While much of the world moves toward a four-day workweek for better productivity and work-life balance, Maharashtra is increasing working hours. But who really benefits? The Maharashtra government has raised corporate office hours in Mumbai from 9 to 10 hours and factory shifts from 9 to 12 hours. They say employees will get more compensation for overtime. But does this actually happen? Even now, most employees don’t receive proper overtime pay for the extra hours they work. The answer is no. Maharashtra is not alone in this. States like Karnataka, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu have also extended working hours. Yet, there has been no significant rise in investment or employment in these states. This decision may favor industry owners, but it worsens the work pressure and disrupts the work-life balance of already stressed employees.
