Hermes OS is running on Linux I’ve been working on the desktop, app launcher, and separate spaces for Personal, Work, and Ideas. It’s coming together, and I’m honestly thrilled with how well it’s running. Files, memory, missions, and automations, with Hermes right there in the workspace. The idea is... simple: I want to tell my computer what I need and have Hermes help me get it done, while still having my apps and desktop available. Got it. Long asnwer: Hermes OS doesn't bundle a model; it runs on Hermes Agent, which is provider-agnostic (Nous Portal, OpenAI/Codex, Anthropic, Copilot, OpenRouter, local, etc.). On my machine the default is z-ai/glm-5.2 through Nous Portal. You switch models per session with /model or in Settings → Hermes & agents → Preferred model. The system tools (find files, kill a port, install software) are ordinary tool calls, so any tool-capable model works.

Fedora. The Linux version boots a stock Fedora Cloud Base image (currently Fedora 44) and cloud-init provisions it into Hermes OS on first boot. Kernel, systemd, NetworkManager, dnf and Flatpak are Fedora's; Hermes OS owns the session. The compositor is niri (in Fedora's repos), with the Hermes OS shell running as panels on top of it. There is also a macOS build that runs as a fullscreen environment over macOS, sharing the same UI and agent.

It isn't a new distribution in the "own kernel and packages" sense, on purpose. Hermes OS is an agent-native desktop environment where Hermes Agent is the primary interface to the computer: it owns the session (login goes straight into it, no GNOME/KDE), every window is a tile it manages, Super+Space asks Hermes about whatever is focused, and installing software, setting reminders, changing themes, taking screenshots, running OCR, locking or updating all go through one command surface (hermes-os CLI, a control menu, and the agent's own tools, all the same commands). Under it is unmodified Fedora + niri, so it inherits their security updates and hardware support. Think Omarchy's "opinionated, everything coherent" approach, but with the agent in the middle instead of a terminal

An AI-native desktop OS with one agent brain shared across apps and scoped workspaces is the right shape. Chat tabs are fine until the work lives in files, terminals, and whatever app is already open. That is the lane I am stuck in too - a Windows-first desktop agent that can edit a project with Keep/Revert, run real shell jobs, and (when needed) drive the UI instead of asking you to copy paste. Early build, still rough, but the shared-brain / local-tools idea is why I started:
