Our AI in Design case study featuring Linear is live! A couple things stood out to me right away as we were talking to Karri Saarinen and team about how they use AI in their flow - 1. They go waaay deeper with AI before doing any work that... most teams would categorize as “design” though they rightfully see it as a key part of the design process. This means asking AI for info on how a UI came to be, who has worked on it historically, why a certain change might work or not, etc. They really use AI to deeply understand the problem they’re about to tackle. 2. The way they use AI within Linear gives them a crazy advantage. Imagine asking something like: “What designer has touched this feature in the last 5 years and why does it work the way it does?” Good luck getting a good answer for this at most companies. At Linear they have all that context IN Linear… it’s a huge advantage they have and one they utilize to no end. This approach is an incredible way to save unnecessary iterations and ensure you’re building a product that’s moving the company in the right direction. A new way of working. And a scary one at that. Memory Store is one of a group of new kinds of AI-first companies that can turn you into a Fast Company. It prepares employees for meetings. It helps them remember things. It shows them what they should be working on, and helps them do it. Memory Store builds a memory for: 1. Your agents. 2. Your company. 3. Yourself, or any employee on it. This helps all three work better together. Diwank Singh Tomer and I go in depth about what it does and how deeply it improves working at a company that deploys it. But to get the ultimate benefits you gotta convince your coworkers to use it. And your managers to approve it. Which means you have to get over your fears and get everyone you work with over theirs too. Which will be the challenge for Diwank. Luckily for him his first customers are raving about how good it is and how much his platform helped their companies. Increases sales. Makes teams more productive. Decreases errors and unnecessary costs. Which tells me everyone soon will be using systems like this. This is what the new way of working looks like. Once I got over my fears it sure is an amazing way to work. Will you try working this way?

Here's something nobody wants to say out loud: prompting is a bad way to work if you actually know how to make a film. Our team (Hridaye, Pavitra, and Arnav) has been making films for over a decade and the last couple of years with AI. They spent years building an eye, building taste, building their instinct. Then they were made to sit in front of a tool throwing prompts at it a thousand times hoping one would stick. Rolling dice. Praying. Re-rolling. This was the first time it didn't feel like that for them. They gave a direction, it landed. They changed their mind, it remembered why. The team truly worked the way it would work on a set, making decisions, not gambling. This one's written and directed entirely with Agent One. In their words: "it didn’t feel like a tool, but more like a crew member."

From Eric Vishria on how the top AI founders are building products completely opposite of the SaaS era: "One of the things that is really different in the AI world versus the SaaS world, is that in the SaaS world, over and over again, you had people who really understood the customer. And the problem. And then they understood a domain. They understood what the technology was more or less capable of. But it wasn't a real question of if you could build something or not. For example, take Salesforce, Workday, and ServiceNow. CRM existed before Salesforce. HR management existed before Workday. Same thing with ServiceNow. So in every case, Salesforce followed Siebel. Workday followed Peoplesoft. ServiceNow followed Peregrine and Remedy, and others. So they were just kind of, cloud SaaS versions of the prior generation product. They just understood the customers. They understood the problem. And they were just like, here's a better version. And that evolved a little bit over time in SaaS land. But that's what it is. And so product development in that way was done by people who really understood the customer and the problems. And then just took advantage of the next wave. And this is almost diametrically opposite of product development in the AI era. When I look at the teams that are having the most success today, they have intimate knowledge of the models. They are right on the frontier of understanding which models are better at what, and why, and when. And what they're going to be good at and what they're not going to be good at. And what they're spending their time on, is figuring out how do I apply this capability of this model to this domain or to this user. So they're actually working inside out or technology out, versus customer problem in. And of course, they understand the customer problem. And a lot of times they have firsthand knowledge of it. But they're really close to the metal and capability, and they're applying it. And I think this is a really different way to develop products than in SaaS. I started my career as a product manager a long time ago, and it's almost the complete opposite of everything you learned. "Listen to the customer, understand it, then bring it back to the engineering and product teams." If you did that right now, ask a bunch of customers what they want out of AI, and you brought it back, for the most part, it may not be possible today with today's technology. Whereas the teams that are winning right now really understand the technology and are applying it out. And so I think this reversal matters. I think it's a big difference in terms of how companies are getting built. And maybe even the types of entrepreneurs that will be successful. I'm not sure. You're seeing some real change there. Look at the Bret Taylor's at Sierra. That's a super, super technical founder who really gets it. Brett and Clay really get it. You look at Michael and his co-founders at Cursor. They're super technical founders and they get it. They all really understand what these things can and can't do. And that's a pretty different dynamic relative to the way the best SaaS companies got built." Postman's API Network has 100,000+ APIs and they just released a suite of tools for building AI Agents that can automatically discover and connect to any of these APIs. Think about it for a second: You can now build an AI agent that searches the network, discovers an API, processes its documentation, connects to it, and evaluates whether everything worked at the end of the process. This is a huge deal. Every person I know uses the Postman client to work with APIs. Now, they will have access to the AI Agent Builder, a complete suite for designing, building, testing, and deploying agents. I've built a few simple agents myself, and it's tough. The ability to discover and use an API automatically is really exciting (and a huge time saver if it works as promised!) And they don’t really have a reason for it, or they say, 'We have to evaluate it,' and that evaluation takes months." "This has to change. The industry is moving so fast, so you cannot have month-long, multi-month processes to evaluate every single new tool. I think the security standpoint is valid, but you have to figure out a new way to think about security and not just block new tools." "One hack I’ve seen at some companies is that they have this friction form. So engineers who feel friction and want to use new tools or AI file a friction form, and that escalates it to higher leadership. Then it makes an SLA that has to be resolved in a week or 10 days." Cheryl Reeve on the trans sports bans from her perspective of being a leader in women’s sports “Of course it weighs on me, the attacks on trans people, the attacks that they’ve gone through… it seems like it’s got way more aggressive, it’s sort of sickening when the issues they are trying to tackle are really not issues, the number of transgender athletes they are now making laws for and creating a problem, to get elected…what I’m hopeful for is that people have gotten themselves more educated and they understand that, that’s not actually a problem… exclusion is never the answer, separate isn’t equal, and trans lives matter, so to take away something that’s so valuable that sports brings to young people in particular and what it does, as I have a youngster, encourages you to be part of a team and what it gives you in terms of teamwork, leadership, competitiveness, all the things, they have every right to that as well”

There’s a loud argument being made right now that great companies are built through longer hours and more office time. Linear is a compelling counterexample. They're remote-first. They don't treat hustle culture as a badge of honor. And they're building one of the most admired product companies in the world. In my conversation with Linear COO Cristina Cordova, she put it simply: It’s not about whether you ship more. It’s whether you ship the *right* things. That sounds obvious, but in the SF tech world right now, it's countercultural. Cristina’s point is that companies need to understand what makes them different, then execute on that advantage. For Linear, the advantage is focus. As one of the fastest-growing enterprise SaaS companies in the world, Linear is clearly not arguing for lower ambition. A 50 year old design firm, Pentagram Design, known for its craft (typefaces), used Midjourney to create illustrations for a recent brand project. It caused quite the uproar. Some hated that they used AI. Some were disappointed that they didn't go far enough in their use of AI. Is this a sign that generative AI is now —definitively— part of the professional design stack?

A little rant on the direction of AI. This is not about AI walls or anything. AI is getting smarter. This is about UX and design philosophy that all the big shops are using. They are treating users like hapless children, putting words in our mouths, and aligning AI's to "think just like humans" which is a net loss for humanity. Keep AI weird. Keep AI alien. That's a feature, not a bug. The more AI's think like us, the more useless they become, and the more infuriating.
