Previously, when they were shifted to jail for a ten-day remand, they were not allowed to meet their legal team, families, or colleagues, even though the court had ordered it. Today, the judges didn’t even ask about the previous progress of the case during that remand period. Once again, without reviewing any progression in the case, the judges granted another ten-day remand, which proves that the judges and the judicial system have completely failed to deliver justice. These institutions, which claim to represent justice, are actually demolishing the justice system. They were originally established to uphold justice, but they are now utterly failing. These judges have no integrity—whether it’s out of fear or because of rewards they may have received. The Pakistani judicial system has entirely collapsed, and in its place stands a rule of injustice. We have always made it clear that our struggle is for the implementation of justice. We demanded that missing persons be brought before the courts. Whatever the state is doing to the Baloch people should at least go through the legal system, there must be legality. But instead, the justice system itself is being weaponized against us as a tool of repression. This is not just injustice against us: it is a tragedy for the entire Pakistani judicial system. Today in Quetta, the ATC extended the remand of... Dr. Mahrang Baloch and other BYC leaders by another 15 days. That makes ninety days under the 3MPO, fifteen in illegal custody, and sixty-five in police remand—nearly six months of imprisonment without a shred of evidence. For 57 days we have protested in Islamabad with nothing but our voices and our resolve. Inside parliament, ministers claim BYC’s fate lies with the courts. Outside, we see how those courts truly function: judges removed for refusing to extend remand, suspended FIRs revived when televised lies collapse. The laws used against the Baloch were never written to protect us; they were designed to justify our persecution. And when a judge, after fifty years in law, chooses the colonel over the constitution, what remains is only disgrace. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of BYC leaders. Their imprisonment has never been about law or evidence. It is about silencing those who organize peacefully, who invoke the Constitution instead of the gun, who insist that the voices of Baloch families cannot be erased. At the 61st session of the United Nations Human... Rights Council, I spoke on the grave human rights situation in Balochistan. The ongoing pattern of enforced disappearances was raised, where individuals are taken without due process and families remain without answers. Cases of extrajudicial killings and body dumping were highlighted as serious violations that continue in the absence of accountability. The shrinking civic space was also addressed. Journalists, students, lawyers, and human rights defenders continue to face harassment, arbitrary detention, and legal action under counterterrorism laws. The continued detention of activists, Several BYC Leaders including Dr. Mahrang Baloch, reflects the broader effort to silence peaceful voices seeking justice. A call was made for an independent and impartial assessment by the United Nations into the human rights situation in Balochistan. In March 2025, they were arrested under 3 MPO. After three months, the government issued more than 40 FIRs against them, including various types of cases. We have faced these cases not only in courts but also in multiple districts, including Noshki, Dalbandin, Makuran, Naseerabad, Mastung, Kalat, and Khuzdar. These courts not only granted bail but also upheld the rule of law. In Quetta, we applied for bail in the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) before Judge Muhammad Ali Mubeen. He granted bail in many cases; however, in some cases, he later suspended the bail. Despite this setback, we did not lose hope and approached the Balochistan High Court seeking justice in those bailable cases where the ATC had suspended bail. For the past two months, Chief Justice Kamran Mullah Khel has reserved his judgment, but no decision has yet been announced. This situation clearly reflects that the justice system of Pakistan is under pressure from state institutions, commonly referred to as the Establishment. Meanwhile, in Hudda Jail, Dr. Mahrang Baloch and her colleagues have been facing jail trial proceedings for the past six months. During this period, the proceedings have not been conducted fairly or smoothly. Judge Muhammad Ali Mubeen who previously suspended bail in some cases has raised serious concerns about impartial justice. Our legal team, along with Dr. Mahrang Baloch, requested the transfer of the case to another judge. However, not only was this request denied, but the judge also threatened to add more charges against them. This is not merely a denial of justice; it is a direct threat to peaceful political activists who are the voice of their nation.show more

Unlawful Detention of BYC Leaders and Denial of Access... to Families and Legal Counsel Constitute Grave Human Rights Violations On June 8th, leaders of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) were unlawfully transferred from Hudda District Prison in Quetta to the Civil Lines Police Station on a 10-day remand. Since their transfer, they have not been seen, and authorities have denied access to both their families and legal counsel. This complete lack of transparency has raised serious concerns about their safety, including fears of potential torture in custody. In response, the families of the detained leaders gathered in front of the Civil Lines Police Station to demand their legal and moral right to visit their loved ones. The Superintendent of Police informed them that no meetings would be permitted without a court order. However, even after obtaining the necessary court directives, police have continued to deny access. Only the mothers of Dr. Mahrang Baloch and Beebow Baloch have been granted brief visits, while all other family members and legal representatives remain barred. In protest against these illegal and authoritarian actions, the families have initiated a peaceful sit-in outside the Civil Lines Police Station. We urgently call on national and international human rights organizations to intervene and hold the responsible authorities accountable. The state’s unconstitutional actions and continued targeting of human rights defenders must not go unchecked. Chief Justice, Honourable Elizabeth Gwaunza: -During the time that he was Judge of Appeal and a Deputy Chief Justice, he was also a Judge of the COMESA Court of Justice for more than a decade (2005-2016). -Mr Justice Malaba is an accomplished human rights defender who has taken advantage of his judicial posting by delivering judgments that protect the fundamental human rights of the vulnerable including women, children and persons with disabilities amongst others. -Since his appointment as the Chief Justice, he has led the judiciary and the Judicial Service Commission in taking deliberate steps meant to enhance access to justice for the people of Zimbabwe through the construction of courthouses in various parts of the country, simplifying court rules so that they are easily understood by ordinary persons and increasing the number of judicial officers both in the magistracy and superior courts. -Under his stewardship, the courts in Zimbabwe are moving towards digitisation through the Integrated Electronic Case Management System (I.E.C.M.S). The first phase of the I.E.C.M.S. was launched on 1 May 2022, at the Constitutional Court, Supreme Court and the Commercial Division of the High Court. -This July 2025, under his leadership, the Judicial Service Commission launched the I.E.C.M.S. in the magistrates courts. This phase marks the final stage of the digitisation of Zimbabwe's courts. -Mr Justice Malaba has participated in various training programmes both in the country and the region. He contributed significantly to collaboration in the continental judicial space through Zimbabwe's hosting of the 7th Congress of the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Africa (CJCA) and the African Electoral Justice Network (AEJN). -He is the current President of the CJCA, serving from 2024 to 2026. -Justice Malaba has also established the Judicial Training Institute of Zimbabwe (JTIZ) whose sole mandate is to develop human capital through training of judicial and non-judicial staff of the Judicial Service Commission.show more

On this International Human Rights Day, BYC Central Member... Sammi Deen Baloch states that Balochistan continues to face one of the gravest human rights crises of our time. Decades of systematic violence, fear, and repression have left deep psychological and socio-political wounds on the people of Balochistan. The suffering of the people of Balochistan remains largely ignored by the international community and by those organisations that call themselves champions of human rights. According to the BYC Human Rights Department, enforced disappearances have reached alarming levels, with 1,080 cases reported this year alone, including 53 minors. Disturbingly, Pakistani authorities are now targeting women and girls; 12 girls were forcibly disappeared in 2025, of whom three remain missing, and 189 extrajudicial killings were reported, including six women. Pakistani military operations, drone attacks, mortar shelling, artillery fire, and other assaults have become daily practices of the rogue paramilitary forces, resulting in the displacement of entire villages and small towns across the province. She highlights that human rights activists are the beacon of hope for oppressed people. Yet in Balochistan, human rights defenders are threatened, charged in fabricated cases, and hundreds of students and teachers face false accusations and FIRs for peaceful activism. Instead, they were quietly presented today without informing their families or lawyers. An additional five day remand was granted. At the same time, internet services were suspended to block information. This is a blatant violation of Pakistan’s Constitution: Article 10-A – Right to a fair trial Article 10 – Safeguards against arbitrary arrest and detention Shockingly, this hearing was held on September 6th (Defense Day), a national holiday in Pakistan, and when no lawyers were present in court.
