The ship was being piloted by a local pilot who specializes in moving in and out of the Port of Baltimore. Two people have been rescued from the river. My typical morning as a pilot starts early. I wake up at 03:50 when our pilot coordinator informs me that a car will pick me up at 04:20. Due to a shortage of pilots in Vlissingen, I am given a ride to Vlissingen with a colleague. We arrive at 05:15. My colleague's ship is scheduled to arrive at Vlissingen Roads at 05:30, while mine is set to arrive at 06:00. Normally, if you are already in Vlissingen waiting, you would receive a 20-minute notice to proceed to the pilot boat. The pilot coordinator in Vlissingen tells me that I have to proceed to the "Wulpen" pilot boat. There are usually two Belgian pilot boats and one Dutch pilot boat available. I take a short walk from our pilot station to the "loodsensteiger," or pilot jetty, which is just down the stairs and across the street. When I board the pilot boat, I report to the skipper by providing my name, the ship I am assigned to, and its origin (North or West). I also inform him of the "sein," or signal, which in this case is "2A," indicating a category 2 vessel (under 150 meters in length overall) bound for Antwerp. The "Wulpen" takes me out to the vessel, where I climb on board. My colleague, who is the sea pilot, hands over the details of the ship along with relevant information regarding traffic. Off we go! I docked in Zandvliet Lock at 09:15 and returned home by 10:00. I am available again at 21:00, which today translates to an immediate phone call for another vessel.

The passengers only survived because the wounded captain unlocked it himself. We built those doors so nobody from the cabin could force their way in, even to stop a pilot. And so, Lubitz locked the captain out in 2015 and flew 150 people into the Alps. EgyptAir 990 went down in 1999 after a pilot put it into the ocean and killed 217. On Mozambique’s LAM 470 in 2013, the captain locked his co-pilot out and killed 33. Europe pushed a two person cockpit rule after Germanwings, then walked it back in 2016 and left it to the airlines. 25 years sealing passengers out, and the plane still only survives if the good pilot can open the door.

This video has been doing the rounds today. Many saying the landing was scary and the pilot would be getting a coffee-less chat with their Chief Pilot. None of these people know what they’re talking about!! High winged aircraft use a different crosswind landing technique when compared to other airliners. They fly using a ‘wing down’ technique and not one where the aircraft flies nose into wind. This technique means that often the upwind wing is lower than downwind, and the upwind main gear often touches down first. In my view, and I’ve done a few of these, this is a text book wing down landing. Good job. #aviation #pilotlife #pilot #FactsNotClickbait

Well, that would do it. The pilot didn’t flare the aircraft before touchdown meaning the plane slammed into the ground while dropping at a rate so fast the main gear collapsed. The right wing breaks off and the plane rolls, skidding to a stop. Lot of questions here…
