Before GTA VI: Remember how much more alive GTA V’s trailers felt compared to the final game. With all the excitement surrounding GTA VI, I recently went back and watched a comparison between GTA V’s trailers and the finished game. Some of the differences were genuinely interesting. What stood... out most wasn’t the graphics, vegetation, lighting, or overall visual quality. In fact, in certain areas, the final game actually looked better than what was shown in the trailers. The biggest difference was the atmosphere. Many of the trailer shots made Los Santos feel incredibly alive, with NPCs behaving in ways that felt natural and believable. People seemed less like scripted game characters and more like real individuals simply going about their daily lives. That’s not a criticism of Rockstar at all. GTA V still went on to become one of the greatest and most successful games ever made. If anything, it’s a reminder that trailers are carefully directed and edited to create a specific mood, showcase the world at its best, and tell a compelling visual story. Lately, I’ve seen people dissecting every second of GTA VI footage—analyzing reflections, interiors, shadows, crowd density, and countless tiny environmental details from just a few brief clips. It really shows how enormous expectations have become. Personally, I’d rather keep my expectations grounded. If GTA VI ends up surpassing them, that will make the experience even more impressive. But if we spend years imagining a perfect version of the game, the final product will always have an impossible standard to live up to.show more

Hot take, but I’ve always felt Vice City is easily the worst GTA. I’ve never fully understood the hype around it. Don’t get me wrong the atmosphere is amazing, the 80s vibe is iconic, and the soundtrack is one of the best in the series. Tommy and Ken are great characters too. But once past that, the game itself doesn’t hold up as well for me. The map feels small and empty, especially compared to San Andreas, and even GTA 3 felt bigger in some ways. Driving around and exploring isn’t that fun, which is a huge part of what makes GTA games enjoyable. The missions are where it really loses me. Many feel repetitive or straight-up frustrating, especially early on. The RC helicopter mission inside the building is a perfect example more annoying than fun. It often feels like the game is just throwing obstacles at you instead of offering natural progression. To me, it’s always felt more like a quick follow-up to GTA 3 than a fully evolved entry, leaning heavily on style over substance. It has its moments, but compared to the other GTA games, it just doesn’t hit the same.

I'm always blown away by the fact that Rockstar Games casually made some of the best and most realistic water physics in 2008. GTA IV is the prime example of Rockstar Games focusing heavily on bringing realistic physics in a video-game. Everything from how a car handles, NPC ragdoll and water simulation in Grand Theft Auto IV was way ahead of its time and it even beats most of AAA games that we've seen these past few years when it comes to those game mechanics. Imagine how much ahead GTA 6 is going to be now that Rockstar Games has much more processing power to work with on current gen consoles

One of the Grand Theft Auto V downsides was that it didn't match GTA IV in terms of euphoria ragdoll physics, in this example here you can see how easily the NPCs die when you shoot them on the foot. Part of the reason why I believe the euphoria engine was downgraded was due to the scale of GTA V and that it was designed for PS3/Xbox 360 consoles. Fast Forward a generation later, Red Dead Redemption 2 is much better compared to this, but I still prefer the one in Grand Theft Auto IV. When GTA VI comes out, perhaps we will see a more improved version of euphoria ragdoll physics which will be a mix of both GTA IV style ragdolls and Red Dead Redemption 2.

This is the closest Game we have to compare to GTA VI in terms of Open-World Gameplay. This Matrix: Awakens footage was recorded on Xbox Series X and as you can see the FPS is struggling to stay above 30FPS. The resolution also takes a big hit when you start moving the camera too fast because of so much processing happening at the same time. Considering GTA 6 has probably 10X times the mechanics of NPCs behavior going on and physics that are miles ahead of this game, it's safe to say that a performance mode is going to be near impossible in a PS5/Xbox Series X and S Version. Perhaps when PS5 Pro launches we will get a 60FPS mode, but things are looking rough right now. This is the closest Game we have to compare to GTA VI in terms of Open-World Gameplay. This Matrix: Awakens footage was recorded on Xbox Series X and as you can see the FPS is struggling to stay above 30FPS. The resolution also takes a big hit when you start moving the camera too fast because of so much processing happening at the same time. Considering GTA 6 has probably 10X times the mechanics of NPCs behavior going on and physics that are miles ahead of this game, it's safe to say that a performance mode is going to be near impossible in a PS5/Xbox Series X and S Version. Perhaps when PS5 Pro launches we will get a 60FPS mode, but things are looking rough right now. I'm playing GTA V on a PS3 and its been such a fun experience. I remember when was a kid and playing this for the first time, I didn't give a damn about how BAD the framerate was during driving. I was constantly in awe by how realistic this game looked back then that the framerate wasn't something that was going to stop me from enjoying it. Don't get me wrong, this game is running on a PS3 that has 256mb of RAM and 256mb of VRAM which is some black magic itself and the fact that Rockstar Games managed to have such a massive open world game with that much traffic and NPCs running in real-time is a feat on its own.

Why don't we have this level of NPC density in recent AAA Games? Assassins Creed: Unity was by no means perfect, you can clearly see some NPCs popping into the frame while you're playing and some others not load properly, but it came out in 2014! It was designed on previous-gen consoles that ran on a Hard Drive and it was a game that was so rushed, Ubisoft never bothered to give it the love that it deserved. If there's one thing that still fascinates me about this game even today is the sheer number of NPCs that are rendered into this open world, it simply feels alive. By 2025, you'd think that most AAA game studios would have already gotten over these issues like NPCs popping into the frame and we would have Open World games that feel more alive than ever before. Nope, instead of huge number of NPCs, modern gaming companies are more focused on bringing Ray Tracing features which I have nothing against if it wasn't for having a such a small number of NPCs. I'm not an expert to determine what the exact reason behind having so few NPCs really is but I honestly would love if Ubisoft gave another shot at this kind of tech. Thankfully one of the games that looks like it will have this huge number of NPCs is Grand Theft Auto VI, by the screenshots and Trailers alone, it reminded me of how alive Unity really felt and I can't wait until that game comes out.
