Gunship 2000 was originally developed and released by MicroProse for PC (MS-DOS) in 1991. It's a classic helicopter combat simulation, with later ports available for Amiga, PlayStation and PC-98. Highly regarded in the DOS and Amiga gaming communities, it's the official sequel to the original Gunship (1986).

Blackthorne (1994) for the SNES is a "cinematic platformer". Developed by Blizzard (then known as Silicon & Synapse), and published by Interplay, it's a "Prince of Persia with guns". The SNES version had some of its gore effects censored in comparison to the PC/DOS release. Re-released for the Switch, PS4, Windows, and Xbox One as part of the Blizzard Arcade Collection (2021).

Mr. Gimmick (Sunsoft/1992, known as Gimmick! in Japan) was released for the NES in 1993 only in Scandinavia. Using advanced techniques and made with a large staff, it's renowned for its quality and it's truly a gem. Gimmick! Special Edition was released in 2023 for modern consoles and PC.

Indianapolis 500: The Simulation for the Commodore Amiga (Papyrus/Electronic Arts/1990) is a groundbreaking racing game and one of the best motorsport simulators of the 16-bit era. 1st on MS-DOS PC (1989), it's essentially the same game (although on A500 you'd turn off details, A1200 shown here enables it maxed). Game's downside is that it features only one oval track. Formula One Grand Prix a year later featuring the tracks from 1991 season, surpassed it, content-wise.

X-Copy Professional was originally programmed by Frank Neuhaus and Hans Georg Berg for Cachet Software in 1991. It's likely the most used software ever for the Amiga. The iconic "takk-takk-takk-GRRR-boingggg!" sound at the 0:15 mark lives rent free in my head forever.

Obviously, flight and air combat sims from the 80s and even into the 90s weren't nearly as visually detailed and stunning as modern ones. But when Falcon was released it was the best air combat sim at its time. It was developed by Sphere and published by Spectrum HoloByte for Macintosh and MS-DOS, with later ports to Atari ST, Amiga, and other platforms. You take control of the F-16 Falcon jet fighter in realistic (at the time!) missions involving air-to-air combat against MiGs and ground attacks. The game features an incredibly detailed cockpit view with instrumentation, multiple HUD modes, radar systems, and authentic flight physics. It had variable difficulty levels and even a black-box recorder for reviewing flights. However, Falcon's biggest strength was walking the fine line between hardcore simulation depth with high playability even for the more casual gamers. I never considered myself a flight sim expert but could still get the F-16 off the ground :) I know, the polygon graphics look dated now but there was a time when this was state of the art. Top Gun (the movie) hit the cinemas in 1986, Falcon was released shortly after... excellent timing.

Any fans of this masterpiece? One of the few games I managed to finish (in 2 player mode with my brother) without using unlimited lives: Silkworm It's a classic horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up developed and published by Tecmo for arcades in 1988. You control either a heli (player 1) or a jeep (player 2) as they blast through enemy territory. And "blast" in the very sense of the word - great sound effects, epic explosions, and non-stop action. The helicopter offers free movement in the air, while the jeep drives on the ground, can jump over obstacles like mines, and has a turret that rotates to shoot in a 180 degree angle. Originally an arcade game, it was later ported to home computers like the Amiga (as in the video) and consoles. To me still one of the best games ever for the Amiga, and still playing it these days when my brother comes for a visit.

It was perfect for co-op gaming with mates. Programmed by Andreas Tadic and Peter Tuleby, with graphics by Rico Holmes and iconic music by Allister Brimble. 1. Top-down run-and-gun sci-fi shooter heavily inspired by Aliens: You (and a friend in co-op) explore an infested space station, blasting xenomorph-like aliens (I originally thought they were aliens) while managing limited ammo and health. It mixes fast arcade action with tense resource management. 2. Team17’s breakthrough hit: This was only their second game, after Full Contact, and their first full-price release. It put the UK developer and publisher on the map, before they became famous for the Worms series. 3. Extremely well-received on Amiga: Launched to critical acclaim, with many magazines scoring it 85–91% (CVG 91%, Zero 91%, CU Amiga 90%, Amiga Action 87%). Think open-world games started with GTA? Think again — this 1991 Amiga gem had a living Sherwood Forest with 40+ NPCs running their own lives BEFORE most of us had heard of sandbox adventures! The Adventures of Robin Hood was released in September 1991 by Millennium Interactive for the Commodore Amiga, developed initially by Steve Grand with Amiga porting by Alan McCarthy. Funny enough this game was originally conceived as a Wild West game, it then changed to Robin Hood! Robin Hood was built on the custom "Gulliver" engine, which was later reused in Rome: Pathway to Power. The atmospheric music was composed by Richard Joseph. Do you remember Sherwood Forest, was alive in this game? The forest was filled with over 40 NPCs (Non-Player Character) like Maid Marian, Little John, Friar Tuck, those merry men and others. All were driven by advanced Ai at the time with over 600 behavioral rules, living independent lives and more. True pioneer of emergent gameplay on the Amiga. Who else spent hours robbing the rich, feeding the poor, and watching seasons change in this underrated classic?
