Russia claims it has conducted a test of a new nuclear-tied cruise missile, the Burevestnik, on October 21. According to Gerasimov, the missile flew 14,000 km and showed it was capable of bypassing the air defense system. Putin called Russia's nuclear forces "the most powerful in the world" and said Russia will "continue developing its strategic capabilities." The Burevestnik missile belongs to the category of nuclear-powered missiles and has a virtually unlimited range. The use of the hypersonic non-nuclear Oreshnik missile provides Russia with a useable card that NATO lacks in an escalation game. The message would have been received by all military planners in NATO and in the US. The missile was reportedly used last night to destroy a major gas storage facility in Lviv in western Ukraine. The real value of the missile is its ability to destroy well protected command & control facilities and other critical infrastructure without resorting to the use of nuclear weapons.
