Australians have watched their statues torn down. They've watched, 'The Colonies Must Fall!' scribbled over their streets. They've watched their own Members of Parliament put fake blood on their hands and run through the streets shouting, 'Pay the Rent!' which is a racist tax. They have entire institutions set up which endorse racial segregation. Australians are not protected. Laws should be picking up this stuff - but they're not. So, when they see two communities given extra protection - and marches in the streets - and they see themselves with nothing - that is one of the key drivers of the social problems. She got in their faces and made violent threats against them. This wasn’t drunken stupidity it was a deliberate act of racist intimidation targeting an interracial couple who were simply minding their own business. We’ve become far too tolerant of this kind of public racism. When people feel emboldened to scream slurs and issue death threats in broad daylight, it reveals how normalized hate has become in certain circles. No one should have to endure racial abuse and threats of violence just for walking down the street with the person they love. The victim in this situation was simply existing and that was enough to trigger hatred. Parents, communities, and bystanders must stop staying silent. Silence only emboldens more of this behavior.
