There is a major concern about Data Centers that are using closed loop cooling systems that’s not being talked about There are a lot of chemicals being put into the water used in these systems. That water has to be flushed out every couple years Whistleblowers say that chemical water is being pushed into our streams and waterways and may have extremely limited cleaning requirements depending on state “I'm getting whistleblowers on the inside saying that they're taking all that waste and they're just running it down into the sewers. They're wanting to go to more closed cooling systems, and in those closed cooling systems, you still are gonna be using chemicals. When people say data centers use millions of gallons of water, they're describing an old technology. Before, water went into evaporative cooling towers. Warm water pulled heat off the AI chips, then evaporated into the air to shed it. It was effective, but it burned through fresh water continuously, which is where the headline numbers come from today around "data centers use a massive amount of water." The data centers we revealed at Build today don't work that way. The cooling loop is closed. Water is added once during construction and recirculates indefinitely between the servers and the chillers. No evaporation, no fresh-water resupply! Satya put the scale in plain terms: a full year of water use is roughly what a single restaurant uses. Keep in mind that for us, every liter and every watt is an optimization target. The economics and the environment push in the same direction!

Most AI discussions ignore the physical reality: a lot of facilities still can’t support liquid cooling. At NVIDIA GTC, Lenovo’s Jon Alexander explained that across 4,400 global locations, many sites still aren’t ready for liquid cooling. Some environments support megawatts of power, others are limited to air cooling in last-mile telco facilities. That reality is shaping how AI infrastructure actually gets deployed. At the same time, AI is moving so fast that supply chain and time-to-market are becoming competitive advantages. Fantastic feature from Taylor McGregor on Palm Cooling during the Cubs game yesterday. Wouldn't be surprised if it was the South Bend Cubs that started using it. It feels like 107 in the SB/Mishawaka area today. The Narwhals from Apex Cool Labs are still my favorite palm cooling devices. They stay cool the longest, and dump heat the fastest with the copper heat pipes. Happy to see more teams using it. It makes a big difference in performance in game and recovery afterwards. (Thanks Craig Carr for giving me the heads up of the broadcast!)

It feels like 107 in the SB/Mishawaka area today. The Narwhals from Apex Cool Labs are still my favorite palm cooling devices. They stay cool the longest, and dump heat the fastest with the copper heat pipes. Happy to see more teams using it. It makes a big difference in performance in game and recovery afterwards. Doug Sevey runs data centers in Iowa, and he says the water crisis around facilities like Google’s isn’t inherent to the technology. Closed-loop cooling, dry coolers, and immersion systems exist and use little to no consumptive water — his own facilities run on them. Evaporative cooling, the method behind the multi-million-gallon estimates for the proposed project near Palo, is popular because it’s the cheapest option on the table, not the only one. A dry well doesn’t check who you voted for last November. We’re all downstream of the same council vote, whether we noticed the meeting happened or not. If approved as proposed, it would run on the cheaper system instead of one that would use far less water. Would your city council approve the deal if they knew there were practical alternatives that used a fraction of the water?
