Dehradun at a Crossroads: 6% of Uttarakhand's Area, 47% of Its Forest Diversion: While more than 46,000 hectares of forest have been diverted—an average of 5 hectares (50,000 Square Meters) every day— for some development activity like roads, mining and others during the past 25+ years in #Uttarakhand; the maximum diversion of "Forest Transfer for Development" has taken place in the district of #Dehradun. As many of you know, Uttarakhand has 13 districts and in terms of SQ KM, Dehradun is moderately sized occupying 6% of the state's total land area. Yet 47% of all "Forest Transfer for Devlopment" has taken place in the Dehradun district alone during that period. Ironically, this is the same Doon Valley that limestone mining ravaged in the 1980s and which became one of India's first Ecologically Sensitive Areas in 1989. Today, as its green cover faces unprecedented pressure, the valley once again stands at the crossroads between development and ecological destruction. A swift and highly skilled wildlife rescue in Manapparai Forest Range, Trichy, saw an Indian gaur safely brought out of an open agricultural well after nearly eight hours of coordinated effort by the Forest Department and Fire & Rescue Services. With conventional rescue methods ruled out, the team relied on precise veterinary intervention and a crane operation to bring the animal to safety, after which it was treated for minor injuries and released back into the Reserve Forest. Our Elephants are checking out the Mobile Wildlife Forensic cum Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at a Tamil Nadu Forest Department elephant camp. An initiative of the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Forest Department, this first-of-its-kind facility is providing advanced veterinary care directly into the field. Is Uttarakhand’s Kill Order for 13 Leopards & 3 Bears Politically Motivated? A secrecy report behind the order issued by the Chief Wildlife Warden of Uttarakhand directing the killing of 13 leopards and 3 bears, and the tranquilisation and capture of 16 tigers states that for a long time, neither the capture of tigers and leopards nor their deaths in conflict situations has led to any reduction in attacks on humans. What surprises me most about this order is this: when the secret report itself shows no decline in human-wildlife conflict, what sudden necessity has arisen to kill these animals in their own habitat? Is this decision politically motivated? Is it being carried out as a misadventure simply to please a certain vote bank and secure it for political gains? Issuing killing orders on such a mass scale is deeply disturbing for anyone who cares about wildlife. The biggest question that needs serious thought is this: How exactly will the specific aggressive animals be identified? What if a leopard that has never been involved in any such incident still ends up becoming a victim? That would be a serious matter of concern. It appears that swab samples are being stored after every human killing, and DNA matching will be done only after the animals are killed. This approach is completely wrong and unconstitutional. The Chief Wildlife Warden must revoke these orders and adopt a better, more scientific solution. Otherwise, this will amount to one-sided arbitrariness. I also appeal to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttarakhand to issue clear directions for the cancellation of this order. Every year large elephant herds migrate in Hosur from the adjoining Bannerghatta National Park and Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary often crossing into the forest agriculture interface of Jawlagiri and Denkanikottai leading to conflict. This is truly one of the toughest seasons for elephants,local people and the Forest staff. This region has seen some serious conflicts in the past. This year, our response is smarter and faster. Among many other interventions we are using a Thermal Drone customized for continuous monitoring which is proving to be a breakthrough. Real-time visuals are helping us detect herds early and guide nearly 50% of them back towards the interior forest areas before they approach habitations. It has also prevented accidental encounters, protected our ground teams, and more than doubled the efficiency of safe passage. On the ground, 20 anti-depredation teams work through the night, supported by phased installation of steel wire rope fencing along the 200 km forest boundary, which has already closed key crossing points in the Jawlagiri sector. Occasionally, elephants do enter open areas, and our teams ensure people keep away, avoiding risk and allowing safe passage.
