This encampment comes shortly after a UN report found Canada's immigration system to be a "breeding ground" for "modern slavery," and just days after @GhadaaSharif and @KenyonWallace's Toronto Star investigation found that the @JustinTrudeau government is giving directives to ESDC officers to expedite LMIA processing, thereby giving employers the green light to exploit immigrant workers.

You were given student visas. To support you, you were given work permits. With your studies done, LEAVE. On what grounds should you be given the extension? I supported the students at airport rd and derry rd that were duped by the agents. Not these. This is nonsense. The demands: 👉 Extend Post-Graduate Work Permits expiring in 2024-25... why and on what grounds 👉 5-year PGWP for all international students... Why? 👉 Stop LMIA-based exploitation ... It's the employer's issue not the govt 👉 Fair pathway to PR... you had NO intentions to study, but your goal was PR. Where does PR come in student visa? Did anyone promise you a PR with a student visa? Pack your bags and leave.

You have no right to remain here longer than your visa allows. GO HOME.

So you come on a temporary visa to study and get another temporary visa to work, and now you’re mad the times up? You agreed to the terms of your visas.

My guess is a lot came to Canada with no intention of ever going back. No sympathy for them.

Liberal MP starts petition to allow foreign students and migrant workers facing deportation to remain in Canada Amandeep Sodhi is calling for foreign students and migrant workers facing deportation to be granted permanent residency and provided with federal aid. On Thursday's live stream, Tamara Ugolini and Alexa Lavoie discussed a new story from Blacklock's Reporter that shows Liberal MP Amandeep Sodhi of Brampton Centre has launched a petition to allow foreign students and migrant workers facing deportation to be granted permanent residency. “Canada must provide clear timelines and realistic pathways to permanence for those who have already demonstrated their commitment to this country,” reads Petition E-6940, sponsored by Sodhi. According to official estimates, there are currently over three million foreigners in Canada who are on either valid or expired temporary permits. The petition introduced by the Liberal MP not only calls for foreign students and migrant workers facing deportation to remain in Canada, but it also calls for taxpayer funding for "temporary residents facing status insecurity and distress". In addition to this, it calls on Parliament to “publicly recognize that international students and temporary workers are not to blame for the current system," as further noted by Blacklock's. “These individuals have studied, worked, paid taxes and supported Canada’s economy and social fabric including during the Covid-19 pandemic,” the petition continues, adding, “They deserve compassion, stability and a fair opportunity to build a secure future in the country they already call home.” Tamara criticized the petition, noting Canada should not be welcoming people as permanent residents who are attempting to find loopholes in immigration law. "It's not always the fault of the international students per se, but if you're due for deportation, and your visa's expiring, then guess what, you have to go," she said. "We can't expect people to come here and find some sort of loophole to stay and then expect that they will uphold our laws and regulations if they're coming here intent on breaking them from the onset," Tamara continued. "I'm not saying that everyone is guilty of that, but there are certainly people who are trying to capitalize on some of those loopholes, and I think that's just a recipe for disaster," she said. If the goals of the petition were successful, the Canadian population would increase by over three million people despite Mark Carney previously pledging to significantly reduce immigration after a massive spike under Justin Trudeau.

FEARS OF MASS DEPORTATIONS International students and foreign workers have erected tents in Brampton, Ontario, to protest recent changes to Canada's immigration policy. They say they will not abandon their protest until the government reverses its decision. "This is the situation they created. They miscalculated how many immigrants they want, how much housing they have, how many they can accommodate over here, and now they're blaming it all on us," said one protester. I asked him if he thinks there are too many international students in Canada. He pointed out that some employers charge workers $20,000 for LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) to help convert their study permit into a work permit. "These [practices] need to be controlled. The government has to control immigration, and that's not a problem. But whatever [many] you've taken right now, you have to accommodate those, right?" he explained. "You sold a dream of a better life: Come here, study, get a work permit, stay," he added. At the protest site, signs reading "no illegals on stolen land," "no more Komagata Maru," and "no mass deportations" are displayed next to their tents. Most of the protesters are from Punjab, so I asked if they've faced exploitation from employers within their own community, whether community politicians in positions of power in Canada are helping them, and what organizations are lending aid to them. More interviews to come Media Bezirgan.

Tim Hortons lobbied to replace Canadian workers — now it’s time to replace them Tim Hortons says they can’t find workers. Meanwhile, Canadian kids can’t find jobs, and instead of fixing that, Tim Hortons went to Ottawa asking for permission to replace them. In a May 27, 2024, lobbying letter to then immigration minister Marc Miller, Tim Hortons admits: “without international workers and international students... business would struggle immensely.” Then comes the ask: raise the Temporary Foreign Worker cap from 20% to 30%. That’s nearly one in three workers not being Canadian — but they didn’t stop there. The company also pushed for a dedicated food service immigration stream with a pathway to permanent residency, locking in a permanent replacement workforce. At the same time, they want international students working up to 30 hours a week — hours that used to belong to Canadian teenagers trying to get their first job. And here’s the most infuriating part: Tim Hortons openly admits these jobs matter. They say these jobs help “develop a wide range of skills and build promising careers” and serve as “a stepping stone to integrate into our country.” Exactly. That’s why those jobs used to go to Canadian kids. Instead, youth unemployment is climbing, with nearly one in five young Canadians struggling to find work. Entry-level jobs, the first rung on the ladder, are disappearing. Strip away the corporate language and it’s simple: lower wages, replace local workers, and lock in a dependent labour pool. No jobs for our kids? No money from us. It’s time for a boycott. REPORT by Sheila Gunn Reid:
