we’ve witnessed literally hundreds of recent events where Waymo autonomous vehicles, freeze and block traffic in city, such as San Francisco, Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. Many of these videos have been collated and posted by The Sunset Project™️at @cyber_trailer. Do these vehicles need a more powerful computer system? Why does this not happen to vehicles running Tesla FSD? Is it possible that Waymo has been rushed to expand their coverage and simply gave up on basic quality controls?

Well, here's a complete thread of uninformative answers. I'll try to be the exception. Waymo's are programmed by direct logic ("If there's an object in front and it's close and it's getting closer, start braking"). As you might imagine, it takes an awful lot of IFs to be thought of and implemented and there's an almost infinite number of combinations of conditions to deal with. When a condition isn't covered, the vehicle stops. What else could it do? With Tesla's FSD, the processor is a neural net rather like the human brain with literally billions of interconnections. These interconnections are programmed through a learning process, involving feeding video of billions of miles of driving including every corner case there ever was. FSD is effectively being taught by humans, from video curated to be the best driving and exclude idiot drivers like me. This method is far more likely to behave like a good human driver, and ultimately learn from its own mistakes and become maybe 10x or more safe than a human.

I’ve been spending a lot of time with the Cybertruck over the last couple of weeks. I can confidently say this is the best Tesla ever made. FSD has a lot to do with it. It feels like an autonomous land yacht that can take on anything. The way this truck drives, soaks up bumps, offers tons of room for humans and cargo, and drives itself is hard to wrap my head around. I haven’t driven the truck manually for more than a mile since I’ve had it. A pickup truck that drives itself pretty much flawlessly should not exist so soon in my lifetime, but it does. Crazy.

Tonight I used FSD to leave a parking lot. It exited correctly but accidentally turned into a car wash entrance, thinking it was the exit. It literally had nowhere to go because the car wash was closed. For some people, if this happened to them, they would get mad and say, “FSD is trash—it can’t even leave a parking lot correctly.” They would disengage, turn around, leave, and talk about how much of a regression the software is. Note: This was on FSD 14.3.3. For me, my first thought was: Okay, how many times have we ourselves taken a wrong turn by accident and needed to turn around? Maybe we misread a road sign, maybe we were talking to someone and not paying attention, or maybe we were on our phone and made a mistake. Yet we give ourselves a pass. We just turn around and don’t think anything of it. So I thought, Let’s see what FSD does. Well, it took a few tries, but it nicely turned around and found the correct exit all on its own. I didn’t do anything. It didn’t phone home to Tesla or need anyone to correct it. My point is that so many people discredit how good FSD really is because they want to highlight the mistakes. I think it’s more important to recognize how well it can safely address those mistakes and find a solution on its own.

Intersections are prone to crashes. If crash prevention is your goal,do the following. If you're a biker, make yourself visible. By riding parallel to bigger vehicles,drivers cannot spot you. If you're a car driver,watch out for vision blocks near intersections. A biker or a cyclist or a pedestrian can emerge out of the block. Keep scanning the road and look for potential hazards. #IndianRoads

This may be the longest reverse I have seen Tesla FSD do for me. I was dropping a passenger off at a "local motel", all the way in the back where there is a big fence separating the motel from an industrial junkyard and no easy way to get back out. Tesla FSD v14.2.2 did an amazingly long reverse, all the way through the front gate and then turn around to get on our way to the next passenger. Every day there seems to be something new from Tesla FSD that I see while doing Uber in Houston that just amazes me.

If a vehicle is following in the adjacent lane at a safe distance and consistent speed, the ego car will often activate the turn signal and begin crossing the lane line before suddenly aborting the maneuver, pausing briefly, and then either proceeding with the lane change or abandoning it entirely. The stronger the sun is outside, the worse it gets. As for visibility, they can see from the inside, but the field of vision may not be very wide. The fan is also very loud, so loud that even in the clip, it was hard to hear properly. So when talking to San, please be patient and speak one at a time. Otherwise San probably can’t hear properly. So, even without the Cybercab, we still actually have a gigantic fleet that is capable of being autonomous. And the thing about being an autonomous car is that it can be used much more than a car that is not autonomous. A typical passenger vehicle car will be used about 10 hours a week. If you have a car that's a robot car that can drive autonomously, it can now be used potentially for 80, maybe 100 hours a week. So, you could have a car that has 10 times the usefulness of a non-autonomous car, but it still costs the same. In fact, the fleet is already built, so the software update just enables that capability. Overnight you have an increase in usefulness of 10 million cars that suddenly become like 50 million cars or maybe 80 or 100 million cars of usefulness overnight. That's a profound thing.
