How are insecure attachments repaired? This week I’ve been exploring the concept of attachment (a deep emotional bond created between parents and their children during the earliest months and years of life). In doing so I’ve focused primarily on the goal of secure attachment. But not all attachments begin... securely. Which begs a pair of questions: What causes insecure attachments and how can they be strengthened? While anxious and disorganized attachment types can certainly result from erratic parenting, the toxic stress created by unsafe environments, and/or abuse and neglect, it’s important to keep in mind that early relational challenges occur on a broad spectrum of severity and sometimes aren’t the result of any parental shortcoming at all. In fact, some root causes may not even be within parental control. Children born extremely prematurely, for example, may spend weeks or months in a neonatal intensive care unit. While essential to their survival, the situation can limit early interaction with even the most attentive and well equipped parents. What else might impact attachment quality? The list is likely a long one. Severe postpartum depression, a prolonged military deployment… anything that might present a barrier to strong relational health between a parent and child. In complex (traumatic) cases of disorganized attachment, families may require a combination of specialized infant mental health services, therapy, and other professional supports. But in many cases the solution is as simple as a heaping dose of what was missing in the first place: predictably warm and responsive interactions. Children are remarkably resilient - and while it may take time to create updated patterns of interaction and establish them as the “new normal,” insecure attachments can often become secure with focused effort. This week I’ve been talking about attachment, which holds long lasting consequences for your child’s mental and physical health (not to mention their cognitive development). Secure attachments in infancy occur when parents’ interactions with their babies are: Warm. Responsive. Safe. And consistently so. I’ve shared lots of important tips in the past. Tips on reading to your child. Tips on play. Tips on language development. But I want to be clear that attachment has nothing to do with the number of toys or books in your home. Or how well you interact most of the time. Attachment is a product of your predictability. It’s how you interact EVERY time. It’s what you teach your child to expect from you as their caregiver. Inconsistency in the way adults interact with children - warm and responsive one day and potentially cold and distracted the next - is detrimental to secure attachment. When children don’t know what to expect from day to day, it creates anxiety. And this activates the body’s stress response systems. Continually. This is one reason that it’s so important for parents to thoughtfully manage their own stress, exhaustion, safety, and mental health needs. When you aren’t at your best for yourself, you likely won’t be at your best for your baby. As an aside, consistency is also why I’ve spoken out about viral social media trends that undermine trust and predictability by inserting chaotic behaviors into the parent-child relationship. Several months ago - if you can believe it - it was unexpectedly cracking open an egg on your child’s forehead. This week it seems to be throwing slices of American cheese at/onto your baby’s head/face. (I wish I was making this up.) While it’s easy for us as to dismiss such behaviors as jokes, to young children they are detrimental for precisely the reason some adults may find them funny: they’re unexpected. But when your otherwise kind and attentive parent randomly acts with callousness - if even for a moment - it breaks a stable pattern. It provides a new data point that suggests you may be warm and caring… but also may not be dependably. And this is precisely what undermines attachment. (The good news is that an otherwise stable attachment is unlikely to be permanently disrupted by one dumb mistake. We all make them. Still… don’t. Just don’t.) Be kind, be responsive, and do it predictably. I’ll never share the kind of videos I described above. Nobody’s perfect. This week I’ve been exploring attachment, a deep emotional bond between infants and their parents. In prior posts we’ve discussed four different attachment styles, with an emphasis on the most desirable and healthy of them all: secure attachment. Yesterday I emphasized that attachment styles result not from how you interact with your child SOME of the time, but how you interact ALL of the time - by which I mean that the totality of your interactions and the consistent and predictable patterns you establish with your child are what determines these outcomes. For this reason, your default mode should be warm and responsive. But today I want to insert a small, but important, caveat. Or at least a little more nuance. Nobody’s perfect. Nobody. As a well-intentioned parent it’s easy to hold yourself to an impossibly high standard. And that’s a recipe for fueling your own anxiety and ill health. The truth is that you can’t be instantly responsive 24/7 to your child’s every possible need. This isn’t an excuse to slack off. But it is a reminder to be kind to yourself. Parents are human. And we all have our lesser moments. We can be moody, stressed, exhausted... Sometimes we’re upset. Or distracted. And sometimes you need to take a shower. Or answer a knock on the door. Life happens. And the last thing I want you to take away from this conversation is a sense that any missed opportunity - or even the occasional boneheaded mistake - will cause your child irreparable harm. Instead think of attachment kind of like a jury might in a civil trial: what does the preponderance of the evidence suggest? Are you ALMOST always meeting your mark? If so, take this post as a little peace of mind. Secure attachment doesn’t require a perfect report card. If it did, secure attachments likely wouldn’t exist. The late pediatrician Donald Winnicot is credited with the concept of “good enough parenting” - which I’ve always found to be a really useful frame. This same concept holds true for lots of other advice that I’ve offered, by the way. Do you want to plop your baby in front of a screen all day? Absolutely not. Is it realistic to think they’ll never be exposed to one? Also probably not. Parenting isn’t an all or nothing proposition. So aim high… but give yourself a little grace. (If you read regularly you’ll know this child is actually in active sleep - which sometimes includes eye opening… and most likely smiling reflexively…but it’s cute and its other message fits today’s post. How long should my baby use a pacifier? I get this question a lot and it’s a tough one - both because there isn’t a single correct answer and because (like feeding and sleep) the topic brings out lots of strong opinions. But if you ask me, the family in this video has the right idea. Infants are born with a strong sucking reflex and pacifiers can help them to soothe and sleep. There’s even some evidence to suggest that sleeping with pacifiers might reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). In short: for babies (up to a year), I’m a big fan. But it’s not uncommon to see children with pacifiers well into toddlerhood, and in some cases, even beyond. And here I’d raise some important cautions. Children who rely heavily on pacifiers may be more prone to middle ear infections. And dentists note that prolonged pacifier use can affect your child’s teeth and create bite issues. Perhaps most importantly is their potential to impact expressive language development. Your child’s ability to speak is an important one. After a point, language shapes not only the content of our thinking, but the very structure of our cognition. By otherwise occupying the mouth over long periods of time, pacifiers may slow language development by limiting opportunities for expression. Speaking with a pacifier in the mouth can also lead to distortion of speech sounds (even when they aren’t in the mouth). All told, I’m an advocate for beginning to wean off of pacifiers at around a year of age - which is why this video spoke to me. We see an infant appropriately using one and big sister demonstrating her expressive language, her mouth unencumbered and free to chatter away happily. The transition can be difficult - but not nearly as challenging as for a child who has become dependent over a period of years. Do/did you use pacifiers with your child? Why or why not? If ever there was a “look of love” this has got to be it. 😍 I mean… book? What book? This little one ONLY has eyes for his mama. Eye contact is an important early developmental milestone and plays a number of roles for your baby. First and foremost, eye contact is critical to attachment and bonding. The stronger your emotional connection, the greater your baby’s sense of security - which contributes to optimal brain development. (Note, btw, that his little one appears to be in the hospital, making this emotionally secure - and almost enraptured - interaction all the more impressive, given what might otherwise be a stressful environment.) But there’s more than just safe and secure bonding happening here. There’s also serious learning. As your baby studies your face, they’re making connections between expressions and feelings - and, importantly, learning to speak. This little one may not be quite ready to replicate mom’s vocalizations quite yet, but he’s watching intently to see how his mother’s mouth moves and contorts to make all the wonderful sounds he’s taking in. With that gaze, he’s learning how to become just like mom. This beautiful video was shared to IG by mother_withchild.

As their hearing becomes fully functional during the final weeks of gestation, babies are exposed to a wide variety of sounds - ranging from Mom’s heartbeat and digestive rumblings to her muffled voice and those of family members and others in close contact. Indeed, researchers have found that newborn infants can already distinguish the rhythms and patterns of their mothers’ native languages at birth - and soothe to the sounds of lullabies (and even TV theme songs) to which they were regularly exposed in utero. Infant sleep can be such a tricky thing. Just as soon as you get reaccustomed to resting through the night, all of a sudden your baby reverts to waking multiple times a night. Welcome to the 8 month sleep regression. Interruptions in sleep patterns often coincide with the development of new skills and somewhere around 8 months you’re due for the biggest of them all. That’s because your baby is becoming mobile - and putting all the skills together to roll, crawl, and even pull to a stand in their crib. For infants this is a HUGE breakthrough. Imagine having spent your entire life mostly stationary, with your ability to pursue your own interests - or even adjust your view - subject to the whims of a caregiver. Somewhere between 6-9 months most babies begin discovering a host of new abilities. And let’s face it, some of them are a lot more entertaining than sleep. The good news (at 3am) is that the novelty here is temporary…but there are some important ways you can help your baby to navigate this period safely. Perhaps the most important one is illustrated in this video. And that’s adjusting the height of your child’s crib mattress to its lowest level. With newborns and immobile infants, it’s often convenient to elevate their mattress so they can be placed into and retrieved from the crib more easily. But when your baby begins pulling to a stand it’s critical that you lower their mattress to prevent accidental falls. Babies are top heavy and can easily go tumbling out without such adjustments. You may also find that your baby masters pulling to a stand faster than they master sitting back down - which can create a crib dilemma and a need for assistance. You can navigate through this phase more quickly by providing lots of wakeful practice in both standing and sitting, which may involve gently guiding your little one to bend their legs at the knee - or even placing an appealing toy on the ground near their feet to incentivize sitting back down. As for the sleep regression, it’ll be over before you know it. And while it can be frustrating in the middle of the night, think of it as a breakthrough. Is your baby cutting a new tooth? The truth is, it can sometimes be difficult to get a good look. Babies aren’t legendarily cooperative when it comes to exploration of their mouths. But here’s an old trick that might help you get to the bottom of the situation. All you need is a clean glass - and voila! A window on your child’s gums! Teething usually begins with the two bottom incisors - located front and center - typically somewhere between 4 and 7 months of age. But, as with all things child development, teeth can arrive earlier or later in individual cases. Some babies are even born with natal teeth (though this isn’t always an ideal situation, both for the initiation of breast feeding and because these natal teeth often have weak root structures and, if dislodged, pose an aspiration danger… in which case a pediatric dentist may elect to remove them as a precautionary measure). While we’re on the topic of teething, know that the Food and Drug Administration warns against the use of over the counter numbing gels in young children. These products, which often contain a local anesthetics like Benzocaine or Lidocaine, can lead to a rare but serious (sometimes fatal) condition condition called methemoglobinemia, in which the oxygen-carrying capacity of red blood cells is greatly diminished. Instead, massage your baby’s gums with a clean finger or use a firm rubber (solid) teething toy. It’s tough to be a baby. As newborns, infants are dependent on adults in so many ways. They aren’t mobile, are limited in their ability to express their needs, and (in the earliest stages, at least) lack the motor skills to even direct their gaze. But toddlerhood changes all of that. Equipped with more sophisticated language, motor, and cognitive skills, a whole new world opens up to them. And with this comes a powerful desire for agency. Agency relates to the ability to make choices and act on one’s own desires… to take charge. Parents can avoid a whole host of conflicts by leaning into this desire for decision making authority. That doesn’t mean anything goes, of course. But where you can find opportunity to allow your child to make his/her own decisions, it’s well worth the effort. And this dad has the process down pat - allowing our hero (who just celebrated her first birthday) to select a book from a limited number of choices. Does it take a little longer? Sure. Before, I saw Sana and Jihyo looking tired and even massaging their legs. But today, it is heartbreaking and painfully obvious that Sana is not okay at all. This is so painful to watch, and it has seriously gone too far seeing them in such poor condition. I don’t care if people disagree with my tweet. I cannot stay silent anymore. Watching the members suffer one by one like this is breaking my heart, and JYP’s handling of their health is deeply disappointing. I am especially disappointed in JYP. In my opinion, JYP made a huge mistake when Dahyun was sick. They did not even take her to the doctor for an X-ray. Dahyun had to endure the pain for almost a month and still perform. Even in Incheon, she had to walk to the parking lot while limping, without any ankle support or a wheelchair. Before that, Jeongyeon and Chaeyoung were sick and had to miss the tour. We even had to watch Jihyo perform while she was sick, sitting on a chair on stage. That was painful to see. Then Mina had to be absent today because of health issues, and now we can clearly see that Sana is also not in good condition. Watching this happen again and again is exhausting and heartbreaking. How many times do we have to see the members suffer before their health is truly taken seriously? I know concerts and schedules are decided together by the members and the agency. But why does it feel like the girls’ health is always the last thing being considered? Can’t the agency do better and put their health first, just once? The girls are the kind of idols who truly love meeting fans. They will keep showing up even when they are unwell, as long as they can still stand. That is exactly what scares me the most. This might be the greatest counting video ever. I don’t want to spoil it, so watch it first, then come on back and let’s discuss… ____ There are so many fantastic things happening here as our hero (age: 2 years, 7 months) counts his plastic eggs. In this video we get a sense that he is well on his way to mastering two important early math skills: rote counting and one-to-one correspondence. Rote counting is the process of remembering and reciting numbers in their correct order. It’s a memorized skill - but an important one that helps children to understand that numbers exist in a fixed sequence. One to one correspondence is the process of matching each spoken number to one (and only one) physical object. This little guy pulls it off perfectly, counting with accuracy to 11. His inclusion of 8:30 between 8 and 9 was not only the best laugh I’ve had all week, but a telling stroke of genius as well. Where did it come from? World Models are the path for some AI Models in the future. But how can we efficiently train these models to not only see the world the way humans do but to see the world in a new and unique way. By visualizing, what is normally sequenced audio patterns, we can derive much more insights. Here we see Paganini in a visual form that can than be described and transcribed into a World Model. We can observe connections in a manner that may not have been clear prior to the digitalization of music and sound in this way. The company with the most valuable potential in building a World Model is Tesla. Not that this type of visualization is being used, but that the mechanisms are in place, and the technology is in place for the company to thrive in this new form of AI.

Below is my full speech, as we gathered at World Health Organization (WHO) to honour our colleagues, who lost their lives, with a minute of silence: Dear colleagues, Today, we gather with heavy hearts to remember and honor our dear UN colleagues who tragically lost their lives in #Gaza. Their unwavering commitment, sacrifice, and bravery will forever be etched in our memories. These dedicated individuals embodied the spirit of the United Nations, standing on the frontlines of conflict zones to provide much-needed humanitarian assistance and support. They put their lives on the line to bring hope and relief to those affected by violence and despair. Their memory and the impact they made will forever remain. Their unwavering dedication to peace, justice, and the well-being of others serves as a guiding light and a reminder of the importance of our shared mission. Now here’s something you don’t see every day: natal teeth. 🦷 As a general rule of thumb, babies begin teething between 3-7 months of age. But did you know that some babies are actually born with one or more teeth? Natal teeth occur in roughly one in every 6,000-8,000 births. They can be problematic in some cases - and not just for the obvious feeding challenges they can pose for breastfeeding mothers. Natal teeth are often underdeveloped and have weak roots. As a result they can be loose and a risk for swallowing or aspiration (inhalation). If this is the case, your dentist may choose to remove them. But this isn’t always the recommended course of action.
