metagaming: good or bad?

It’s a balancing act. Trying to help a friend who forgets something in a tense moment? I’d be okay with that. Characters rattling off knowledge they’d have no way of knowing because they read a module before? Yeah that’s a bit much

I didn't especially care for this exchange because rather than Brennan exploring the original pretty reasonable point - that out of character supporting each other as players is beneficial - he immediately leapt to the most egregious example of metagaming and shut things down

It can be good and bad. The good kind is reminding your friend that they have a spell that could be handy for a specific situation you're currently in. The bad kind is spoiling the fun of something that is incoming due to outside knowledge (like having played a module before).

➡️ Watch this episode of Adventuring Academy on Dropout:

There is 100% a level of metagaming that is absolutely fine. Reminding another player of their own abilities is one of them.

Meta gaming is chill, when it comes to like “your a wizard, don’t you got a spell for that like, I don’t know *names specific spell*” verses like “hey so I can see we’re going this direction and here’s every monster that could possibly be in this area.”

Day 1 of asking for another season of cloudward, ho! !!!

as it is with all things, it depends on what you are being meta about. reminding a friend of a spell? perfectly fine. monster weakness? for thr more common ones yeah. just reading ahead in the module? die

Should absolutely be encouraged to talk about the game outside of its bounds, especially in this scenario. Important part is players have to not use real world info on the characters. You can forget and remember stuff as long as its done in a way that supports story and gameplay
