This play caused some scorekeeper confusion. The batter is up with two outs and two strikes. Runner on third base. The batter swings and misses, strike three but the ball gets by the catcher. Before the catcher can throw down to first base to try and get the batter out, he tags the runner out from third who is trying to steal home. Inning over. But, who leads off next inning for the team batting? The next batter in the lineup or does the current batter come back up because he was never recorded as an out or safe? The same batter came back up to bat next inning and the umpire and coach from the opposing team didn’t say anything. Did they get it right?

Since we are on the topic of rules, here’s one. This came up recently in the LLWS. I will be honest, I had no idea that was a rule so I figured this would help some of you coaches and players out! Someone tagged me on TikTok and when going through the comments, I saw Brittany McKinney (who was calling the game) state the rule as follows: After overrunning the base or returning to the base, the offensive player must return to the fair portion. Should they stand on the foul portion only, it is considered not in contact with the base and they will be called out if: a. they are tagged with the ball; or b. they stand on the foul portion of the base while the pitcher has possession of the ball within the pitcher’s circle.

This team was down by 7 runs in the last inning. They made a comeback and scored the winning run by this young man stealing home. 👏 This is why as a catcher, you never throw the ball back to the pitcher from your knees with runners on base. You always stand and take a look at the runner, ESPECIALLY with a runner on third and in this scenario, the game winning run. That’s poor coaching imho. It’s the little fundamentals that are coached in practice that add up to whether a team is prepared or not for the games. Where was the coach telling his catcher to keep an eye on the runner at third?

This men’s softball game has an interesting play. Runner on first less than two outs, batter hits a ground ball to first. The first baseman fields it but the runner from first never leaves the bag to run to second base. The first baseman tags the runner on first while he is still on first base and then tags the base with his foot. There is a right way to play this game and a wrong way and this is 100% in the wrong. I don’t care that the batter moved back out of the box- you don’t intentionally step back to throw at her head, as hard as you can, from about a foot away. I don’t want to hear “you don’t know it wasn’t intentional.” Save it. The runner at 3rd is about a half step off 3rd. The way the catcher is positioned to throw, that throw is going towards the 3rd base fence. The most telling part though? No one checks on that batter and catcher gets a high five right after from her coach. The batter ended up with a concussion. This is completely unacceptable and has no place in this sport.

This runner at second base tried to steal third base. The catcher throws the ball down to the third base girl, she applies the tag and the runner is called out. The coach wanted obstruction on the third base girl. The 3rd base umpire said no obstruction. They ask for the home plate umpire’s help but he sticks with the call from the 3rd base umpire. When you look at it, the runner had a clear path to the bag but ran high and slid into the third base girl when if she had gone in more of a straight line would have made the tag harder. She didn’t try to slide into the base but rather the fielder imho. I say no obstruction and the right call was made. You make the call.

This happened in a game between the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets that I’ve never seen before. Pete Crow-Armstrong was on first base. The pitch goes to home and Armstrong is off trying to steal second base. He slides into second and is called safe. New York challenges the call and it is overturned and he is called out. They said he came off the bag. Not strange right? However, it was ball four. Pete is entitled to second base. You can hear the announcers- “it doesn’t matter if he’s tagged. It’s ball four. In our league the play stops when the ball gets back to the pitcher. So getting it back in fast is everything! Our team was struggling with it so I came up with this game on the fly. One practice. Fixed. And the kids were BEGGING to play it again! Here's how it works: ⚾ Two teams. Defense takes their positions. ⚾ Hit through the full order with a tennis racket and tennis ball. ⚾ Every base touched before the ball gets back to the pitcher = 1 point. ⚾ For example: Pitcher secures the ball between second and third? 2 points. ⚾ Out at first before runner gets there or fly ball caught? Zero points. ⚾ Score and keep running if the ball still isn't back. The play never stops until the pitcher has it in the pitchers circle . Works on getting the ball back in fast, backing up throws, base running, communication, and teamwork. We saw a massive difference the very next game! PLEASE SHARE with someone this can help! ⚾💪🔥

This umpire gave this kid and his team two warnings for throwing the bat at the catcher. He told them if it happened again they were going to get ejected from the game. Well….it happened again. The batter hit the ball back to the pitcher and the pitcher overthrew first base. But, the umpire called a dead ball and called the batter out and ejected him from the game. The coach came out to argue and said the batter didn’t throw the bat, that it was a regular follow through on the back swing. He told the umpire they had it on film. The umpire said he had it on film too. Then the third base coach came down to argue and the umpire told the coach he was wrong and that he had it on video. You can hear the parents screaming at him. Some people said that was a terrible call and he let go legally on the follow through. You can also hear them tell the umpire that he had it out for that kid. 🤯 But a lot of people sided with the ump and said he handled it well and with that many warnings that it was a fantastic call. 💯 The umpire gave the same kid two prior warnings. Even if it wasn’t intentional, there has to be consequences after a third time. He could seriously injure the catcher. This will help the batter in the future hopefully. What do you think? Was this the right or wrong call?

🚨CONFIRMED NON-CHANGE🚨 I can now confirm that Cincinnati Reds JJ Bleday's appeal for a hit against Milwaukee Brewers was denied, and the original ruling of a missed catch error was upheld, meaning the four runs in the inning scored against Jacob Misiorowski will stay unearned. As a reminder, the play made by the third baseman was well above ordinary effort, but since he had a good, on-target throw to first, the only issue is whether the first baseman, Jake Bauers, dropped the ball/missed the catch. While it is extremely close, the ruling is that Bauers could have caught the ball a millisecond before Bleday hit the base (which you can see in the screen capture). Now, Bauers also played this poorly in that he is on the back side of the bag, and he is not stretched out properly to receive the ball, but that isn't really used in this. The question is: did he drop the ball or miss the catch in a way that, had he caught it, the batter would have been out, and the answer to that, for the committee, is yes, he would have been out. Since the ball hit the glove before the foot hit the base (as many pointed out), it's an error. One of the smartest baseball plays I've seen in a long time, and I'd like to share it with you. Bases Loaded with two outs in the 5th inning with izaacpacheco at the plate. Austin Murr is the runner at first base. Pacheco hits a ground ball to 2B. If Austin Murr goes in sliding, he's forced out to end the inning. If he runs through and continues on to third, he'll be safe at second and allow the West Michigan Whitecaps score a run before a rundown causes the inning to end. They wouldn't have gotten the run any other way. West Michigan went on to win the game 5-4 in 10 innings.

A lot of infielders are scared of the short hop. Great infielders create it! Here are some keys to playing the short hop: 1️⃣ Move your feet The closer your glove is to the ball, the less that can go wrong. Move your feet to catch the ball as close to the ground as possible 2️⃣ Play from the ground up Playing under the ball softens our hands and allows us to play through it 3️⃣ Practice away from the field To get really good at fielding (or anything) you need to put in hours and hours of practice. There is not enough team practice time to get in the reps you need to play at a high level. You must take what you learned at practice and work on it at your house. The garage, basement, driveway, or backyard. Reps build trust. 4️⃣ Someone is always working It’s a big world. If you aren’t consistently sharpening your game, someone else is.

On the next pitch, the catcher slid to the right out of the way of the ball making no attempt to catch it and let it drill the umpire right in the mask. Umpires are fallible human beings. Bad call? Maybe it was. But intentionally letting the ball hit him is poor sportsmanship, dangerous and has no place in the game. The coach, pitcher and catcher should all be ejected from the game. Heck, I might just call the game if I was the umpire and if that is what you are teaching your players, maybe that coach should never be allowed to coach again. What would you do if you were the umpire? How about if it was your child pitching or catching? And what are you saying to the coach if he was the coach of your team?
