This is an infielder racing into the outfield, and this is almost a terrific catch. If you can see the infielder’s full number as she is running into the outfield, that means it’s above ordinary effort. There have been quite a few shaky calls in this #WCWS (as per the usual sadly) but this isn’t an error. Even the announcer went with calling it an error, but this is 100% a hit.

This is from today's #WCWS game. This was ruled a base hit when it happened (you can see the 'H' pop up), but was changed to a missed catch error by the first baseman at the bottom of the fourth. This is an impossible catch for the first baseman with a ball thrown from that angle, that hard. This throw has to be to the glove, and while it's not a wild throw, it's low enough that the first baseman cannot get her glove around it in time. This is where replay gets you in trouble. The slo-mo replay makes it look like it's a catchable ball, but it isn't. In real time, at live speed, this isn't an error. This isn't a missed catch or a drop. I was loving the call of a single, especially because it was the first hit, and then, when it was changed, it felt like it was to protect a no-hitter. Everything about this screams "above ordinary effort" ... I would have left this as a single.

I mean, Toronto Blue Jays fans are annoyed now, but had any runs scored after this play today, which was ruled an error, they would have been really mad when this most likely gets changed to a hit, because this really isn't an error either. Third baseman is on the run, and throwing awkwardly on the run. If he properly sets he never gets Lopez, so you shouldn't penalize the fielder for doing everything he can to try to make the play. Now, no runs ended up scoring, but I suspect this will get appealed and changed, because this looks well above ordinary effort.

🚨SCORING RULES ALERT🚨 OK, on Monday in KC, a sure double play was thrown away by Trea Turner, leading to six runs, but they were all earned because you cannot issue a throwing error in attempting to complete a double play. But you CAN have an error on that play if the throw is good but dropped. Well, that happened today between the Toronto Blue Jays and the SFGiants. With the bases loaded a one out, Myles Straw hits I to a potential 643 DP, but the ball went through the glove of Rafael Devers at first. Since this is a missed catch, an assumed out error is issue to Devers (second baseman Luis Arraez gets an assist), and in reconstructing the inning, this should be the third out. That made this run, and the run that followed on the next batter’s single both unearned. This is different that the Philadelphia Phillies play. Had Turner’s throw been accurate, and dropped by Harper, all six of those runs would have been unearned to Cristopher Sánchez. #BlueJays50 #SFGiants #RingTheBell

🚨WEIRD PLAY ALERT🚨 This is from tonight's Atlanta Braves at Miami Marlins game. This was originally scored a triple and an error, and almost immediately changed to an error on the right fielder and a throwing error on the center fielder. The original error on the rright fielder was for colliding with the center fielder as it looked like he had the ball. However, this was changed back to a triple and an error, as you have both fielders on a dead sprint back into right center. While yes, it might be a catch, the catch itself, and the play, is well above ordinary effort. The collision error isn't for this type of play, but a play where a fielder is situated where he can field the ball with ordinary effort and gets run into, with the ball getting knocked out, so this was changed after a review after the game but before stats were posted.

🚨WEIRD PLAY ALERT🚨 This is really crazy from the Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs. Ian Happ is on second, Nico Hoerner on first. Hoerner is back-picked and gets into a rundown. Happ goes and takes third and attempts to score, and a rundown ensues there. Happ runs into the third basemanColson Montgomery and scores. This is correctly ruled an obstruction error on Mongtomery as Happ ran into him and he didn't have the ball. But there are is SO MUCH MORE. You credit assists to the catcher (Edgar Quero), first baseman (Miguel Vargas), second baseman (Lenyn Sosa) and pitcher (Mike Vasil). What needs to be determined is this ... Hoerner is picked off, but both runners successfully advanced a base, and based on the OS Manual, I think both should get a stolen base. Happ's advancement of home would NOT have been a stolen base, so it cannot be a caught stealing, and the defense abandoned the attempt to get Hoerner out. Had Happ tried to take home because it was undefended, then this would be a caught stealing, but he's not doing that. He also didn't overslide to third and wasn't able to get back so he attempted to escape by going forward. Happ however, once he went to third (and that's where the initial throw from the first baseman should have went ... he was dead to rights) he never hesitated in trying to score. Honestly, this is going to keep the Elias Sports Bureau folks awake tonight, but I think this is a stolen base for each guy. This is a tricky one.

This was originally ruled that Perez reached on an error and he was credited with an RBI, but that was changed to Perez reaching on a fielder’s choice and the error allowed Witt to score, so no RBI. The appeal is going to be that there is no error, because watching Arrighetti, he is clearly rushing to get the out at home and is attempting a glove flip of the ball. That is IMO his only chance to get the out at home, and I doubt he gets it (Dan Shulman says a much). A glove flip on the run to attempt a bang-bang play at home is way above ordinary effort, so there should not be an error here. Salvy should absolutely appeal this to get that RBI. #FountainsUp #BlueJays50

It's obvious the folks asking me about this play in the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers game are either daily fantasy players, or gamblers, so I'll use this as an educational post. This is NEVER an error. This play where Brice Matthews is on the dead run, leaping to save a home run, and nearly making a SportsCenter Top-10 (this would have been No. 1) play is NOT an error. This is way, way, way beyond ordinary effort. An error is a dropping of the ball or a misplay in which the average fielder is expected to make the physical catch at that position, using ordinary effort. There is nothing ordinary about this. This is ALWAYS a hit. ALWAYS.

In other news: ChiCongo Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman was forced to leave Sunday’s game after a freak accident during the ballgame. Bregman was standing on-deck when first baseman Michael Busch hit a foul ball. That ball struck Bregman in the face, and he was immediately removed from the game.

Man oh man did I get a oot of messages about this one ... I see how folks think this is a hit, and it is hit hard (97.4 EV) ... but I can totally see how the scorer ruled this an error. I also know similar plays have been changed, so I'm sure Bleday will appeal.

🚨ODD SCORING ALERT🚨 I was also asked a few times about the Jake McCarthy inside the park home run against Paul Skenes in yesterday's Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates game (but not nearly as much as the Harper play). The question is why was this not a triole and an error on the right fielder for kicking the ball. This was ruled a home run because slipping on the warning track and kicking the ball away, while unfortunate, is not considered an error. So, even though McCarthy would have only had a triple, the slip doesn't go as an error, so it's an insid-the-park home run. Also, had it been a triple and an error, it would have still been an earned run as Hunter Goodman's fly out to the warning track would have scored the runner from third. #LetsGoBucs #Rockies

So here is the YES Network broadcast with Michael Kay, and this really isn’t a great look for Michael. You cannot talk in the sixth inning about how this should have been a hit and be surprised that an error was posted, and then get mad when this was correctly fixed between the seventh and eighth. Michael talked about how once the Tampa Bay Rays got a cleaner hit this would get changed because it should have been scored a hit all along. Good on the scorer for swallowing his pride and making sure he got this right. It’s easy to make a mistake (we all make them) but it would have been really easy to wait for a hit and THEN change it. I normally never mention the scorer but since they showed and named him on the broadcast, good on Bill for realizing that this needed changed and doing it BEFORE another hit. Also New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said postgame that he knew it was a hit and was surprised at the E3 ruling, which makes Kay’s ranting here look a little sillier. #RepBX #RaysUp

The hometown scorekeeper absolutely bailed out Matt Chapman on that play. That should have been ruled a throwing error, no question, but instead it’s scored as a hit—and now Adrian Houser is the one who pays for it. If that runner had scored, it would’ve gone down as an earned run, which is completely unfair given the play should have been an error. This is exactly the kind of hometown scoring that drives people crazy. It feels like protecting a name more than calling the game honestly.
