Engineer builds AR ad blocker for real life using Snap Spectacles and Gemini AI | Aamir Khollam, Interesting Engineering A prototype AR app detects ads in your surroundings and blocks them live through Snap Spectacles using Google’s Gemini AI. You can pay for YouTube Premium to avoid watching ads during your sacred food-with-YouTube ritual, or pay for Spotify to not pester you with ads while you try to get a morning workout in, but what can you do about real-life advertisements? A Belgian software developer may have found a workaround. Stijn Spanhove has created an experimental augmented reality app that detects and digitally covers physical ads like billboards and soda cans in the real world. Built for Snap’s fifth-generation AR glasses (Snap Spectacles), the prototype uses Google’s Gemini AI to identify branded content and instantly mask it. Instead of the original imagery, the app places a bright red square over the detected ad. These red blocks also name the hidden brand, like “Bol. billboard,” turning ad removal into a kind of real-time brand callout. “It’s exciting to imagine a future where you control the physical content you see,” Spanhove posted on X (formerly Twitter). In follow-up replies, he hinted at additional features, including options to replace the red square with personal photos or text from a notes app. Check it out below – Combines Snap and Google tools The app relies on Snap’s Depth Cache API to register objects in 3D space and maintain spatial consistency as the user moves. In demo clips shared by Spanhove, it successfully covers ads on cereal boxes, magazines, and public signage, though not without a delay of a second or two. The red overlays appear to float stably, following head movements and perspective shifts with accuracy. Still, it’s early days. Spanhove describes the software as “experimental,” and the user experience reflects that. Because Snap Spectacles use transparent displays, the overlays can’t fully block light, so the original ad sometimes faintly shows through. Also, the Spectacles’ narrow 46-degree field of view limits coverage to only what’s directly ahead. Design stirs debate The app has sparked strong reactions online. Many praised the concept of user-controlled visual space, while others criticized the bold red boxes as more jarring than the ads themselves. One suggestion, from user Hexographer ⬣Backup account⬣, proposed replacing the red blocks with more visually pleasing alternatives, such as “images of local foliage or animal life.” They also suggested that users could set a custom folder of replacement visuals, including personal or family photos. Others asked for cross-platform support, but the app currently only works with Snap Spectacles. Devices like the Apple Vision Pro or Meta Quest will need separate development efforts. Despite its limitations, the project arrives at a moment when major tech firms like Meta and Microsoft have scaled back their AR ambitions. John Krafcik, Former Waymo CEO thinks Tesla can’t solve autonomy with a vision-only approach. “Human vision is so much more capable than the vision of a car equipped with seven 5-megapixel cameras — only one of which is narrow-view, while all the others are wide-view. So you’re basically dispersing those 5 megapixels in a way that makes the actual effective vision more like 20/60 or 20/70. The rest of the cameras in a car like that wouldn’t even pass a DMV vision test. If you compare that to a serious L4 company, they’re really trying to achieve superhuman perception with an amazing array of cameras — with extraordinary 360° coverage, redundancy at the corners of the car, on the roof, high and low, everywhere. And then you have LiDAR and radar providing completely different modalities of active sensing to complement the passive sensing from the cameras. That’s truly superhuman. With that level of data, you can do amazing things — as opposed to a car that has a really bad case of myopia, should be wearing glasses, and operates on a very limited data cycle. I think that’s the core challenge the current iteration of camera-only cars faces: they don’t have superhuman vision. They just don’t. And without superhuman vision, it seems pretty unlikely to me that you’re going to achieve superhuman driving capability. If you’re not going to achieve superhuman driving capability, why are you even bothering, right? That’s the whole point of this.” 😂😂

Two videos give state of art of XR at #ces2026. This is my ninth and 10th video report from CES. Both were in suites, which means the public couldn't get into see them. The first is of VITURE, which had the best middle-weight AI glasses. The second is of Lumus, which makes the glass in the displays of the Meta Rayban Displays (the industry calls them waveguides). It showed me the first that I've seen that have 70 degree field of view. Meta's current glasses have waveguides that can only do about 20 degree field of view. The difference in size of the virtual image you see in front of you is like going from an iPhone to a 100-inch TV on your wall. The Viture, along with competitors, RayNeo, Rokid Global, XREAL 👓, among others, use a hybrid waveguide and bird bath optic. The bird bath has a much thicker optic in front of your eyes. If you actually want to play a video game, or work while say on a flight, the middle weights are the ones you want. The virtual image is like seeing a movie in a movie theater. The problems with the bird bath optics are they aren't good to wear in the real world, like while walking around a shopping mall, and need to be plugged into a phone or a laptop to save weight and have enough processing power to put a movie up in front of you. That takes us to lightweights. I saw many, and Lumus' 70-degree field of view waveguide will be in lightweights in 2028. And I assume there are competitors that we'll probably see at SPIE (optics show in San Francisco) in a few months. Many of the lightweights, like Even Realities, have small green and black displays. I have them and they are quite nice, but I want full color displays for obvious reasons. Apple bought a waveguide company years ago, so I assume it is working on some in secret, plus its partner, ZEISS Group, showed off waveguides years ago at CES, and since that's the biggest optics company in the world, it is an easy assumption to say that Zeiss is working on the displays that Apple will use. Elsewhere in the suites, Goertek_USA was showing off a new "heavyweight" with 4k displays, think of an Apple Vision Pro. Except it was only about 100 grams. Reference design, so not in real products yet. But all this points to that every year from now on we'll see a lot more displays on people's faces. At XReal they told me their Holodeck glasses are coming later this year.
