Mentorship is very important in elephant society. During the reintegration phase, we help our dependent orphans transition to their wild lives by offering a safe, supportive environment in which they can learn from and mingle freely with wild elephants, ex-orphans, and their families. This scene captures how naturally these dynamics unfold: The big bull, known as ‘Customer Number One’, is a wild elephant who often arrives early to join the orphans for breakfast. On this morning, he lined up beside ex-orphan Chyulu (far left) and her wild-born sons, Cheka and Charli, surrounded by our dependent herd. When they spotted him, forlorn and lonely, they knew immediately something was wrong. Hours later, and with the help of rangers, they established he was an orphan. And a rescue began. Today, Daba is experiencing the joy of family once again, as part of our human-elephant herd. His Keepers describe him as a gentle soul, and as he continues to recover from his ordeal of being alone for so long, glimmers of a more mischievous side are emerging! Mzinga went wandering down memory lane last night! Our nanny extraordinaire was so absorbed by escorting tiny Kipekee home that she bypassed her current stockade and made a beeline for her former baby stable — which is now occupied by young Olomunyak! A milk bottle held by Keeper Simon set her back on course to her rightful bedroom. Every elephant here is an orphan. They are in the first stage of their journey with us, the Nairobi Nursery. In time, they will graduate to a Reintegration Unit, where they will learn how to live as wild elephants. Starting at $50/£35 a year, can become part of their ongoing story through an adoption:

A woman glanced at my dog and said he looked “dangerous.” She even questioned why a German Shepherd like him should be allowed on a plane at all. Let me introduce you to Drake. The same dog she felt uneasy about spent six years working with Marine Special Operations. Drake is a highly trained Multi-Purpose Canine. My husband and I adopted a 10.5 year old dog. Not because we were looking for another dog, but because she sat at the shelter for 3 months without a single person inquiring about her or meeting her and we didn’t want her dying alone. She wasn’t with a rescue but people in the rescue community were networking her because she was the sweetest and was every shelter volunteer’s favorite dog. They would even let her hang out in the office with them. I heard about her and the next day we went to meet her and adopted her. She was covered in ticks when we brought her home, and it took a lot of vet visits, treatments, trial and error, and patience to finally heal her from it. There were moments where it felt overwhelming, but she was worth every bit of effort. We weren’t sure how long she would live but we didn’t care, because it wasn’t about us, it was about her. Thankfully she was with us for three years and passed just two months ago at 13.5 years old, which is ancient. She was an amazing dog and I loved her just as much as all my other dogs. Seniors are the best and they’re just as deserving of a loving home as any other dog. 📹treatsnatcher

They don’t get milk bottles, as they nurse from their mothers, but like to race alongside the ever-competitive Lima Lima all the same.) Lenny and Sulwe symbolise the multi-generational success of our Orphans’ Project. Their mothers, Lima Lima and Sonje, were rescued as babies. Lima Lima lost her mother to poachers; Sonje was shot in the leg, leaving her with a lifelong injury. And now, because their lives were saved all those years ago, they are bringing the next generation of elephants into the world! Your support makes these stories possible. In case you were wondering about the beautiful dog in the picture with Taylor Swift, here you go! Her name is Jellybean and she's a graduate of Canine Assistants, a school that raises and educates dogs for service or for facilities. I've had the pleasure of interviewing Jellybean’s mom, and she said that facility dogs work in hospitals, school settings, nursing homes, dentist offices, anywhere that needs them. The dogs’ handlers are often child life specialists working together with the dogs to help patients achieve medical goals. Sometimes the dogs help kids walk after surgery, help with medication compliance, or help with motivation to participate in therapy. Things in the hospital can be scary, especially for kids. The dogs help to soften the environment and make the work feel more like play while simultaneously providing comfort and motivation to complete tasks that otherwise could be very difficult. For example, walking after surgery can be scary and painful. Often kids don't want to do it. But somehow when the dogs are there, the kids are motivated in a different way. It's like the dogs have a skillset humans don't possess. Jellybean lives with her mom who is her primary handler and her mom is also a child life specialist. Jellybean has 2 additional handlers that are child life specialist as well. Each of Jellybeans' handlers are proud of the work she does everyday. They say she is truly the best medicine! The card tricks in the videos are just fun labeling tricks that keep Jellybeans' brain engaged while entertaining parents and staff in the process. Along with jellybean, in the photos are additional graduates of Canine Assistants - Hunter, Litta, Dusty, and Patsy!

A year and a day ago, I lost a very special friend. What started through Make-A-Wish became a friendship I’ll always treasure. Daily, I would get a video or text from her and her friends…She brought so much joy into my life, and I miss hearing from her. I have yet to break the habit of waiting for a video from her. They truly made me smile. When I learned she wasn’t doing well, I got on a plane to Minnesota to be with her. She passed while I was in the air. Her family showed me a kindness I’ll never forget by letting me say goodbye. They also gave me her favorite blanket and the journal she kept about our time together. I still haven’t been able to read it. One day, I will. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about her. She reminded everyone around her how much light one person can bring into their day and their lives, no matter how short their time here. Missing you always. ❤️

This is Cherry. Cherry is a young 4 year old Doberman with a playful side, a smart mind, and lots of love to give to the people she trusts. She has a medium energy level, making her a great balance of active and relaxed. She enjoys walks, playtime with toys, and settling in for some downtime. Cherry appears to be housetrained and walks nicely on leash, which makes getting out and about together easy. She's also quite the student and already knows several basic commands like sit and down, plus a few fun tricks such as paw and roll over. She enjoys toys and natural chews, which are great outlets for her energy and curiosity. With familiar people, Cherry is affectionate and enjoys being near her humans. She can be a bit wary of strangers at first and may bark if someone approaches too quickly. With slow introductions and a little patience, she warms up nicely, often after the first one or two interactions. Cherry is still figuring out how to socialize with other dogs. While in the shelter, she has met both male and female dogs. She may start off a bit stiff and seems to have limited experience with dog play. As she relaxes, she can become more social, though her play style can be a bit pushy, and she has overcorrected when another dog approached her in a way she didn't like. Becaus of this, a dog-to-dog meet and greet is strongly recommended to ensure the right match. Cherry would do well with someone who appreciates a smart, engaging dog and is willing to give her time to build confidence with new people and experiences. My husband and I decided to open our hearts to a 10-and-a-half-year-old dog. We weren't looking to adopt another dog, but when we learned that she had spent three months at the shelter without a single visitor or adoption inquiry, we couldn't bear the thought of her growing old and passing away alone. Although she wasn't with a rescue organization, her story was shared widely throughout the animal rescue community. She was incredibly gentle and sweet, and the shelter volunteers adored her. They loved her so much that they often let her spend time with them in the office instead of leaving her alone in her kennel. The day after we heard about her, we went to meet her. The moment we saw her, we knew we couldn't walk away. When we brought her home, she was covered in ticks. Helping her recover wasn't easy. We made countless trips to the veterinarian, patiently tried different treatments, and devoted a great deal of time to her care. There were moments when it felt overwhelming, but we never regretted our decision. All we wanted was for her to spend the rest of her life surrounded by love. In the end, we received the greatest gift of all. She stayed with us for three more wonderful years before peacefully passing away at 13 and a half years old, an impressive age for a dog. She brought so much joy into our family and will always hold a special place in our hearts. Queen Vee and the team are shamelessly removing blind people from Zimbabwe that are begging on our robots. Africans must learn to fix their own countries and fight their own governments to instill order in Africa and protect their wealth so that the old and disabled people can get grants as well in their countries. Our old and disabled people never ran to African countries to be a burden or to seek refuge during the apartheid era even when they were faced with death. They all remained behind and fought for freedom except for a few political figures that went to exile. We have no sympathy for cowards that run away from challenges. Sympathizing with Africans will never help us grow or build this continent. We want change in Africa, AFRICA must prosper. #WeWantOurCountryBack 🇿🇦

this is the moment successfully finished scheduling shifts for my parent's tea store for the first time. my mom is BLOWN AWAY. this is going to save her hours of every week going back and forth with the team and sorting out this annoying task. the way we set it up: - "CameliaOS", our moltbot, sends her a reminder every morning to ask for inputs from team - team members respond with times - my mom sends screenshots to Camelia - Camelia updates her on any missing inputs - Camelia drafts a plan, adds it to google calendar (color coded, which is the form factor that the team is used to) - my mom gives Camelia feedback - she ships it one interesting learning: as we were teaching Camelia this new skill, my mom sometimes asked me "how should i explain to it that X or Y" I told her - just discuss with her like you would with any human, just share your doubts and concerns.. Opus is so great at making sense from vague inputs and help crystalize a plan. we are making progress, many more workflows to teach CamealiaOS, and I am sure more will surface the deeper we go into it.

Peggy lived alone at the end of Hawthorn Lane, and the only one who really kept an eye on her was a big black Doberman named Bear. People in the neighborhood used to cross the street when they saw him. He looked like the kind of dog you read about in the wrong kind of story, all muscle and sharp ears. But anybody who actually knew Peggy knew that Bear followed her around the house like a shadow and slept on the floor beside her bed every night. Peggy was 79 and stubborn about living on her own. Her son had been after her for a year to move somewhere with people around, and she kept telling him she was fine, that she had Bear and that was plenty. One morning in the kitchen, she reached up for a mug on the top shelf and her legs just went out from under her. She came down hard on the tile and couldn't get herself back up. Her phone was on the counter, way out of reach, and the house was dead quiet except for her own breathing. Bear was at her side before she even finished falling. He nosed at her face and pressed against her, and when she told him to go, he ran to the front window and started barking, the deep kind the whole street could hear. He wouldn't stop, going from the window to Peggy and back again, over and over, until a neighbor two doors down finally came out to see what all the noise was about. She found Peggy on the floor and Bear standing guard over her, and she had the ambulance there within minutes. Peggy came home a week later with a cracked hip and a new respect for that dog. She still won't hear a word about moving. She says she already lives with somebody who looks out tor her.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Florida Task Force 1 (#FLTF1) is on the ground in Playa Grande, La Guaira, Venezuela, standing alongside a community forever changed by the devastating earthquakes. The mission is complex but clear. It's driven by the possibility that a life can still be saved. That thousands of families are waiting for answers about the fate of their loved ones. For many of our rescuers, this mission is deeply personal. As Spanish speakers, they are able to communicate directly with the people they encounter offering not only life-saving expertise, but also reassurance, comfort, and compassion in their own language. In moments of unimaginable loss and uncertainty, a familiar voice, a few words of encouragement, or simply being understood can provide a measure of hope that extends far beyond the rescue itself. Our canine search teams are among the most vital members of this mission. Guided by their handlers, these remarkable dogs use their extraordinary sense of smell to detect the scent of people trapped beneath the rubble, helping our rescue teams search quickly, safely, and with incredible precision. This is what our team has trained for. But no amount of training can prepare you for the emotion of walking into a community devastated by disaster. In the days ahead, they will continue this mission with compassion, and determination. Far from home and working shoulder to shoulder with the Department of State and international partners, our 80-member Type I Urban Search and Rescue team and six extraordinary canines will continue this mission hoping to find life under the rubble.
