Christopher Nolan recently came out with massive praise for The Rock’s performance in The Smashing Machine, referring to The Rock’s work as “incredible”. I totally agree. I gave this film four stars & I think The Rock reached a new level as an actor. I encourage you to see this.

There are moments from The Rock’s performance in The Smashing Machine that I don’t think I’ll ever forget. I actually don’t care that this film didn’t receive Oscar recognition. The Rock showed me something here. He made me feel something. I hope this is a sign of things to come.

The Rock’s career is at a crossroads- I really believe that. My difficulty with The Rock is that he makes questionable creative decisions. I think he can act. Do I think he’s Laurence Olivier? Be serious. But the scripts The Rock picks & the films he chooses to make haven’t made a lot of sense. I loved The Smashing Machine but now a live-action Moana followed by another Jumanji? The Rock’s filmography isn’t as strong as it should be at this stage of his career. I question if it will improve.

Director Christopher Nolan only needed two words to convince Matt Damon to join “The Odyssey.” “I think I said, ‘Yes,’ before I knew what we were doing,” the actor tells 60 Minutes’ Scott Pelley. Damon stars as Odysseus in the epic releasing this summer.

Ben Affleck gave a really strong performance in the George Clooney-directed film The Tender Bar. Affleck’s performance is heartfelt & mature. I thought this had an opening for a potential Oscar nomination, but it’s still some of Ben’s best work as an actor. An overall good film.

Insomnia is the only film Christopher Nolan & Al Pacino united on & I think it’s perhaps the most underrated movie of Nolan’s filmography. Yes- this is a slow burn, I get that. But it’s an intimate performance from Pacino with nuanced direction from Nolan. This film is good. 🎂

On the 7th anniversary of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, I still think this is Leonardo DiCaprio’s best performance. He lost the Oscar to Joaquin Phoenix for Joker & it’s a decision that’s aged horribly by the Academy. DiCaprio’s comedic range in this film changed my expectations of Leo as an actor. He reached another level with this film, which also happens to be Tarantino’s best.

Josh Hartnett’s performance in Trap is an absolutely incredible piece of acting. Hartnett gives so much range throughout this film. He’s devious & cunning. He lulls everyone to sleep, only to karate chop you in the neck as the film goes on. He morphs into someone totally different in the back half of the movie. I think Hartnett is underrated. I hope he continues to be given at-bats as a lead actor. He can carry a film.

Obsession star Inde Navarrette reveals who she wants to work with “Top two directors for me right now. One, I can't wait to see The Odyssey, so Christopher Nolan and I will never shut up publicly about Ryan Coogler. Sinners is one of my favorite movies of all time” “So Ryan Coogler and Christopher Nolan” “On the route of The Odyssey, Matt Damon. I think as an actor, he's been in the industry for a long time in such an elegant way”

Christopher Nolan on working with Tom Holland for the first time in ‘THE ODYSSEY’: “Tom Holland is an actor whose work I’ve admired for years, and I felt very confident, you know, he could take on this this coming-of-age story. But I have to say, he dazzled me with with his ability. He’s an extraordinary actor, beyond what I even hoped for or imagined. That’s such a thrill as a director when you you have somebody doing something even more than you saw in the character. He’s really a remarkable young actor.”

Louis Gossett Jr.’s 90th birthday is today. He was an incredibly respected & accomplished actor who happened to win the Oscar for Best Supporting role for his work in An Officer and a Gentleman. I think this performance rises to the level of “iconic”, as did much of his career 🎂

Michael Douglas won the Oscar for Best Actor for his iconic performance as Gordon Gekko in Oliver Stone’s 1987 film Wall Street, a commentary on the unhinged financial system taking over America. Douglas is so unbelievable in this movie & I always return to this because of his performance. I don’t think Douglas gets the credit he deserves for his raw talent as an actor. He also has an upcoming memoir that I intend to read & review on this here app.

James Gandolfini gave such a memorable performance in Killing Them Softly. I like this film more than most & Jim is the best part of this movie. In rewatching The Sopranos, it’s so apparent that Gandolfini could do anything as an actor. He’s raw as hell in this film & this scene.

As a kid, I wasn't sure why I loved BATMAN RETURNS so much. It was the Batman film I kept on revisiting. As I got older, I came to the specific realization it is because I'm a total weirdo. This film just resonates with me on a deep level. Here's to all the weirdos out there.

Christopher Nolan Explains Why He Doesn’t Use CGI and Shoots on IMAX Robert Downey Jr.: Why Christopher Nolan doesn’t use CGI. Christopher Nolan: I find CGI, however versatile it is, but it always tends to feel a little safe to me. Christopher Nolan: I think if you want something to have a bit of bite, you’ve got the imagery to a better threat, even if it’s a miniature, even if it’s something very fake, but something real on camera. Christopher Nolan: I think it gives you a better result. Robert Downey Jr.: Why does Christopher Nolan shoot on film? Christopher Nolan: I shoot on film because it’s the highest quality imaging format ever devised, particularly IMAX film, large-format film. Christopher Nolan: Film shows you the world kind of the way your eye sees it. Robert Downey Jr.: Where does Christopher Nolan get his ideas? Christopher Nolan: All over the place. Different on every film. Christopher Nolan: Oppenheimer, I’d been interested in a long time, didn’t know that much about the specifics of his story, then came to the book American Prometheus, and that absolutely got me hooked. Christopher Nolan: So, in the case of Oppenheimer, the idea… I trace it right back to, like, as a kid in the eighties, and we all thought we were gonna die in nuclear Armageddon. Robert Downey Jr.: Absolutely. Me too.

“I genuinely cried when Christopher Nolan wanted to meet me." Samantha Morton starring as the sorceress Circe in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey reveals what it was really like to land a role in the epic film Samantha Morton; I've had times when I haven't worked for a year since making The Odyssey, and at 49, the industry's politics have changed massively, but for me, getting to work with Christopher Nolan in my lifetime is everything, I'm happy now, when I got the call that he wanted to meet me, I genuinely cried. Being part of The Odyssey is incredible because we live in the age of the ego, and this film is the exact opposite of that, it's a deeply human spiritual experience Josh Horowitz: Well, it's funny because you talk about like, I mean, your body of work is amazing

Foxcatcher was the first time I started to take Channing Tatum seriously as an actor. I’ve always liked Tatum, but in the last decade, I think he’s really carved out a cool niche for himself. His new film Roofman releases this week & he’s getting a lot of Oscar buzz. I’m hyped.

I gave Resident Evil four stars & I really enjoyed myself watching this film. For starters, I very much appreciated this film’s 90ish minute runtime. It felt like the perfect length. I also think Zach Cregger, in his own specific way, is a true visionary. There’s also Austin Abrams. His dedication to his craft as an actor & Cinema at large is unquestionable. I have such high hopes for this man’s future & I loved him in this movie. Resident Evil is worth your time.

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is out in just over a month on September 25th & I can’t wait to see this movie. I can’t wait to see Mahershala Ali go to work with director Bassam Tariq. I think it’s a match made in heaven & could potentially bring Ali back to the same caliber of work that helped him win multiple Oscars. People sleep on Ali sometimes, but he’s as good of an actor as there is in the industry. I root for this film’s success.
