Demis Hassabis says AI is taking coding and maths first not because they are easy, but because you can check the answer: Asked at Davos whether he still expected a 50% chance of human-level AI by the end of the decade, he said his timeline had not moved: "Yeah,...

code and maths have cheap feedback loops. nature doesn’t. once AI can generate hypotheses faster than we can experimentally test them, labs, robotics, measurement and the physical world become the constraint. AI can make thinking cheap. reality still has latenc

The verifiability point is huge—when outputs can be checked, adoption can move faster. The harder question is how teams redesign work around that leverage without losing judgment.

@demishassabis in clinical medicine you simply have to ask/verify the patient to check the answer. a nurse under ai guidance could do it as well as a doctor. on the republican principle of "do harm now save more later" ai should arrive in clinical practice immediately. no excuse

Worth adding: even in verifiable domains this isn't a done deal.

I agree with Demis. At least 10 years. But it is always moving. Next year it will 10 years. Etc. There is still much to discover. I wonder if university should consider pushing students into new areas. There are many.

This is the actual bottleneck for everything AI touches next, not compute, not data. Reality doesn't grade your homework the way a compiler does. Coding and math are the easy 20%. The other 80% still has to wait in line behind a lab bench.

Makes sense. In my SaaS work, anything with clean pass/fail gets automated fast. Anything needing human feel still eats my weekends.

Demis Hassabis just said something that should unsettle every scientist alive. Hassabis: “I do think that, ultimately, underlying physics is information theory. So I do think we’re in a computational universe.” The CEO of Google DeepMind is telling you reality runs on code. Not metaphorically. Structurally. AlphaFold didn’t approximate protein structures. It solved them. Not because DeepMind built a better guesser. Because proteins were never physical objects. They were always data. Hassabis: “The fact that these systems are able to model real structures in nature is quite interesting and telling.” He said telling. Not impressive. Not promising. Telling. As in the results reveal something about what reality actually is. AlphaGo found patterns in a 3,000-year-old game no civilization ever noticed. AlphaFold decoded biology in hours that took researchers decades. These systems aren’t approximating nature. They’re reading it fluently. Because nature was always written in a language machines understand better than we do. Hassabis: “Maybe at some point I’ll write up a scientific paper about what I think that really means in terms of what’s actually going on here in reality.” The man running the most advanced AI lab on Earth thinks he’s found something fundamental about existence itself. And he’s not ready to say it yet. Every era thinks it knows what the universe is made of. Atoms. Waves. Strings. Hassabis is suggesting the answer was never matter. It was always math. And the machine he built to fold proteins might have accidentally proved it. The question that should keep you up tonight isn’t whether AI can simulate reality. It’s whether reality was the simulation first.

HUGE NEWS: CEOs of 3 of the 4 leading AI companies all said they would pause/slow down if others agreed Anthropic CEO: If we don't sell chips to China, it slows them down. And then? "I'm very confident that [Demis and I] can work something out." EMILY CHANG: Some folks have advocated for a pause to give regulation time to catch up, to give society time to adjust to some of these changes. In a perfect world, if you knew that every other company would pause, if every country would pause, would you advocate for that? DEMIS HASSABIS: I think so. [DAVOS INTERVIEW] DEMIS HASSABIS: And if we can, maybe it would be good to have a bit of slow, a slightly slower pace than we're currently predicting, even my timelines, so that we can get this right societally. But that would require some coordination that is hard. DARIO AMODEI: I prefer your [longer] timelines DEMIS HASSABIS: Yes. Absolutely. DARIO AMODEI: I'll concede, yes... I said before, I prefer Demis' timeline. I wish we had 5 to 10 years. It's possible he's just right and I'm just wrong. But assume I'm right and it can be done in one to two years. Why can't we slow down to Demis' timeline? INTERVIEWER: You could just slow down. DARIO AMODEI: We can't do that because we have geopolitical adversaries building the same technology at a similar pace. It's very hard to have an enforceable agreement where they slow down and we slow down. So if we can just not sell the chips [to China], then this isn't a question of competition between the US and China. This is a question of competition between me and Demis, which I'm very confident that we can work out.
