Here is a drill to help you learn what it feels like to use the ground and start to sequence effectively. Notice how the club is setup in the video between my feet. Get to your back swing and jump favoring your lead foot left and laterally like I am. With that feeling step in and hit one. Not where you are pushing off from when you swing and try and get that into a feeling that makes sense to you. This is how power is created in the golf swing. This is also where physical limitations can show up.

For years, I misunderstood one of the most important moves in Ben Hogan’s golf swing. I believed Hogan’s right shoulder tilted back and dropped underneath during the transition from the top—an idea that seemed to be supported by the famous shift of plane he illustrated in Five Lessons. But after years of careful study, I began to see something very different. Hogan keeps his left shoulder down much longer than I originally realized. His right shoulder doesn’t actually work underneath the left until around P6, when the club is approaching parallel to the ground on the downswing. That may sound like a small distinction, but it completely changed the way I viewed Hogan’s transition—and ultimately changed the way I understood the golf swing. This realization has informed much of my work over the last five years: how I think about transition, covering the ball, and allowing the club to find its downswing plane without simply dropping the right shoulder from the top. The famous 16th hole at Cypress Point. Playing 220 to the pin. Wind howling to the left and into. Last time, I tried to muscle a 3 wood and ended up drowning. This time I went with the bunt driver. It’s the rare golf hole so impactful to play that you think about it the entire round. Heck, I was thinking about it the day the round was scheduled. It’s so hard. It’s so beautiful. It’s the most thrilling golf shot in the entire world.

I see the golf swing as a three-piece movement: the backswing, the transition, and the downswing. The transition is where most golfers lose the swing. They rush from the top, jerk the club down with their arms, and throw away all the power they created on the backswing. That’s why I love the Pause Drill. By pausing at the top, you’re forced to start the downswing from the ground up, just as the great ball strikers did. It teaches the proper kinematic sequence while helping you develop a smooth, unhurried transition. I constantly remind my students that a great golf swing isn’t about moving faster—it’s about moving in the right order. Master the transition, and the downswing will take care of itself.

Small differences in this angle lead to huge changes in shot direction. This precision is not being trained in the gym with “golf exercises”. Poor control of this face angle is what leads to a whole host of swing issues. More so than physical limitations. For example, it is far more likely you come over the top in an effort to stop the ball going right because your face is wide open and you’ve seen the ball go right the last 5000 times than it is you lack hip or shoulder mobility. It would be beneficial for me as a trainer to say otherwise, but I just don’t believe it to be true. Use the gym to work on your physical capabilities. Improve your mobility, strength, and power. These are the things you are losing as you age. Leave the swing mechanics for your practice and golf lessons. If you try to “fix your swing in the gym” you will likely do a poor job of training your swing and your body.

But the reward is so satisfying when you hit the great shot.

A hallmark of Lee Trevino’s swing was right arm extension. I studied this move with Tim Brantley, and it completely changed the way I think about the release. Here I’m working on allowing my right hand to thrust the handle forward and around through impact rather than trying to “hit” at the ball. It’s a great feel to try because it encourages the club to release naturally while maintaining lag and compression. When I work on flattening my swing, I feel my hips and shoulders turning on a more similar plane. The club begins to orbit instead of lifting and chopping. Bryson DeChambeau hasn’t played since the Ryder Cup and he won’t be again until LIV Golf Riyadh in February. He says he’s been speed training through the off season though and has a target of reaching a comfortable 200mph ball speed. He’s also been playing table tennis with America’s number 1, Kanak Jha. Speaking to Tom Hobbs from Flushing It Golf, Bryson said: “I’m not playing until Riyadh. I’m going to be going in hot though. I’m sneaky working on my game really hard. “I'm going to start ramping up my speed again. I ramped up my speed in November, got it to where I was pumping over 190 quite efficiently with some slow golf balls and stuff. I got to 200 quite a bit. “I haven’t done much recently though. I was playing some ping pong actually the past couple of days with the number one USA player, Kanak Jha. He's so much fun. Ping Pong is my favourite sport, so I got to learn a little bit from the best in the U.S. He’s twenty first in the world. So nobody's really gotten that high from the U.S. which is sweet. “But I'll get back to speed training right after Christmas and going into the new season, I want to be close to 200. So that's my goal. I’ll just get to a place where I’m super comfortable swinging fast.” The last time Bryson went after speed he gained an enormous amount of mass. He’s come back down through the weights though over the last few seasons and is much healthier for it. But, if Force = Mass x Acceleration, will he look to add more mass again and what’s more important, increasing acceleration or gaining mass? “They're both very important. If you don't have any mass, you can't accelerate it. It's a symbiotic relationship. It's actually more like F equals M V squared, that’s more of the velocity side of it. “You can accelerate too, but what I would say is the most important thing is it's not necessarily the mass or the acceleration, it’s the ability to put pressure onto the club. So you're able to apply pressure and control that through your grip strengths around a circle, that's probably the more important piece. Applying controlled pressure to the golf club like grip pressure. “It's not that you just accelerate the club, because you have to learn how to control the face through that motion as well. So it's all, you know, you can say it's acceleration, but it's a lot of grip pressure stuff. The more you control the grip pressure and how you're moving that grip, I would say that’s more the answer to your question. “And I guess at a certain point there’s dimishning return with, you know, going up in the mass and even down in the mass. There is a sweet spot for swinging a golf club. If you get a speedstick, there's just not enough mass behind it to create the smash factor necessary, and vice versa if it is too heavy, you can’t swing it that fast. “I'll always say swinging and accelerating the club is probably the most important, but the real answer is applying the most pressure to the golf club. The grip pressure. You’re not gripping it tighter, but your hand force into it pulling it and then throwing it around the corner.” Continues in comments thread below. I have learnt to understand that golf is about minimizing your misses. On the tee, I aim up the right and I do everything to hit a draw. It gives me confidence knowing that I then have the entirety of the fairway to play with. If I hit a small draw, I end up on the right side of the fairway. If I hit a big draw, I end up on the left side of the fairway. If you aim up the middle, you double your room for error. Lesson is to learn the way you shape the ball and then make it work for you. #PXGTroops

(When the course is made for wind.) We had a super windy day at Kennemer in Holland. Had 180 yards straight into the breeze on 9, went with a dead hand 7 wood and struck gold. A great shot is always satisfying. But the more variables you take on, the more satisfying it is. Learning to treat wind as an opportunity to really play golf completely changes your enjoyment level.
