Rust was designed to turn implicit failures into compile errors. Where other languages allow you to forget something, Rust makes an omission into a compilation error for things like null checks, uninitialized variables, or error propagation with the ‘?’ character. If you mess something up, it’s almost certain your program will not compile. If it does, at the very least you should see a lint warning. 2. Refactoring in Rust is safe and easy, thanks to the compiler. Alice: “I change a return type or struct field, then just fix the compiler errors until the compiler stops shouting. And then once I’ve done that, I’ve updated every place I need to update.” Rust’s focus on correctness makes refactoring it more straightforward than dynamically-typed languages and Java-style typed ones are to refactor. 3. “Editions” allow Rust to make breaking changes without ‘breaking’ anyone’s code. Rust editions (2015, 2018, 2021, 2024) can be mixed freely across crates. A library on the 2021 edition works seamlessly with a binary on the 2024 edition. The ancient Library of Alexandria was one of the greatest human achievements in antiquity. It was a vast collection of knowledge from countless and varied sources and contained tens or possibly even hundreds of thousands of scrolls. For this reason, the destruction of the library has been a subject of keen interest by many lovers of knowledge. It is often regarded as a great tragedy. But who actually burned the Library of Alexandria?... Firstly, let us establish an understanding of what exactly the Library of Alexandria really was. It was part of a large center of learning in Egypt in the city of Alexandria, called the Mouseion. It was built during the Ptolemaic period of Egypt. This was a time during which a Greek dynasty ruled over the country (Hellenistic Era). The library may have been built during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus in mid-3rd Century BC. It quickly acquired many scrolls from all sorts of sources. The Ptolemaic kings of Egypt supported it directly, due to the ancient Greek love of knowledge. The Library of Alexandria grew to enormous proportions. At its height, it allegedly held anywhere between forty thousand to four hundred thousand scrolls. It was perhaps the greatest center of learning in the ancient world. Nonetheless, the library is no longer in existence but was famously burned. The question that remains is who was responsible for this. Numerous dramatic events took place during the reign of Julius Caesar. Therefore, it should be no surprise that he had a hand in the burning of Library of Alexandria. At one point during his war against Ptolemy XIII, the Greek forces surrounded him in Alexandria, both by land and by sea. To escape, Caesar set fire to the enemy fleet in the harbor of the city. This strategy worked, but the fire also spread to the city itself, causing the Library of Alexandria to burn down too. According to Plutarch, a Greek historian from 1st Century AD: "Caesar was forced to repel the danger by using fire, which spread from the dockyards and destroyed the Great Library" Thus, it appears straight-forward enough that Julius Caesar burned down the Library of Alexandria. This occurred in 48 BC. However, things are not quite that simple. Some scholars believe that there is evidence the Library of Alexandria still existed even after Caesar allegedly unintentionally set it on fire. Strabo, in the later 1st Century BC, visited Alexandria. In his writings, he describes a visit to the Mouseion. According to some scholars, this is evidence that the library, which was part of the Mouseion, still existed. Other scholars note that Strabo never actually mentions the existence of the library in his day. In fact, his words apparently imply that it was no longer even a thing. Other scholars also try to refute this by pointing to the fact that Mark Antony allegedly gifted two hundred thousand scrolls to Cleopatra. This was after Caesar had burned Library of Alexandria. The logic goes that this must mean that library still actually existed. Otherwise, where would Cleopatra house all those scrolls? In fact, some experts believe this gift was likely to replenish the library’s collection after many of scrolls had been burned in 48 BC. However, this argument ignores the fact that there was a ‘daughter library’ elsewhere in Alexandria. This was called the Serapeum. It was actually a temple, but it was also used as an overflow for the main Library of Alexandria. Therefore, when Mark Antony gifted so many scrolls to Cleopatra, they could have been placed in Serapeum. This also potentially explains away another argument used in favor of Library of Alexandria still existing after Caesar’s time. A scholar named Didymus Chalcenterus lived in late 1st Century BC in Alexandria. He was a very prolific writer, allegedly producing thousands of works. Impact After Term | 15 : TVA's Tamil Digital Library — Bringing Tamil's Civilisational Knowledge to the Digital Age Established by Kalaignar in 2001 to enable the Tamil language to thrive in the Internet era and promote Tamil learning across the world, the Tamil Virtual Academy has spearheaded several pioneering digital initiatives. Among its most significant has been the Tamil Digital Library—created to preserve centuries of Tamil literature, manuscripts, archival records and cultural resources in digital form, while making them freely accessible to students, researchers and Tamil communities worldwide. Following the formation of the DMK Government in 2021, the Tamil Digital Library underwent a significant transformation. As Minister for Finance and Human Resources Management, Dr. PTR allocated ₹96.65 lakh in the 2022–23 Budget to accelerate the digitisation of rare books, manuscripts and archival collections. After assuming charge as Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services, he oversaw the next phase of its expansion, broadening both its scale and public accessibility. Today, the Tamil Digital Library hosts over one lakh rare books, manuscripts, journals and historical records. Nearly 19.89 lakh pages have been digitised, including over eight lakh palm-leaf manuscript pages, thousands of rare photographs and hundreds of hours of archival audio-visual material—creating one of the largest digital knowledge repositories dedicated to an Indian language. The initiative also placed a strong emphasis on accessibility. With an allocation of ₹1 crore for the Inclusive Digital Library, access was expanded for persons with visual impairments. During Dr. PTR's tenure as Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services, 12.85 lakh pages were converted using OCR technology, while 1.30 lakh pages were made available in accessible formats such as DOC, EPUB, DAISY and Braille-compatible editions. The initiative was further expanded through a series of dedicated digital knowledge platforms, including Tamilar Thagaval Attruppadai, the Digital Cultural Atlas and Kalaignar Karuvoolam. During this period, the complete digitised works of 38 eminent Tamil scholars, literary figures and leaders were also made publicly accessible, alongside thematic digital collections preserving Tamil Nadu's literary, political, social and cultural history. The impact has been substantial. Website visits increased from 1.25 crore in 2021 to over 17.25 crore by 2026, with more than 13.27 crore visits recorded during Dr. PTR's tenure, reflecting the growing global use of these digital resources. The Tamil Digital Library has transformed centuries of Tamil knowledge into a living digital resource for future generations.

Four things that stood out to me: 1. “10x better for 1/10th of the price” is a proven winner. This is what Turbo Pascal did: it sold for $49.95 when competing compilers cost $500, and it was faster and more interactive than competitors’ products. Conveniently, the low price tag also killed off piracy 2. C# might have not existed without a famous court case. Microsoft originally hired Anders to architect its Java tools (Visual J++), but the Sun versus Microsoft lawsuit (1997-2001) meant Microsoft could not build on top of Java, as the company that owned Java’s IP (Sun) sued MS for alleged unauthorized changes to the Java language. Microsoft realized it had to build a new language that combined VB’s productivity with C++’s power. This led to C# and .NET. 3. TypeScript exists because Anders refused to build Script# for the Outlook .com team. Microsoft’s Outlook .com team asked Anders’ C# team to productize “ScriptSharp,” a language to cross-compile C# to JavaScript. Anders and the C# team pushed back, suggesting that a better approach was to fix JavaScript. Anders felt strongly that to be attractive to the best-of-breed developers in the JavaScript ecosystem, you want people to write JavaScript, and not another language like C#. 4. Designing a programming language is a 10-year play. As Anders puts it: “Version one is great, but has all sorts of issues. You’ve got to do version two, but it’s not until version three that it really starts to be great. Then you’ve got to convince people to adopt it.”

THE MISSING CANTON LIBRARY FOOTAGE 🗣🚨 On February 7th, 2022, Louis Jutras from Canton’s IT Division emailed Trooper Dunne (Norfolk County MSP) surveillance footage from the Canton Public Library, per MSP’s request. Because of the town’s camera system setup, the footage was shared via a download link rather than direct files. Dunne then forwarded that same link to lead investigator Trooper Michael Proctor. A follow up email, obtained by @Marbury_v_Mad through a FOIA request, shows that Proctor sought help from Norfolk County Forensic Video Technician Colleen Crawford. But why would Proctor need assistance if the footage could have been easily downloaded and preserved in its raw form, with original metadata? Data that was never provided to Karen Read’s defense team. Then there’s Brian Tully, the officer chosen to testify about this footage. A curious choice since Dunne received the original link and Proctor led the investigation, both would’ve been far more relevant witnesses. As Proctor’s supervisor, Tully would likely have known about the missing footage from the Canton Library. Did he also communicate with Crawford? The original file sent by Jutras was a full one-hour segment (12:00 a.m.–1:00 a.m.), yet the version later used in evidence has missing roughly two minutes from 12:37 a.m. to 12:39 a.m. And now, this newly uncovered correspondence shows Proctor personally thanked Crawford for her help with this very footage.

Got something totally different, but exceptionally badass today to share! Here is a bunch of direct hardware captures of the (F)ixed (F)unction and (F)ast (F)ourier (T)ransform (T)esting audio visualization demos, running on my Sega Dreamcast! This incredible piece of science, engineering, art, and music started off as a crazy idea to port a bunch of GPU-based, Shadertoy audiovisual demos to the Sega Dreamcast, to play with combined digital signal processing and rendering on legacy fixed-function hardware. As you can see from the video, the FFFFTT repo includes a wide array of different demos, each providing different kinds of visualizations, each featuring different types of signal transformations and analyses, with many of them also being interactive, all done in real-time! Not only that, but you ALSO can freaking pause the playback and analyze the signals in real-time... crazy! The final resulting FFFFTT demos are an epic full-stack conglomeration of Ray's raylib, providing the backing infrastructure and graphics framework, which sits atop our GLdc driver for rendering, using David Reid's miniaudio library for sound playback, with its FFT and vector algebra accelerated for the SH4 CPU using my SH4ZAM math library... all ontop of KallistiOS, running on the Sega Dreamcast! Congratulations to meisei4 for the fantastic accomplishments, and a heart-felt thanks from me for bringing everything together to make this happen! You just laid the framework for some epic audio-based gameplay mechanics and other crazy science experiments in the future for whole community!
