Optimizing ground reaction forces in the golf swing isn’t just about HOW HARD a golfer pushes against the ground, but HOW they push (timing and direction). One of the key kinetic variables we consider in a force analysis is called anterior-posterior force (or heel-toe force). Think of a golfer pushing frictionally against the ground, towards the target line with their lead leg and away from the target line with their trail leg. AP force is not only a meaningful contributor to clubhead speed, it also has a strong relationship to early extension. In order to prevent the pelvis from moving closer to the target line on the downswing, the lead leg needs to push considerably harder than the trail leg to drive the hip back (we often see over 2X AP force on the lead side vs the trail side in elite ball-strikers). As Newton outlines in his 3rd law, “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” In the case of this PGA TOUR player, the trail leg was pushing equal to the lead leg, resulting in him early extending.

Working with Tom Hoge and his team to see how he might be able to find a few more mph ball speed with the driver. Whenever evaluating opportunities to improve speed, we consider three primary variables: 1) the size of an athlete’s “engine” by screening movement, strength and power; 2) their ability to generate force by assessing kinetics; and 3) analyzing how they deliver energy to the club by looking at kinematics.

How does waterskiing explain why early extension can prevent a golfer from reaching their ball speed potential? Think of a relationship between a ski boat and a skier. If the boat turns “away” from the skier, the skier accelerates. If the boat turns towards the skier, it creates slack in the rope and the skier slows down. If a golfer is thrusting excessively towards the target line, it may promote “slack” in the line. Many of the most powerful golfers in the world are actually moving away on the downswing, helping to accelerate the club.

From my research, the biggest driver of clubhead speed is the average force applied along the hand path. When I first started working with Matt Fitzpatrick, this was a key area I wanted to improve—but explaining it in biomechanics terms would have been suboptimal. So I translated it. Draw Early. Fade Late. It’s a simple feel that captures how force should be applied throughout the swing—and it’s been a big piece of unlocking speed for many golfers.

Many amateurs wait until the top of the backswing to initiate the downswing. Elite players do not. When we look at force plate data from the best ball strikers in the world, the majority begin pushing against the ground well before the backswing is complete. These ground reaction forces help decelerate the pelvis so the player can lead with the lower body on the downswing. Force precedes motion. New video on our YouTube channel. Link below

A golfer’s ability to use the ground effectively is critical for maintaining dynamic posture and avoiding swing characteristics like early extension. In order to prevent the pelvis from moving closer to the target line on the downswing, golfers must push aggressively against the ground with their lead leg, both down (vertical force) and away (anterior-posterior force). One of our favorite strategies for helping a golfer develop a feel of creating these forces is a series of medical ball throws. By cueing athletes to focus on the timing and direction of their ground reaction forces, we can teach them to “use their legs to drive their arms” and avoid thrusting towards the ball. Total torque has one of the strongest correlations to clubhead speed of any kinetic variable in our database. Since torque is a product of force and moment arm, we can increase torque in the golf swing by either pushing against the ground with more force or pushing further away from the center of rotation. Think about pushing a heavy door open. The further you push from the hinges, the easier it is to move the door. You’ve increased the “moment arm.” Increasing force is a gym intervention. Increasing moment arm is coaching intervention.

“I saw a 5 mph increase like that.” Ben Crane describing how learning to unweight in transition helped him generate higher ground reaction forces on the downswing, resulting in an immediate jump in clubhead speed. Ben’s journey to 120 mph has also included serious physical and speed training, but this change is an example of how encouraging a more athletic swing can produce instant speed.
