I've had really good brainstorming sessions with deepseek-r1-think and grok3-think. There isn't one best model for the work. I treat it like a consultation with several experts. They provide their feedback in round 1. Round 2 involves consolidation. Round 3 involves insights.

somehow claude still doesn't get writing engineering/math academic paper right...The equations don't display properly and copying text returns markdown not LaTeX....I regret that I am stuck with OpenAI solely because of this.
