With rocket engines, boring is good. To that end, please enjoy this 1,030-second (17+ min!) BE-7 engine burn. This test represents the Apogee Raise Maneuver or ARM burn for our Blue Moon Mark 1 Lunar lander, plus margin, the longest burn required by the mission to reach the Moon. You may have noticed that the engine for this test does not have a nozzle. BE‑7 is tested in both vacuum and atmospheric conditions. This test was at GEEx—our atmospheric test position in West Texas.

As the CFM LEAP engine shuts down, you can hear the distinctive “whoosh” sound followed by a gush of air. That is the Reverse Bleed System (RBS) at work. During normal operation, a significant amount of fuel remains unpurged in the system after engine shutdown. This residual fuel, located near or within the hot section, vaporizes due to high temperatures and deposits carbon (coke) on the fuel nozzles. Over time, nozzle coking leads to several operational and maintenance issues, including loss of thrust, reduced engine efficiency due to incomplete combustion, accelerated deterioration of hot-section components (combustor and High-Pressure Turbine), engine start failures, potential engine stalls, and increased unscheduled engine removals. The Reverse Bleed System (RBS) prevents fuel nozzle coking by automatically introducing cool air from the core compartment into the engine core flowpath after shutdown. This effectively lowers the fuel nozzle temperature below the coking threshold. RBS can operate for a maximum of 1 hour, and its effectiveness depends on ambient conditions (especially ambient temperature) and the total duration it runs. The last flight of the day contributes the most to fuel nozzle coke accumulation because of the extended dwell time at the gate. By actively managing post-shutdown thermal conditions, RBS significantly reduces coking-related problems, improves engine reliability, and lowers long-term maintenance costs. January’s GS2 performed remarkably during our inaugural New Glenn launch, delivering our payload to orbit with less than 1% deviation from the target. Today, we completed a full duration 15-second hotfire test of the upper stage for our NG-2 mission. This time, we achieved enhanced performance from the BE-3U engine, increasing the maximum thrust from 173,000 lbf to 175,000 lbf per engine, further expanding New Glenn’s capabilities for our customers.

A ton of historic firsts last week. Our Relativity Space team proved more in this first launch than most companies (and even countries) ever have in their maiden attempt: ✅ first methane fueled rocket in the West to reach space, well over the 100km Karman Line (only other is China) ✅ first nearly entirely 3D printed rocket to fly and prove 3D printing is viable by passing Max-Q, the max stress on the rocket ✅ first methane orbital-class rocket to successfully complete stage 1 flight, main engine cutoff, and second stage separation in the West (only other is China) ✅ first-ever second stage ignition attempt during the vacuum of flight for a methane fueled orbital rocket in the West, collected first-ever flight data ✅ continuing data reviews, and will bring learnings to our future rocket including Terran R ✅ one really ecstatic launch viewing experience - here, as close as one can get to the launch pad. INTENSE 12 of 10, the reaction makes perfect sense when being there, surreal 🤯

From avionic builds to expanding of our machine shop capabilities and more. 🔥In prop, teams completed assembly of the second Aeon R engine for first flight and reduced average cycle times across key engine components by 50%. 💻The avionics team is building the flight hub box, which will serve as Terran R’s central node for routing data and distributing power to critical systems. 🚀Welding of the first stage tank is progressing with 3 circumferential friction stir welds now complete.

Our Qualification Model (QM) Gas Generator has successfully accumulated over 15 minutes of operating time across 20 test runs, covering all launch and re-entry scenarios. These tests included: ▪️Ignition and short-duration burn (5 s) ▪️Medium engine running time (20 s) ▪️Stage 1 nominal burn duration (40 s) ▪️Longest Burn (LB) for engine duty cycle ▪️Extended burn (+10%) for qualification margins With more than 15 minutes of accumulated runtime, this Gas Generator has operated at over 400% of a single mission requirement, including simulations of 3 booster re-entry burns, preparing the hardware for reusability conditions. Hardware reliability is a must, and with all those tests, PLD Space can better determine when if hardware can fail during the process and introduce improvements that allow MIURA 5 to a successful mission 🚀
