DB Burst to Stack Drill - The drill focuses on the "burst to stack" technique, which is considered a critical skill for defensive backs. - Players must focus on using a burst of speed to get on top of the receiver's route. - Coaches should instruct players not to settle for being even with the receiver; they must strive to get on top. - The primary goal is to avoid falling underneath the route. - Ending up on the receiver's hip is an acceptable outcome and is much better than being underneath. - Defensive backs must specifically apply the burst to stack technique when a receiver takes an inside release. DB High Shoulder Drill - Coaches should instruct defensive backs to eyeball the receiver's near hip to determine the route's direction. - When a receiver's hip moves toward the defender, it indicates the route is rolling over or through, requiring the defender to close the space and attack the hip. - If the receiver's hip moves away from the defender, it signals a vertical route that the defender must chase to reach the catch point. - Defenders should maintain proper footwork and spacing, utilizing techniques such as the kickstep and punch during the play. - Defensive backs must fight force with force by placing their hands on the receiver if the receiver's hands are on them. - Players should be violent at the reception point to effectively knock the football away from the receiver. DB Tennis Ball Release Drill - This drill is suitable as a first activity of the day or can be utilized as a filler drill. - Defensive backs must maintain a natural arms-length distance from the receiver to protect their space. - Proper spacing is critical because allowing a receiver to get too close provides them the opportunity to push or use a flipper move. - The drill requires a combination of great footwork and precise eye placement. - Players should focus on a quick and violent punch of the tennis ball rather than trying to catch it. - The punch should be shot from the shoulders to simulate the correct contact point on a receiver. WR Secondary Release Drill - Release drills should be treated as everyday drills that are performed at least twice a week with wide receivers and defensive backs. - Coaches should set up drills in the boundary area to simulate a lack of space, using a cone placed approximately six yards downfield. - The primary objective of any release is to be both fast and physical when getting off the line of scrimmage. - Wide receivers must wait to make their move until they have closed the cushion and are right on the defensive back's toes. - Executing a move too early allows the defender time and ground to recover, even if they initially lean or rock in the wrong direction. - After the release, receivers must focus on getting their chest out of the way, using physical hand techniques to stack the defender and return to their line as quickly as possible. D-Line Press to Scoop Drill - The press to scoop drill is designed for defensive linemen to handle situations where they encounter a double team combo or a zone block. - When positioned on the backside of a play, the player must work to press the scoop as flat as possible against the line of scrimmage. - It is critical to get hands on the offensive player to prevent them from getting a free release to the second level of the defense. - Players are coached to keep their inside arm long, strong, and fully locked out while adjusting their position during the play. - To maintain power and leverage, the defensive lineman should work to get their inside leg up, utilizing a same hand and same foot technique. - If two blockers remain on the defensive lineman, another defender is free; once one blocker leaves, the lineman must be prepared to come off the block and make the play. WR Rocker Step Drill - The rocker step is an everyday drill used by wide receivers to manipulate a defensive back's body positioning and movement. - This technique is designed to make a defender lean or stop their feet by simulating a break while the receiver is actually running at full speed. - Coaches should emphasize body control and movement manipulation, comparing the technique to a crossover move used by a basketball player. - Effective execution requires the receiver to move their shoulders and maintain total control over their body while selling a vertical route. - The drill begins with receivers coming off the line of scrimmage, running vertically for five yards while staying under control. - After mastering the initial vertical movement, the drill graduates to include the actual break in a specific direction to simulate game-speed routes of ten or more yards. DB Box Tackling Drill - The drill is set up using a five-yard spacing box with a popup dummy positioned in the center. - Defensive backs begin the drill in a pedal and must maintain an inside-out relationship to the ball carrier to properly win their leverage. - When a ball carrier cuts back, the defender should aim for a chest-to-chest tackle with eyes positioned below the ball carrier's eyes. - Effective tackling requires maintaining three bends in the body and creating knock-back through overexaggerated leg drive upon contact. - To eliminate cutback lanes, the defender must track the near hip and stay behind the ball carrier rather than getting even or in front of them. - Coaches should emphasize a drive-for-five mentality after contact and encourage defenders to rip at the ball to simulate a takeaway. LB Run Fits Drill The video outlines a linebacker drill designed to help players adjust their run fits based on the movement of defensive linemen. Key learning points include: - Dynamic Gap Fitting: Linebackers must be prepared to "make it right" rather than just fitting a pre-assigned gap if the defensive front is compromised. - Drill Setup: The drill utilizes a defensive lineman (represented by a coach with a bag) and a running back to simulate real-game scenarios. - Reacting to Defensive Line Movement: The linebacker must observe where the defensive lineman's head goes, such as a 3-technique getting knocked into an A-gap or a 2-eye getting reached or pushed into a B-gap. - Responding to Ball Carrier Cuts: Linebackers must mirror the running back’s cut and then "thud" him up to finish the tackle. - Redirecting and Filling: Players must practice redirecting their momentum; for example, if a linebacker expects to fill the B-gap but finds it occupied by a teammate, they must quickly jump cut or redirect to fill the new open gap. - Downhill Aggression: The goal of the drill is to train linebackers to see the opening and get downhill quickly to fill the vacant gap. LB Scrape Spill Tackle Drill - The scrape spill drill integrates movement skills, block destruction, and tackling into a single exercise. - Linebackers should maintain a downhill path with square shoulders while staying tight to the double team pole. - Proper hand placement for the spill technique requires one hand on the blocker's sternum and the other on the outside of the shoulder pad. - Players must plant their outside foot in the ground to quickly redirect and get back vertical toward the ball carrier. - Coaches should emphasize keeping the eyes up during contact to ensure players see what they are hitting rather than ducking their heads. - The ultimate goal of the drill is to avoid going one-for-one by being violent enough to shed the pulling blocker and make the tackle. D-Line Drive Sled Drill - The drive sled drill is designed to develop muscle memory in defensive linemen so they understand the necessity of continuing to drive their feet upon making contact with an opponent. - Players must demonstrate explosive movement by coming out of their hips and shooting their hands directly from the ground to the man to initiate contact. - It is critical for the player to maintain a wide base throughout the duration of the drill while driving the sled. - Coaches should ensure that a player's feet never get too close together during the drive, as keeping them spread allows the athlete to maintain power. - Maintaining full arm extension while driving is a key technical component for defensive linemen to master during this exercise. - The drill concludes, and the player releases from the sled only when the coach blows the whistle. LB Pass Rush Drill - Coaches should teach pass rush techniques to linebackers using the same methods applied to defensive linemen. - The drill focuses on linebackers facing a blocker, such as an offensive lineman or a running back, who initiates contact by shooting their hands. - A key component of the technique is a violent pin of the blocker's elbow combined with a rip move. - As soon as the linebacker's hips clear the blocker, they must point their foot back toward the quarterback. - Players should aim to have their entire body tilted and pointed toward the quarterback after executing the move. - The final phase of the drill requires the linebacker to sprint off the block toward their target. LB Long Stride-Short Side Drill - The drill builds upon a box angle tackle progression but incorporates a long stride and short stride aspect to it. - Coaches should deepen the depth between the linebacker and the ball carrier for this specific drill. - Players usually utilize crossover footwork to run and close the distance to the ball carrier. - Players must use a long stride to close space, and then transition to a short stride to throttle their feet, widen their base, and get under control. - A critical coaching point is to keep the inside foot up rather than back, which prevents the ball carrier from cutting back and breaking the cup. - Coaches can incorporate a drop progression element into the drill, acting as the quarterback to get the linebacker set up before they come out of their break. LB Track the Hip Drill - The "track the hip" drill is designed to create a sense of urgency for linebackers to reach the ball carrier. - Coaches should emphasize closing ground quickly to minimize the ball carrier's gain. - Players must maintain a downhill angle rather than a flat angle to ensure they meet the runner as soon as possible. - The goal is for the defender to make the tackle before the ball carrier reaches a specific designated line, such as the midsection of the drill area. - Linebackers need to remain aggressive and attack the ball carrier while maintaining proper leverage. - Using a "near foot, near foot" technique is essential for the tackler to successfully maintain leverage during the play. Punt Return Slingshot Drill - The slingshot drill is designed to help a punt returner get back into phase after a defender has beaten them or released in an unexpected direction. - For the drill to be effective, the player acting as the punt team defender must power through for at least four yards despite being slowed down by the returner. - To initiate the technique, the returner should place one hand firmly on the defender's hip as they move past. - The returner then reaches around with their second hand to grab the defender's hip, using the defender's own forward momentum to pull themselves back into position. - The ultimate goal of the slingshot is for the returner to regain side control and establish a position that is an arm's length away from the defender. - While grabbing a defender's shoulder pads is likely to be penalized, using the slingshot technique at the hip is rarely called by officials and effectively slows the defender down.
