several passengers were still waiting for their luggage past 9pm last night. Nobody had a clue what was going on. Many people had had no food since before 0900. Absolute shambles. Who is Jens Kjeldsen? Jens Erik Kjeldsen has spent... years sailing the world’s oceans, departing from Greenland in his own sailboat. Together with his wife, Dorthe Kjeldsen, He completed a circumnavigation of the globe, sailing from Greenland through the Northwest Passage and continuing via routes that included South America. During a voyage in Greenlandic waters back in 2018, Jens and Dorthe Kjeldsen became involved in a rescue operation later shown in a DR documentary. A woman was rescued from the icy waters of Disko Bay following a serious accident involving a small boat. She was the only survivor after several others lost their lives. The rescue took place after the woman had spent several hours in the water. Their voyages were carried out aboard their privately owned sailboat Kigdlua, which served as both home and means of transport during long periods at sea. Along the way, they crossed both the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. After completing their circumnavigation, the sailing continued. In 2022, Jens Kjeldsen sailed alone from Greenland toward Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean, a journey described in Greenlandic media as the fulfillment of a long-held personal dream. The journey was later completed when the couple sailed together again and returned to Greenland. I walked the picket line... again this weekend with hotel housekeepers striking against inhumane treatment, including anti-strike violence by Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Los Angeles. Fairmont housekeepers clean 14 to 15 large rooms a day. The hotel, which cut staff during COVID, is now enjoying pre-COVID occupancy rates and profits but nevertheless wants to increase daily workloads to 18 rooms to compensate for understaffing. 3 out of every 5 workers is injured on the job each year due to repetitive lifting of heavy mattresses + bending to scrub and clean. Workers typically commute 2 hours from Palmdale or Victorville because of the unaffordable housing in Santa Monica. Some live in their cars during the work week to save gas money. Many of the workers also work two jobs to keep up with inflation. As he laid off hundreds of hotel workers during the pandemic, Hilton’s CEO doubled his own salary from $10 million to $20 million annually.show more
