Elon Musk on how technology changes civilization: "I think technology is the thing that causes these big step changes in civilization." He compares the internet to the Gutenberg press. Before the printing press, books were extremely rare. Even if you had a thirst for knowledge, there simply weren't enough... books to access. But the internet changed everything. Musk described the internet as humanity developing a "nervous system." Before the internet, information mostly traveled from one person to another. Access was limited.
