Amjad Masad on AI as the next programming abstraction: “A hundred years ago people were coding in machine code. Not many people in the world can do machine code. And then Grace Hopper said, ‘I want to invent a compiler so that people can program in English.’” Replit ⠕... show more

“The next programming language is English.” Amjad Masad, CEO of Replit, and Matthew Berman on why AI coding is history repeating itself: “Computer science is pop culture. We don’t pay enough attention to our own history.” (as Alan Kay famously put it) “Before compilers, people didn’t even call it coding. Replit CEO Amjad Masad: "Code is almost fully automated." "We have an automated software engineer that is as good as a mid-level software engineer. It would get a job at Facebook or Google." "Even professional software engineers are not coding anymore." "If you're a product builder, all you have to care about is who the customer is." "What do you understand about the world that other people don't? And can you put that into an app?" Amjad Masad with

Replit CEO Amjad Masad on wealth in the AI age: "There are a lot of different ways to build wealth, but all of them revolve around ownership as opposed to getting salaries." "When I got my first job in the US working for Codecademy... I told them, you can just pay me enough to eat. Just give me as much equity as you can give me." "I was paid $70,000 in New York City. You know how painful that was? I was living in a studio with other people." "But who cares?" "Your job is to build equity." "The best way to build equity is to start a business. The second best way to build equity is to join a business that someone else started and get equity in it." Amjad Masad with

Replit CEO Amjad Masad and a16z's Erik Torenberg on the young talent formula: go really deep, stay authentically likable. Amjad: "If you're able to tell a story about some project you've done and you've gone really, really deep in it, that's always impressive because that's what most people lack." "Most people get bored easily. Most people do the traditional thing. But did you actually follow a thread all the way through?" "That shows all sorts of good personality traits: persistence, intrinsic motivation. You might be doing something where you're following your curiosity, and maybe it doesn't have an immediate reward." Erik: "I think it's both not being afraid to spike in something. A lot of people just show up too broad in everything, but not really amazing at anything. And just follow that to its conclusion. See how good you can get at it." "While also having a baseline of interpersonal skills. Be likable in a way that's not contrived or fake. Be truly authentic, because people want to support people who are good people." Amjad Masad Erik Torenberg

Replit CEO Amjad Masad on why the most ambitious employees are no longer blocked by engineering: "How can I upgrade my workforce for them to become generalist business people that can wield AI for the benefit of our customers and our bottom line?" "The most ambitious people are creating billions of dollars of value of their company." "There are people that are closest to the customer that feel that they have ideas that could make more revenue for the business, but they're often blocked by engineering." "Now a lot of them are bringing in Replit to work. They're building that idea, and they're making the money for their company. And then they're getting promoted, and then given more power." "I'm going to build a team of vibe coders that are going to go around the company and find all the inefficiencies and go solve them." "So we have a new role of this generalist automator." Replit CEO Amjad Masad: Being 'terminally online' may be an advantage. "If you want to work on a skill, it's going to be about idea generation." "Because the cost of implementation of those ideas is going down rapidly. It's gonna go to zero at some point." "So the bottleneck becomes, 'how fast can you generate ideas?'" "Just looking around you in the world and seeing what's happening. What are the trends? Are you plugged in on social media?" "A lot of the vices that older generations think are vices, might actually become advantages. So if you're a brainrotted, terminally online person, that might be an advantage because you know what's happening in the world." "If you're someone who's ADHD, really interested in novelty... that's actually an advantage because AI really benefits people who can try a lot of things really quickly." Amjad Masad with

Replit CEO Amjad Masad says AGI won't replace you—unless you’re a code monkey. AGI is a remote worker. If you have one, you'll spin up 100 more to execute your ideas. But the person who understands what people want—who can dream, design, and ship—that role stays irreplaceable.

I often write something publicly and then paste it on Slack." "Being yourself is kind of a big radical thing that maybe started happening with Elon maybe 10 years ago. "Zuck changed the entire narrative around him by just being himself and actually talking directly to people." Amjad Masad Erik Torenberg

HAA CEO Gagan Biyani and Replit CEO Amjad Masad on the simplest way to learn anything: build something you actually want with it. Gagan: "If you're going to learn coding at the academy, I don't want you just to take a class on Python. Go build something that you're super excited about in Python. Use it as a tool to learn the language." "The great thing about today, with AI, is every single student can go and do that on their own." "They don't need a customized syllabus or exercise given to them. They just need the freedom and confidence to say, 'Yes, you're allowed to do this. We're super excited about it.'" Amjad: "The buzzword for it is project-based learning. There shouldn't be a buzzword for it because that should be the standard." "The idea that you're learning something and you don't know the utility of it is a very modern invention, and it's a very weird thing to have done in society." "For someone like me, and I think for a lot of people that are more pragmatically minded, I'm not motivated at all by the pure pursuit of knowledge. I'm motivated by skills. What skills can it give me in order to achieve what I want to build and achieve my dreams?" Gagan Biyani 🏛 Amjad Masad

"We're trying to hire as many new grads as we can. We're finding that a lot of young people are agentmaxxing." - Replit founder Amjad Masad Amjad says that despite the “doom and gloom” around entry-level jobs, this is actually a “golden era” for young people who know how to use AI tools: "The roles are collapsing. We have designers shipping code, engineers shipping design, and salespeople shipping code." "The particular skill is not the bottleneck anymore. It is how ambitious you are, how generative you are, how creative you are, and how good you are at utilizing these tools." "So I think it's really a golden era for a lot of young people coming up right now in the job market. In our time, you would go and interview and become a Java J2EE software engineer doing global migrations. That was your title, right? It's no longer the case. We just want people to come and do things, and I think that's incredibly exciting."
