Stoke Space's Andromeda 2 engine is incredibly unique. It's a single engine which feeds 24 thrusters around an actively cooled heatshield allowing the second stage to reenter engines first. It's also designed to operate in both sea level and vacuum conditions.

Having 1 engine on the second stage is very common. Falcon 9 only has one engine on the second stage and it's the world's most reliable rocket.

Can you turn individual thrusters on/off and/or aim them for directional/attitude control?

They can choose which ones to fire which is useful for stuff like landing the second stage on the moon. The thrusters can also be individually throttled and they use the differential thrust from that for attitude control.

Crew Dragon was meant to have been capable of propulsive landings with something like this, but they could not work out how to stick landing legs through the heat shield. And NASA certification would have taken too long. So parachutes it was.

There is a long checklist of items to go through before you get to hit the starter, so this clip is just the fun part. The engines are labeled engine #1 (left) and engine #2 (right). The first engine is started off the 24volt battery of the aircraft and the starter is released one the compressor reaches 55%. Once the first engine is up and running with the generator turned on, it makes the second engine spool up much quicker, as is has very little load to work against with the blades already turning at 85% rotor speed by this point. On odd calendar days we start engine number 1 first, and number 2 on even days. This is done to lessen the chance of us wearing out one engine more than the other. B212’s are intensive on maintenance, so each machine is dispatched with an engineer to oversee the maintenance. They will walk around the machine and check for (no) leaks for the first start of the day. 📸 by ig/bushpiloting Not an ad

This test represents the Apogee Raise Maneuver or ARM burn for our Blue Moon Mark 1 Lunar lander, plus margin, the longest burn required by the mission to reach the Moon. You may have noticed that the engine for this test does not have a nozzle. BE‑7 is tested in both vacuum and atmospheric conditions. This test was at GEEx—our atmospheric test position in West Texas.
