Ajax training this week featured this Combination Passing Practice: Up Back Through Variation Practice Description This technical combination practice is designed to develop passing quality, positional awareness, timing of movement and communication. The outside players will always complete two passes around the outside before transferring the ball through the central area (Adapt as it progresses). As the ball enters the middle, the two central players combine using an up back through pattern. Both central players must continually assess the movement of the ball, adjust their positioning and prepare early to receive. Play is limited to one or two touches to encourage efficient ball circulation. Following the central combination, the player who sets the ball rotates into the outside position. The player who initially passes into the central area moves inside to continue the sequence. A key task is off the ball movement - players must time their run to receive in the central channel (which defenders cannot enter) to progress to the final third. Coaching points: · Positioning to receive: ideally on the half turn. · Movement off the ball: looking for space and angles to receive. · Decision-making: timing of runs and the pass. · Technique – weight of pass; also angle. · Creativity: core moves, especially blind side runs, diagonal run/straight ball and vice versa. This is the Basketball Rondo passing drill. We have this in the activities library. (Download more games like this here➡️ This is a great game for passing under pressure. Four players are in a small space, like you see in the video, with three defenders. The defense has to get a steal in order to go on offense. The offense has to make 10 passes in a row to win the game. Coaches can change the space the players operate in, adjust the number of players in the game, and even combine their principles of play into it. For example, you could apply “zero-second decisions,” where players must pass immediately upon catching it, or it’s a turnover.

You definitely have a point. Look at Joan Garcia's on-the-ball performance vs Newcastle, particularly the 1st half. He helped immensely to play around Newcastle's aggressive pressing with his short passing, play through the press with his driven passes & play over the press with his much more calculated & accurate longballs. Put Szczęsny in that match, and I don't think we win because he wouldn't have been able to relieve pressure like Garcia can. 🎬 | 🕊️

If intercepted, the other team tries the same. Coaching points: · Positioning: to receive both on half turn (in own area) and square to receive penetrative pass. · Scanning: where are the gaps? · Receiving: controlling with good first touch. · Movement: to receive and offset opponents. · Technique: firm push pass with follow through. · Deception: feint pass. Progressions: (1) players on two touches; (2) first time penetrative pass = 2; (3) after two passes, one opponent can enter the quarter for a 1 v 3. If they win the ball they pass back to their teammates and re-join their group. Formed first practice in whole – part - whole session with the U11 as part of Block 3 of the training syllabus.
