5 Facts you didn't want to know about Alien Breed for the Commodore Amiga Alien Breed (1991) is a landmark Amiga title that defined Team17’s early style: tense, atmospheric, and brutally addictive. It was perfect for co-op gaming with mates. Programmed by Andreas Tadic and Peter Tuleby, with graphics by Rico Holmes and iconic music by Allister Brimble. 1. Top-down run-and-gun sci-fi shooter heavily inspired by Aliens: You (and a friend in co-op) explore an infested space station, blasting xenomorph-like aliens (I originally thought they were aliens) while managing limited ammo and health. It mixes fast arcade action with tense resource management. 2. Team17’s breakthrough hit: This was only their second game, after Full Contact, and their first full-price release. It put the UK developer and publisher on the map, before they became famous for the Worms series. 3. Extremely well-received on Amiga: Launched to critical acclaim, with many magazines scoring it 85–91% (CVG 91%, Zero 91%, CU Amiga 90%, Amiga Action 87%). It was usually praised for its smooth multi-directional scrolling, atmosphere, co-op play, and technical excellence on the Amiga. 4. Infamously difficult: The original game was notoriously tough and short, with only six levels. Because of this, Team17 later released Alien Breed Special Edition 92, with rebalanced difficulty, extra levels, and various fixes. In my opinion, it’s a much more enjoyable game. 5. No official Commodore 64 version: it was developed primarily for the Amiga, and the Commodore 64 never got a conversion :( Would you have played it? I would have big time! Still one of the best top-down shooters ever made on the Amiga. Who else remembers the panic when the ammo ran low and the aliens kept coming?

Input: Jane Jacobs quotes and YouTube interview; handwritten outline; education standards doc. Output: high-quality, standards-aligned urban planning lesson plan. Plus audio overview to promote the class. 10 minutes to create, all thanks to NotebookLM and Gemini. This video is a new demo of NotebookLM that I shared earlier this month at the AI + Education Symposium with MeshEd, XQ, and Betaworks. This is an educational use-case, but the general structure of what I’m doing in the demo—take a curated collection of sources and quickly transform them into a detailed document that obeys strict guidelines—is generally applicable to many fields. Note how I am not just using the sources as ground truth for the project, or as the content for the lesson plan. The Jacobs quotes and interview are the content, but my handwritten notes provide the structure, and the framework source provides the values or guidelines for the finished project. With some simple prompting, NotebookLM and Gemini can draw on information from the sources using those different modes simultaneously: content, format, values. (I even forgot to explicitly tell the model to use the structure outlined in my notes, but it figured that out anyway.) This is remarkably sophisticated knowledge work. Building a draft lesson plan like this would normally take hours if not days. But crucially I’m in control of the document that is being generated here — it’s based on the information that I have curated, and on the instructions I’ve given NotebookLM for adapting that information into the lesson plan I want to create. Co-intelligence, as @ethanmollick would call it. For more info on the great organizations that helped me put this demo together--orgs that are shaping the future of learning and increasing access to innovative approaches to curriculum design--visit and I’ve pasted the full text of the lesson plan below. As you can see in the video, the original version also included citations to the source material so with one click I could verify that NotebookLM was faithful to the original documents I uploaded. High-Level Lesson Plan: Urban Planning and Jane Jacobs This lesson plan outlines a project-based learning course on urban planning, designed for high school seniors. It centers on the influential ideas of Jane Jacobs and aligns with the HQPBL standards. Session 1: Introduction to Cities and Jane Jacobs • Begin by exploring the question: "What kind of problem is a city?" • Introduce Jane Jacobs' key ideas about urbanism, focusing on: • The importance of diversity in uses, buildings, and populations for vibrant city life. • The role of sidewalks and "eyes on the street" in ensuring safety and fostering a sense of community. • The value of old buildings in supporting diverse economic activity and fostering innovation. • The dangers of "single-use" zoning and the importance of mixed-use neighborhoods. • The limitations of top-down planning and the need for bottom-up, community-driven approaches. Use examples from Jacobs' book, "The Death and Life of Great American Cities," and excerpts from her interviews to illustrate these concepts. Encourage students to think critically about the challenges and opportunities presented by cities. Alignment with HQPBL: This session establishes the intellectual challenge, as required by the HQPBL framework, by prompting students to consider the complexities of cities. Introducing Jane Jacobs' ideas provides students with a theoretical framework for their projects. Session 2: Neighborhood Exploration Project Introduction: Students choose a local neighborhood to study. This allows for authenticity by connecting their learning to their own community and their lives. Research and Analysis: Students conduct a "close reading" of their chosen neighborhood, focusing on: • Observing the built environment, including streetscapes, building types, and public spaces. • Identifying areas where Jacobs' principles are evident or lacking. • Analyzing the neighborhood's strengths and weaknesses. • Documenting their findings through photography, sketches, maps, and written observations. Guiding Questions: Throughout the project, use guiding questions to promote intellectual challenge and help students connect their observations to Jacobs' ideas. Alignment with HQPBL: By choosing a local neighborhood, students undertake a project rooted in authenticity, directly connecting their learning to their own community. The "close reading" of their chosen neighborhood encourages intellectual challenge by requiring them to analyze the built environment and identify areas where Jacobs' principles are applicable. The use of photography, sketches, maps, and written observations allows for diverse forms of documentation, catering to various learning styles. Session 3: Proposing Interventions Brainstorming Solutions: Based on their analysis, students brainstorm potential interventions or improvements to their chosen neighborhood, applying Jacobs' principles. Project Proposal Development: Students develop their interventions into more concrete project proposals, incorporating elements of project management. Proposals should include goals, strategies, potential challenges, and realistic timelines. Encourage students to consider the perspectives of different stakeholders in the neighborhood. Peer Review and Feedback: Students present their project proposals to classmates for critique. This fosters collaboration and allows students to learn from each other's perspectives and refine their ideas. Alignment with HQPBL: This session emphasizes project management, as students transform their analyses into concrete proposals. They define goals, outline strategies, anticipate challenges, and establish realistic timelines, reflecting a systematic approach to project development. Collaboration is fostered through peer review and feedback, enabling students to learn from different perspectives and improve their proposals. Session 4: Final Presentations and Reflections Public Product: Students finalize their projects and present their proposed solutions to a wider audience, such as: • A panel of local urban planners, architects, or community members. • A public forum or community meeting. • An online platform or exhibition space. Reflection: Students engage in reflection throughout the project, documenting their learning, challenges, and insights. This could take the form of journals, blog posts, presentations, or group discussions. Encourage students to reflect on how their understanding of cities has evolved and the role they can play in shaping their future. Alignment with HQPBL: Presenting to a wider audience, such as local planners or community members, results in a public product, showcasing student learning and engaging the community. The emphasis on reflection throughout the project, as mandated by the HQPBL framework, encourages metacognition and deeper learning. Students document their learning process, challenges, and insights, fostering a sense of accomplishment and personal growth. Throughout the course, emphasize the relevance of urban planning to students' lives and future careers. Connect Jacobs' ideas to contemporary urban issues and encourage students to think critically about how to create more livable, equitable, and sustainable cities. This project-based learning approach, grounded in the work of Jane Jacobs and aligned with HQPBL standards, can empower students to become engaged and informed citizens, capable of contributing to the betterment of their communities.

The Faculty (1998) 🪱 After the massive success of Scream (1996), Dimension Films attempted to replicate that same "lightning in a bottle" formula with The Faculty, aiming to do for the sci-fi genre what Scream had done for slashers. Often described as "The Breakfast Club meets The Thing," The Faculty is a modern reimagining of the classic "body snatcher" subgenre, heavily influenced by Jack Finney's 1955 novel, The Body Snatchers, and its subsequent film adaptations. The original script, titled The Feelers, was written in 1990 by David Wechter and Bruce Kimmel. Years later, riding the wave of the success of Scream (1996), Miramax purchased the script, and to ensure it felt "hip," the studio hired Scream writer Kevin Williamson to rewrite the dialogue and characters, adding the meta-humor and self-aware tone that had become his trademark. Williamson was initially intended to direct the film, but he ultimately chose to make his directorial debut with Teaching Mrs. Tingle. Robert Rodriguez then stepped in, bringing his signature fast-paced, indie-inspired filming style to the project. To secure the film's $15 million budget, Rodriguez struck a deal with Tommy Hilfiger. The cast prominently wore Hilfiger clothing throughout the movie, and they starred in a high-profile TV commercial for the brand, released to coincide with the film's debut. While The Faculty initially had a modest theatrical run, it has since become a beloved cult classic, with many fans discovering it through VHS rentals and cable television airings.

🎓Learn how to create a powerful Dynamic Embers smart material in a matter of seconds, in my latest video series (AAA) Pro Tips! This smart material can be used on virtually any 3D asset. ___________________________________________________ In this video, the steps are as follows: 1. Create a fill layer to then apply the base maps for our asset into it. 2. Bake out the world space, AO, Curvature, and Position maps. These maps will be crucial for the smart material to function. Also, be sure to add an emissive channel to the project. 3. Next, create another fill layer labeled (Fire animation gradient) with a black mask and inside the mask apply a paint layer. Select the paint layer and paint a simple pill shape using a soft brush. Add an anchorpoint to the mask and disable all channels in this fill layer. 4. Create a folder labeled (embers smart material) and set it to pass through. Add a paint layer inside this folder and set it to pass through as well followed by an anchorpoint. 5. Create another fill layer and apply the paint layers anchorpoint information into its color channel. From here an HSL filter should be added to desaturate and darken the colors. 6. Next, create an additional fill layer with an orange-colored emissive channel. Add a black mask to this fill layer and inside its mask apply a dirt generator. This will give us the illusion of the embers glowing from inside the charred tree. Duplicate this fill layer and tweak its emissive color to a yellowish hue and reduce its mask amount. Do this a second time but with a white-colored emissive channel. This will now create an effect of the embers appearing brighter the deeper they are inside the tree. 7. Lastly, add these layers into a folder with a black mask and apply the (Fire Animation Gradient) anchorpoint into its mask via a fill layer. Now we have a charred embers effect wherever we paint using the paint layer created inside the gradient mask! This gradient mask can also be exported into Unreal engine to create some stunning real-time dynamic animations or the new material can simply be used for in-engine vertex painting. ____________________________________________________ More AAA Game Dev Tips can be found on my YouTube channel here: Stay tuned for more weekly Tips! LARGE NUMBERS OF Americans harshly criticized China’s re-usable booster rocket on social media, saying that the US had already achieved similar feats. They are missing the point. The world took such an interest in China’s achievement not because they claimed to be first--they did not--but because a nation from a poor part of the world successfully did what the world’s wealthiest country had done. Remember, China had the same GDP as India as recently as 1986. It’s not specific achievements, but the speed and velocity of China’s rise that is terrifying the US political-media establishment. And that’s why the US is heavily arming Japan, Taiwan, Australia and a dozen other places to stand by to attack China. . COMPARE PROGRESS The missing context of the reports is this: The US, European nations, and New Zealand are ALL actively working on creating reusable rockets of one kind or another. For an Asian nation to zoom to second place is notable. What the Chinese did this week was to fire a rocket into space and successfully land an orbital booster at sea, for reuse. In achieving this, it can be said that China’s Long March 10B rocket is following in the footsteps of the US. Other rockets which have done this are Falcon 9 in 2015 (by SpaceX, helmed by Elon Musk) and New Glenn in 2025 (by Blue Origin, a Jeff Bezos project). . AHEAD OF EUROPE Yet the Chinese did not demonstrate a copy of those systems, but a unique set-up of their own, with the rocket guided down into a floating landing pad while firing retro-boosters. By achieving this feat, the Chinese have overtaken other rich countries, confirming the velocity of China’s rise. Europe’s Ariane Group has been working with the European Space Agency on a reusable rocket stage called Themis. A New Zealand-US project called Rocket Lab has fired boosters, and then parachuted them into the ocean, so parts can be reused on later launches. China has apparently overtaken both projects. . NEXT: SCI-FI ROCKETS It is worth noting that the Chinese are testing multiple systems—so they are also deploying systems where a rocket flies straight up and then returns to earth, intact, to land upright, in the style which has been seen for a half a century in sci-fi movies. Active Chinese companies in this area include LandSpace, Space Epoch, Deep Blue Aerospace and Galactic Energy. So China can say to its American critics: “Yes, you were first. But we’re happy to be making remarkable progress in this area.” Yet the elite in the US will think differently. Their attitude is more likely to be something like this: “Hey, we may be number one now, but at the rate they are going, we’re gonna be eating their dust. How can we Tonya them?” .

Inspired by Grok as a developer and a heavy gamer for over 15 years, I spent some time last week building a few things. Thrilled to unveil my latest creation: an infinite runner game built almost entirely by Grok from xAI! This project showcases the incredible power of AI in game development. Grok handled everything—from designing the game mechanics to writing the code and even helping me debug issues along the way. I brought it to life using some amazing free assets from a treasure trove for indie developers. You can play the game now at Elon Musk, I’d be honored if you checked it out. AI is revolutionizing game development, and Grok is at the forefront with its outstanding capabilities. It’s more than a tool—it’s like a tireless co-developer. Grok grasps complex concepts, provides suggestions, and turns rough ideas into working code fast. For this infinite runner, it crafted smooth player controls, randomized obstacle generation, and an engaging scoring system, letting me focus on the overall vision. And cross_protocol, founded by Henry @ONE is set to harness AI’s full potential in gaming, pushing the boundaries even further. This is just the beginning. With Grok’s help, I’m planning future projects: 1) Physics-based puzzle game where players tweak gravity and momentum to solve puzzles 2) 2D RPG with deep storytelling and branching dialogue 3) Fast-paced 3D shooter with immersive worlds Each genre requires unique skills, but Grok’s versatility makes it ideal for all of them. It adapts to any challenge—be it physics simulations, character AI, or level design—producing results that could rival a full dev team. AI like Grok is opening up creative doors I couldn’t tackle alone, and I can’t wait to see what’s next. Stay tuned for more.

🚩A 2024 RNZ piece reporting that the Govt quietly ushered in the Digital Trust Framework bill (Digital ID) that was passed in 2023. However the Department of Internal Affairs, and the minister in charge of the project (as well Spy agencies) - Judith Collins refused to answer questions about it. So in comes Colin Wallis (this name will come up again in the future, believe me) he founded ‘Kantara Initiative’ a NGO that helped develop age assurance and digital ID’s for Estonia, the worlds most digitised society and which Luxon aspires for NZ to mimic. The NGO Wallis founded is registered in Tallinn Estonia (Code 804123372). See the quoted tweet from Redbaiter below for ‘Luxon on Estonia’. in 2015, the Kantara Initiative’s Identity Assurance Working Group (IAF) worked with Estonia’s e-Residency program. Estonia’s national identity card system, Wallis and the group aimed to explore how this program could be used to ‘globalise’ their digital trust framework. In a recent webinar Colin stated that ‘Diversity, Equity and Inclusion must be the foundation of digital ID” he is seriously woke as all these progressive Tech types are, an obvious Marxist. Wallis is a dual UK NZ citizen (aren’t they all) and during the lockdown was asked by the Ardern Govt to assist them with a digital strategy. He then founded Digital Identity NZ an advisory board who worked with corporates & the Govt to help push digital ID . Colin who has been described in IT circles as “The God Father of Digital ID” was in 2018 named in the top 100 most influential Digital Identity professionals by peers this month stepped down from the organisation (lobbying done) and will be “joining a board” - gee wonder where he’ll pop up! Anyway listen to the piece from RNZ - Wallis says “this is not big brother digital ID, this is for your safety.. this will have the potential to be huge” “the biggest issue is getting people onboard” Wallis noted in a 2024 webinar - oh cue B416 & Luxon’s new found passion for children’s safety. Another expert Vic Uni Academic Markus Luczak-Roesch ( IT & Climate change specialist, argh) says he’s “looking forward to it” and there’s “no evidence it’s going to be used for government surveillance” - if you believe that I’ve got a brand new vaccine that’s 99% effective and a Auckland harbour cycle bridge to sell you. Oh check out Colin’s front page on Digital Identity NZ (screenshot below) ‘ Digital Identity NZ supports a sustainable, inclusive and trustworthy digital future for all New Zealanders’ “Aotearoa New Zealand is a country where people can “express their identity”using validated and trusted digital means IN ORDER TO FULLY PARTICIPATE in a digital ECONOMY AND SOCIETY” ———— Got the idea?? You should be very concerned.

PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SEPTEMBER 10, 2025 Prince Reza Pahlavi’s Delegation to Israel Lays Groundwork for Cyrus Accords Iran Prosperity Project Experts Identify Solutions for Iran’s Water, Electricity, and Economic Crises; Israel Pledges Support Jerusalem, Israel – A delegation of Iranian economic and scientific experts, on behalf of Iran’s Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, has completed a landmark visit to Israel as part of the Iran Prosperity Project, the blueprint aimed at unlocking Iran’s full potential after the fall of the Islamic Republic. The mission focused on addressing Iran’s water crisis, electricity shortages, and economic collapse under the regime, while laying the groundwork for the Cyrus Accords, a future peace and cooperation agreement between Israel and a free, democratic Iran. Member of Israel’s Security Cabinet and Minister of Science, Innovation, and Technology Gila Gamliel hosted the delegation at the Beyond Horizon conference, where they met with the country’s President Isaac Herzog and explored the Horizon Scanning Technology Lab. Accompanied by Minister Gamliel, the group then visited the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Shafdan Wastewater Treatment Plant, and the Nova Festival Victims Memorial. At the Weizmann Institute, one of the world’s leading research institutions, the Prince’s team met with Israeli experts in tech innovation, physics, agriculture, energy, environment, and water systems. The delegation also toured the Shafdan facility—the largest water recycling facility in the Middle East—holding expert-level discussions with Israel’s Water Authority officials to explore solutions for Iran’s severe challenges caused by the Islamic Republic’s corruption and mismanagement. “The Iranian people are thirsty,” said Dr. Saeed Ghasseminejad, head of the delegation. “They are thirsty for water, for electricity, and for freedom.” At the site of the Nova music festival, where Hamas terrorists massacred nearly 400 young people and kidnapped 44 (of the 251) civilians, the delegation heard firsthand accounts from a grieving mother of a young woman murdered by Hamas that day and from a survivor, who recounted his traumatic experience. The group joined Minister Gila Gamliel in planting a Tree of Life to honor the Israeli and Iranian victims of the Islamic Republic and its terrorist proxies. At the tree-planting ceremony, Dr. Saeed Ghasseminejad remarked, “Planting this tree in memory of Amir-Abbas Hoveyda, Nader Jahanbani, Mahsa, Nika, Pouya, Kian, Yaron, Sara, Or, Maya, and tens of thousands of other immortals symbolizes not only our shared pain at the hands of the regime, but also the deep roots and a hopeful future between our people.” Minister Gamliel thanked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his leadership and entrusting her to advance their vision of peace and prosperity between Israel and a free Iran. To the Iranian people, she declared: “You are not alone. The end of the Islamic Republic is closer than ever. Together with Prince Reza Pahlavi’s team, we are laying the foundation for the Cyrus Accords, reconnecting our ancient friendship and planting the seeds of peace and prosperity for generations to come.” “Thank you, President Herzog and Minister Gamliel, for welcoming my delegation at a time when the Iranian people are suffering from a severe water crisis, electric shortages, and a collapsing economy,” stated Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi. “I am certain that Iranian experts, working together with Israeli experts, will not only develop solutions to address the hardships brought about by the regime, but lay the groundwork for the future Cyrus Accords between Israel and a free, democratic, and prosperous Iran.” During the visit, the delegation representing Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, worked with Israeli experts to define key areas for the forthcoming Cyrus Accords, including water and agricultural technology, energy, health, trade, and tourism. The mission advances the groundwork laid during the Crown Prince and Princess Yasmine’s historic visit to Israel in April 2023. # # #
