Tropical Storm Dolphin formed only 17 hours ago and already she is constructing a frantic inner core, with boiling, dry-ice bubbles of convection deep freezing the embryonic eyewall structure hidden beneath the cloud tops. This compact, fast-growing behavior seems to be priming Dolphin for explosively rapid intensification. I think we might need to invent a new term for Rapid Intensification for this Blizzard. Because it is about to BLOW the normal parameters OUT OF THE PARK. ✅Normal rapid intensification, or Bombogenesis, is defined as a Storm dropping 24 millibars in pressure in 24 hours. That alone is an incredibly high rate. ⏫This Storm is forecast to deepen nearly DOUBLE that rate, with pressure falling OVER 40 millibars in just 24 hours. That kind of strengthening is almost UNHEARD OF. 💨 At peak intensity, this Storm may even LOOK like a Hurricane on satellite, with a tight core and powerful wind field wrapping around it. ⚠️ This level of intensification is exactly why impacts could become so extreme. 👊 This Storm is the REAL DEAL, my brotheren. Get ready to witness history.

Hurricane Erin has been driven into a ferocious feeding frenzy by the heat energy of the SW Atlantic. Rarely do you see a storm outside of the West Pacific undergo such extreme RI as this. In 24 hours, her winds have more than DOUBLED, from 70 mph to 145 MPH, and her core pressure has plunged from 998 mbar to 935 MBAR. This is an exceptionally rapid rate of deepening for an open Atlantic Hurricane. Erin’s pressure continues to plummet by 6-8 mbar per hour based on Hurricane Hunter recon data, and she is now knocking on the door of Category 5 status.

The eye of Fung-wong (UwanPH) is really starting to melt through the icy shell of her CDO now. New, towering thunderstorms are rising up within the inner eyewall as well. On microwave imagery, the Typhoon’s cumbersome core structure is still yet to fully solidify. What we could see in the coming hours, especially after the Pacific sun evanesces below the horizon, is for this new burst of core thunderstorms to freeze the eyewall into a more complete and circular ring around the eye. That would likely jumpstart a true phase of rapid intensification right as Fung-wong enters her final approach to Luzon in the Philippines.

The Philippines can’t catch a break in the wake of Typhoon Kalmaegi (TinoPH), because just as that system heads deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, a new leviathan has emerged from the depths of the Pacific. On the right side of this satellite loop is Tropical Storm Fung-wong, a sprawling embryonic cyclone in the Philippine Sea. She may be weak and disorganized now, but the environment ahead is going to be favorable for rapid intensification. The island of Luzon is her most likely target for landfall. Watch this one closely.

A bridge in the parish of St. Catherine, Jamaica was swallowed by a swollen river on Tuesday as the eye of Hurricane Melissa closed in on the western coast of the country. According to See Jamaica, the channel that live streamed this footage, the bridge is a "vital link between Spanish Town and Linstead." Hurricane Melissa has since made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 storm. It is the most powerful hurricane to lash the island since record-keeping began 174 years ago and one of the strongest Atlantic storms ever recorded.
