Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson has expressed shock after discovering that a derelict police station in Carletonville, on the West Rand has been overrun and converted into an illegal mining-controlled dwelling. Macpherson visited the vandalized building which is now also being used as a refuge for drug users. The former police station, comprising holding cells, a mortuary and staff housing has been seized by syndicates and stripped to its shell. Only bricks remain to show that this was once structure. Some of the occupants claim that government officials are acting as landlords, allegedly renting out parts of the old police station for R500.
