We’ve noticed a clear trend across Premier League training this summer: a greater emphasis on duels and defensive actions within sessions. This appears particularly prominent earlier in the training week, further away from matchday, where clubs can expose players to more intense and demanding 1v1 situations. Here’s a three phase duel practice used by Arsenal as they prepare to face Aston Villa on Monday: Phase 1: Defending a direct 1v1 dribble.
