Yet Europeans were being warned that an operation of this kind represented an attempt to manipulate elections across the European Union. Then Bystron makes the much bigger allegation. President Zelenskyy: Moldova is defending itself again from Russia's interference. We have been helping Moldova, and Russia's trying to do to Moldova what Iran once did to Lebanon. And the global response, again, not enough. We have already lost Georgia in Europe. Human rights and the European nature of the state system are only shrinking there. Georgia is dependent on Russia. And for many, many years, Belarus has also been moving toward dependence on Russia. Europe cannot afford to lose Moldova, too.

We want to be in the European Union. And I am confident that if some representatives of the EU do not make mistakes, we will be there. We are already strengthening the EU, first and foremost from a security perspective. And today, security is a priority for everyone. A union that could be much stronger – I believe this would be a union of such countries as Norway, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and Türkiye. These are four countries that the European Union is lacking. Because Türkiye and Ukraine together outmatch Russia’s army: from control of the Black Sea to control of airspace. I know there are questions when it comes to Türkiye. I know that the United Kingdom has left the European Union. I know that Norway has many different forms of cooperation and economic ties with the EU, and so on. But I still believe that these four countries would make the EU the strongest union in the world, with the best security in the world. We are not seeking an alternative. I simply believe that these four countries are very strong and would make the European Union stronger. And even these four countries on their own would certainly form a very strong union. At Wednesday’s Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, Senator Mark Warner pressed Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard on the fact that her 2026 Annual Threat Assessment contains no mention of foreign election interference for the first time since 2017. Warner treated this as a scandal, evidence that the intelligence community has been muzzled by the Trump administration. Gabbard deflected, saying the assessment “matches the prioritization of threats.” Warner shot back, sarcastically, “I would draw the conclusion there must be no foreign threat to our elections in 2026.” It’s probably the right conclusion. The evidence for foreign interference in U.S. elections was always thin, the response to it was wildly disproportionate, and the infrastructure built to “counter” it did far more damage to American democracy than the interference itself ever did. As I testified before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government in March 2023, and again in November 2023, the “foreign interference” narrative became the predicate for a domestic censorship operation of extraordinary scope, one that Alex Gutentag and I have spent three years documenting at Public, and which we named the Censorship Industrial Complex. Removing the topic from the threat assessment is a long-overdue correction. Gabbard should have said so plainly and directly....
