#SpaceX is preparing to move the massive new #Starship launch mount structure for #Starbase Pad B to the launch site for installation. In this post, I’ll give an overview of the design and use my 3D models to calculate the structure’s mass in its current configuration. This new launch mount, nearly an entire redesign, is SpaceX’s best effort at correcting many of the issues discovered with the mount at Pad A after a handful of launches. The only similarity between this mount and the original launch mount for Pad A is that 20 arms will still be used to support the #SuperHeavy booster before liftoff. However, the arms and everything else making up the structure are entirely different.

If you have ever thought about coming out to Starbase and experience something you can literally not do anywhere else in the world (being at an active rocket launch site with a fully stacked rocket just hours before a launch all up close), then you need to plan on doing so sooner than later. These opportunities may not last forever, and indeed some restrictions continue to be added over time. A single gigawatt of orbital compute requires roughly 200 Starship launches and Elon Musk is not satisfied with gigawatts (Save this). The target is 100 gigawatts of orbital compute per year which means SpaceX is staring down a launch requirement that no organization in human history has ever attempted at anything close to that scale. He acknowledges that scaling to gigawatts per year in orbit is a very hard challenge, but then points to something most people have missed entirely, SpaceX has already demonstrated the foundational capability, because building and launching thousands of Starlink satellites per year is the same industrial problem applied to a different payload. When you understand the orbital compute satellite as a larger version of Starlink V3 with an Nvidia GPU rack at the center instead of a communications payload, the manufacturing and launch scaling challenge stops looking like science fiction and starts looking like a production ramp. The infrastructure to support that ramp is already being built. SpaceX is currently capacitizing for thousands of launches per year, two launch towers and pads in South Texas are operational, the first pad at Cape Canaveral is nearly complete, a second is on the way at Launch Complex 37, and additional locations are already in discussion. As the CFO says it "You need to have those cost curves as you ramp up in volume and time, your costs go down." The vision he describes for what this eventually enables is striking in its specificity. He imagines asking Grok a question on his phone, the inference running on an orbital compute satellite, and the answer coming back down through Starlink direct-to-cell, a complete AI query processed entirely in space, from prompt to response, without touching a single terrestrial data center. That moment, he says, is closer than the industry thinks, with initial capability demonstrations possible as soon as next year. The bottleneck that stands between now and that moment is not the satellite design, the cooling physics, or the silicon, all of which SpaceX has already worked through.

Just 8 days after the final stack of Superheavy-B16. B17's common dome section has been moved to the front of MB1 for stacking operations. As expected, the pace of vehicle assembly will have to increase dramatically in order to keep up with SpaceX's goals for Starship Launch Cadence in 2025. We are rapidly approaching Flight 7, and Booster 17 is the Flight 10 Booster. Assuming SpaceX plans to carry out 20 to 25 launches in 2025, this booster will need to be fully stacked, cryo tested, integrated with its 33 raptor engines, static fire tested, and receive final launch outfitting 8 to 10 weeks from today. To date, the record holder for fastest assembly to launch time is B13 which took 41 weeks from initial stacking to launch. This means the assembly and test campaign for B17 needs to be at least 4 times faster than the previous best (assuming there are no re-flights's of boosters within the next 4 launches). If every booster from here on has one re-flight before B17's inaugural launch, then the assembly to launch process only needs to be around 2 times faster than the current best. I should note that B14 is expected to be the new record holder. If it launches on Jan 10 it will have been just under 40 weeks. Another important detail is that from what we can tell, this a Version 1 Booster. This means that we should expect a minimum of 4 more launches before Pad B is operational. It is the first time SpaceX has shown the site up close, with Elon Musk on the ground in the Gulf Coast marshes of Vermilion Parish, just south of Pecan Island. The message is that SpaceX is ready to build at scale. The company knows how to make rockets, make them fast and fly them thousands of times. As the video put it, "none of that matters if you don't have a place to do it." Louisiana is that place. This was not a quick decision. SpaceX says it spent about seven years searching for a high-rate launch site. There are only a few spots on Earth where you can fly a fully reusable Starship thousands of times a year. This plan has been in the works for a long time. Musk is committed. He went to the site himself and laid out the vision in person. He said the spaceport will bring "10,000 really exciting jobs to Louisiana." The state counts 3,000 of those as direct jobs. At Starbase in Texas, 70 percent of the workforce is local. I thought we would look at one aspect of the Booster design to help answer this question, specifically how well the new design reduces gravity losses during the launch to hot staging portion of flight. Come alone with me for a simplified aerodynamics & rocket engineering discussion and then do a direct performance comparison using video clips from the SpaceX live streams. My intent is to help appreciate some of the effort the engineers have put into the new V3 booster and Raptor engine designs to increase the capabilities of the Starship system and greatly increase the payload to orbit potential of Starship. Obviously there are many other considerations (it is rocket science), but I hope you find this helpful.

This project is fundamentally designed from day one to be the largest spaceport on Earth. At full buildout, the campus is expected to feature five launch complexes with two pads each, eventually hosting more than a dozen launch towers. Elon Musk confirmed that the facility is built to handle an unprecedented launch cadence of more than 30 Starship flights per day, meaning it could eventually support thousands of spaceflights a year. Coming to SpaceX StarbaseTX for Flight 12? Well, there are new public access restrictions you need to be aware of that have recently been put into place. Super Heavy + Starship is the largest and most powerful rocket system ever built.
