After failing miserably over and over on fatal CPD shootings, you'd think Chicago media would try to get it right at least once. Nearly every local TV affiliate is reporting the gun an armed thug used last night to shoot a CPD just "went off." Note to all Chicago media: A "struggle with police" is resisting arrest. Guns don't "go off." They are fired by criminals. Disgracefully, ABC 7 Chicago interviewed family of the armed thug, allowing them to pollute the airwaves with patently false stories, including one of our favorites, the “hands up, don’t shoot” myth. Chicago Police BWC will confirm the following: CPD observed what was a possible drug transaction in an alley. CPD approached the armed thug. Armed thug fled to the backyard of a nearby home. CPD tackled armed thug and armed thug resisted arrest. Armed thug reached for his gun. Armed thug fired at CPD, wounding officer. CPD fatally shot armed thug who shot and injured a PO.

For those who doubt the extent of the reputational damage inflicted on CPD by progressive lawmakers, let this video serve as Exhibit A. After CPD arrest a man for suspicion of stealing a car, the parent screams and calls CPD "slave catchers." CPD as "slave catchers" originated with progressive activists and lawmakers. This is an utterly false and harmful characterization of CPD. Until lawmakers affirm CPD legitimacy in the public square, and demand residents obey lawful commands from Police, CPD will continue to face the sort of hostility seen here.

Dexter Reed's family held a rally outside CPD HQ today. Reed's sister, Porscha Banks, is seething over her brother's death. Here is a fact CBS omitted from their lousy coverage: Reed was out on pretrial release for a felony gun charge. CBS did, however, include an image of Reed in his HS basketball uniform. Reed's sister complained CPD personnel wore hoodies and drove an unmarked car. The CPD car which stopped Reed had its lights flashing and the officers all wore tactical vests with "POLICE" across the back. CBS never challenged Banks' crafty retelling of events. Dexter Reed knew he had been stopped by CPD but opened fire in spite of this. There are three lessons to be learned from the Reed shooting. First, obeying lawful commands from CPD nearly eliminates the possibility you will be killed. Second, if you fire at CPD, police will return fire and you will likely be shot. Third, media coverage of fatal shootings involving CPD just sucks. Dexter Reed's family should not be awarded one penny.
