Association President Sasanka Sekhar Sahu said many vehicles on Indian roads, including several BS6 models, were not originally designed for a 20% ethanol blend. When I objected, the lady said: “Normal has max ethanol, so Speed is better.” First govt imposed E20 without choice, now pumps are pushing fuel we didn’t ask for. The automobile manufacturers, as well as the people who service these vehicles, all say there is no difficulty. Why this sudden interest? We have been using E15 (blend of 15% ethanol and 80% petrol) for the last three and a half years. We have been on E20 (blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol) since April of last year. From April 2025 to April 2026, it has already been one year, and we are now another five months beyond that. If someone is suggesting E25 (blend of 25% ethanol and 80% petrol), we have made it clear that we are conducting tests. Those tests will take time. Once the reports are available, we will evaluate them. Then we will discuss the findings with the stakeholders and the automobile manufacturers. After all, I neither manufacture the cars nor the fuel. The car manufacturers are comfortable with E20. Each one of them has made a statement to that effect. Consumers also appreciate the product. In 2013 and 2014, we were blending about one and a half percent ethanol in gasoline. And this programme was targeted to have 20% blending, which is E20, completed in December 25, five years ahead of the target. This programme, the ethanol blending programme, particularly in 2018, was in a structured manner, put out for discussion and deliberation by all stakeholders. It is supported by scientific evidence, extensive testing by the automotive, manufacturers and the agencies who support them, namely the Automotive Research Association of India, ARAI and SIAM, and also it is in line with the global best practices which is followed to green the fossil fuels to lower the carbon emissions," says expert Vartika Shukla at the press conference by industry experts on ethanol. I used to admire Nitin Gadkari’s work a lot, but his relentless push for ethanol over the past few months is getting out of hand. Back in 2003 and 2006, the roadmap was clear and calculated, a steady 5% ethanol blending across states when vehicles were properly E5 compliant. That's how policy implementation should look. Instead, we're seeing an aggressive all-India push for E20, and now he is actively pushing for E85 and E100. What’s even more baffling is his response when asked why India isn't adopting a true choice-based model like Brazil. He completely passed the buck, stating that providing fuel options is Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s job, while simultaneously boasting that flex-fuel vehicles will give consumers the ultimate choice between ₹70/L ethanol and ₹120/L petrol. Btw he promised ₹15/L ethanol blended petrol back in 2023. If the fundamental policy decisions and market readiness fall under a different ministry, why force a aggressive narrative onto the automotive sector before the infrastructure or consumer choice is genuinely ready?
