Christopher Nolan recently came out with massive praise for The Rock’s performance in The Smashing Machine, referring to The Rock’s work as “incredible”. I totally agree. I gave this film four stars & I think The Rock reached a new level as an actor. I encourage you to see this.

The Rock’s career is at a crossroads- I really believe that. My difficulty with The Rock is that he makes questionable creative decisions. I think he can act. Do I think he’s Laurence Olivier? Be serious. But the scripts The Rock picks & the films he chooses to make haven’t made a lot of sense. I loved The Smashing Machine but now a live-action Moana followed by another Jumanji? The Rock’s filmography isn’t as strong as it should be at this stage of his career. I question if it will improve.

Ben Affleck gave a really strong performance in the George Clooney-directed film The Tender Bar. Affleck’s performance is heartfelt & mature. I thought this had an opening for a potential Oscar nomination, but it’s still some of Ben’s best work as an actor. An overall good film.

Insomnia is the only film Christopher Nolan & Al Pacino united on & I think it’s perhaps the most underrated movie of Nolan’s filmography. Yes- this is a slow burn, I get that. But it’s an intimate performance from Pacino with nuanced direction from Nolan. This film is good. 🎂

But I have to say, he dazzled me with with his ability. He’s an extraordinary actor, beyond what I even hoped for or imagined. James Gandolfini gave such a memorable performance in Killing Them Softly. I like this film more than most & Jim is the best part of this movie. In rewatching The Sopranos, it’s so apparent that Gandolfini could do anything as an actor. He’s raw as hell in this film & this scene.

Christopher Nolan is all over my timeline & all I can think about is how badly I want to see The Odyssey. I read a Tweet earlier comparing it to Lawrence of Arabia. And yes, I absolutely believe the hype. I can’t believe a new Nolan film is this close. I can’t believe we waited 3 full years and it’s almost here.

The Imitation Game feels like it came out a lifetime ago. This earned Benedict Cumberbatch an Oscar nomination for Best Actor & while I’m not as high on Cumberbatch like some people on this app, I think he’s without flaw in this film. I’m also partial to historical dramas- they interest me in particular. Good film - great performance.
