I attended the first National Economic Council meeting at Number 10 North today with Andy Burnham in the chair. There was real energy in the room about the PM’s reform and devolution agenda. Good that we had three of us from the South west there too.

It is being offered the same failed Labour poison in a different bottle: higher taxes, more welfare, more regulation and another assault on wealth creation. Britain does not need more socialism. 🚨 I agree with Tim Stanley that Andy Burnham could call a General Election before the end of the year. And this is the key point 👇 Why wait for events and circumstances to start going wrong? With Hormuz and escalating climate shocks threatening renewed inflation, higher food prices and greater food insecurity, there is a strong political logic to going early. An autumn election would also allow Burnham to ask the country to endorse his programme before the Treasury has to reveal the difficult arithmetic behind it. Burnham is rapidly laying out his stall: energy bills, buses, pubs, water and social care. Several of the benefits arrive next April. We still await the two potentially transformative pieces of the jigsaw: Brexit and PR. Gordon Brown famously had his moment and waited. I don’t think Burnham will make the same mistake.
