Terran R Build Progress – The past 2 months have been packed with rapid advancements across design, manufacturing, and testing. November was a busy month across Terran R test campaigns. 🛢️ Second stage tank successfully completed acceptance testing with 30+ load cases, including pressure proofing and flight-load simulations. 💨 Transonic and supersonic wind tunnel testing wrapped with 100+ runs of the first stage entry configuration. 🔥 Aeon V dev engine test campaign completed; Aeon R flight engine acceptance testing progressing at NASA Stennis. 🌡️ Hot gas testing executed on the stage press valve to validate performance under extreme thermal transients.

A ton of historic firsts last week. Our Relativity Space team proved more in this first launch than most companies (and even countries) ever have in their maiden attempt: ✅ first methane fueled rocket in the West to reach space, well over the 100km Karman Line (only other is China) ✅ first nearly entirely 3D printed rocket to fly and prove 3D printing is viable by passing Max-Q, the max stress on the rocket ✅ first methane orbital-class rocket to successfully complete stage 1 flight, main engine cutoff, and second stage separation in the West (only other is China) ✅ first-ever second stage ignition attempt during the vacuum of flight for a methane fueled orbital rocket in the West, collected first-ever flight data ✅ continuing data reviews, and will bring learnings to our future rocket including Terran R ✅ one really ecstatic launch viewing experience - here, as close as one can get to the launch pad. INTENSE 12 of 10, the reaction makes perfect sense when being there, surreal 🤯

Staff Flight Test Engineer Simon Hedderman takes us inside the Archer telemetry trailer, the data center behind our flight test operations. While the pilot operates the aircraft, our team monitors from the telemetry trailer, gathering holistic aircraft data like engine temperatures, airspeed, and battery levels. Each part of the aircraft is represented, with members from the battery, engine, propellor, flight control systems, guidance navigation & controls, and flight test instrumentation teams gathering data and monitoring real-time performance during flight. This test data helps to validate aircraft performance across mission profiles, supporting safe flights and preparing us for public operations.

Here’s the static fire video! This all-up test was really a hop mission simulation and included everything from flight avionics, power systems, computers, GNC, RCS, tank pressurization, and, of course, the engine and heat shield. The only thing we simulated was the position data, which was derived in real time from engine data. Simulating the position gave us the opportunity to inject dispersions, such as a persistent roll, which you can see the badass RCS fighting hard to correct. Huge success across the board!

Here’s the static fire video! There is a long checklist of items to go through before you get to hit the starter, so this clip is just the fun part. The engines are labeled engine #1 (left) and engine #2 (right). The first engine is started off the 24volt battery of the aircraft and the starter is released one the compressor reaches 55%. Once the first engine is up and running with the generator turned on, it makes the second engine spool up much quicker, as is has very little load to work against with the blades already turning at 85% rotor speed by this point. On odd calendar days we start engine number 1 first, and number 2 on even days. This is done to lessen the chance of us wearing out one engine more than the other. B212’s are intensive on maintenance, so each machine is dispatched with an engineer to oversee the maintenance. They will walk around the machine and check for (no) leaks for the first start of the day. 📸 by ig/bushpiloting Not an ad
