In April 1942 the Air Force configured a Douglas A-20A Havoc to demonstrate two 1,000-lb-thrust liquid-propellant JATO units mounted in the engine nacelles for shorter takeoff runs and improved performance. The A-20A completed 44 successful firings with no stability or control issues.👀

I bet long term, SpaceX is going to be the default choice for overseas cargo deliveries, especially when Starship is proven to work. “Once you achieve full reusability, then it’s simply the cost of access to orbit is just the cost of propellant, because now you can reuse all aspects of the vehicle. The propellant we use for the Starship is liquid oxygen and liquid methane, which is the cheapest propellant you could possibly get. …So the cost of propellant for Starship will be less than the cost of jet aviation fuel, which means that you should be able to actually send cargo to space for less than the cost of cargo of an airplane going on a transoceanic trip.”

Very interesting 10 engine spin prime + igniter test from Booster 19 (27 second mark). This is the first time we have seen an igniter test performed with propellant loaded onto the vehicle. Usually these are done hours before testing. The audio from this is awesome Avid Space

Advancing LOX/LCH4 Dual-Propellant Cooling for HANBIT-Micro INNOSPACE has successfully completed a series of combustion tests for its upgraded 4 kN-class liquid-methane kick-stage combustor for HANBIT-Micro. 🚀 Building on the 237-second long-duration ground test in May 2024, the combustor has been advanced with a Dual-Propellant Regenerative Cooling scheme. 📈 ⚙️ Unlike conventional single-propellant regenerative cooling, this approach utilizes both fuel and oxidizer as coolants, enabling: 🔹 Reduced feed pressure requirements 🔹 Lighter propellant tanks 🔹 Lower overall kick-stage mass 🔥 By preheating and vaporizing both coolants, the system also achieves: 🔹 Improved mixing efficiency 🔹 Shorter ignition delay 🔹 Enhanced combustion stability and efficiency 💡 Overcoming High Technical Barriers Most notably, the recent test validated stable regenerative cooling under low-pressure, subcritical conditions — a technically demanding regime — and mitigated the risks associated with using liquid oxygen (LOX) as a coolant. The application of a gas–gas swirl injector further demonstrated improved mixing performance. January’s GS2 performed remarkably during our inaugural New Glenn launch, delivering our payload to orbit with less than 1% deviation from the target. Today, we completed a full duration 15-second hotfire test of the upper stage for our NG-2 mission. This time, we achieved enhanced performance from the BE-3U engine, increasing the maximum thrust from 173,000 lbf to 175,000 lbf per engine, further expanding New Glenn’s capabilities for our customers.
