My thoughts and prayers are with Delta Airlines today after SpaceX successfully deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites in orbit. That’s ~26 Tbps of downlink, almost 2x Amazon’s entire current Leo fleet (~14 Tbps), and approximately a fifth of their planned first-gen constellation.

This is crazy. Starship Flight 14 just deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites, 52 tonnes total. At around $110M per launch, that is about $2.1M per tonne. A Falcon 9 at $30M carrying 15 tonnes is about $2M per tonne. So even as a fully expendable rocket, Starship is already basically in Falcon 9 cost-per-ton territory. And Falcon 9 is already the most competitive rocket in the world today.

SpaceX is moving to acquire nationwide low-band spectrum licenses in the U.S. Low-band is the useful stuff for phones: it travels farther and gets through walls, trees and difficult terrain much better. Cities. Highways. Farms. Mountains. Remote areas. Pair that with Starlink Gen 2 satellites and ordinary phones can stay connected across far more of the map.
