Rivian has been working since 2022 to re-architect its self-driving system around an end-to-end trained model. The ultimate capability of the vehicle will be level four self-driving - being able to operate autonomously without anyone in the driver's seat, says CEO RJ Scaringe.

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe says the company plans to launch hands-off driving later this year, eyes-off driving in 2027, and fully autonomous vehicles that never require human intervention in 2028. "Getting to Level 4, which is the idea of the vehicle driving empty, you sitting in the backseat, picking up groceries for you, or dropping you at the airport, our timeline for that is 2028. "We have point-to-point capabilities launching later this year. That's when you're in the driver's seat, you type in the address, and the car will completely navigate to that address. Your hands are not on the wheel, you're still alert and aware of what's happening, but you're not driving the car. We call that hands off, eyes on." 🚨CHARGED🚨 A Texas man has been charged with MANSLAUGHTER after blaming Tesla's full Self-Driving system for a fatal crash that killed a grandmother. Police discovered from the car’s black box that Michael David Butler overrode Tesla's full Self-Driving system by pressing the accelerator to its maximum position prior to the crash. Butler had the vehicle allegedly driving at 73 MPH in a residential neighborhood. He apparently pressed the accelerator multiple times during his ride. Butler at the time was working as a DoorDash driver.

Not only in the number of miles it has, but it’s world-class in the way that it’s designed, the way they do training to data collection and curation, synthetic data generation, all of their simulation technologies. Of course, the latest generation is end-to-end full self-driving, meaning it’s just one large model that is end-to-end trained. Elon’s AV system is, in every way, 100% state-of-the-art. And so I’m really quite impressed by the technology. I have it and I drive it in our house and it works incredibly well.”

The idea that Tesla is alone in the race to develop end-to-end vision system for self-driving and delivering into consumer vehicles is officially dead. Like dead, dead. I tested Xpeng's VLA 2.0 in the streets of Beijing, and it is comparable to my experience of daily driving Tesla FSD v14. Xpeng is not charging $100 a month to drive this. It is inlcuded in its higher-trim vehicles and it already caught the attention of Volkswagen, which is going to integrate into its own vehicles - something Tesla hasn't been able to do despite trying.
